Teens on the Edge: A Wake Up Call

Most teens feel they are invincible and engage in life threatening behaviors, so Tyra spent an hour giving these teens a much needed wake-up call. She sat down for an emotional conversation with a young woman who admitted to using every type of drug, a 19-year-old who risked his life doing "homegrown" stunts for entertainment, and a young woman who thought her out-of-control drinking was harmless.

Ask Dr. Drew: Teens At Risk

Dr. DrewKnown to millions as a radio host, TV personality and author, Dr. Drew Pinsky is a respected medical doctor, board-certified addictionologist and relationship expert whose experience with sexual issues, medical help, addicts and teens spans more than 20 years. Concerned parents posted questions on tyrashow.com, seeking advice for dealing with teens on the edge, and Dr. Drew provided his insight.

Dear Dr. Drew: I have a daughter who is really out of control. I have a feeling she’s getting herself caught in with the wrong group of friends, and recently I found cocaine in her bedroom. I am very worried, what can I do?

Dr. Drew Says: One thing I try to emphasize to parents is if they have found evidence of a child’s drug use, they are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. If you find drugs of any kind on your child, in their backpack or they are caught with substances at school or by other authorities, this is a terribly serious sign and an absolute indication that professional help is warranted. Please get help if you find any evidence that your child is using drugs. Remember that substance use changes the brain in profound and long-standing ways. These changes can be particularly profound during adolescence and change the trajectory of a child’s life.

Healing Racism

Before 1967, interracial marriage was considered a felony, punishable by five years imprisonment. The laws might have changed, but the racist attitude of some people has not. According to FBI statistics, the greatest growth in hate crimes in recent years is against Asian Americans and the gay and lesbian community.

Author Margaret Paul, Ph.D. best-selling author of "Do I Have To Give Up Me To Be Loved By You?" believes people resort to racism when they feel that they are threatened and their own self-esteem is lacking. Racism comes into the picture when the false beliefs about being better extend to race and religion. All of these false beliefs of the wounded aspect of ourselves stem from fear and a deep desire to have control over not feeling the fear.
