Jorge Cruise, nutritionist and author of the “3 Hour Diet,” says every woman needs to know the following tips for healthier living.
Snacking Is Healthy
To keep your metabolism active and to prevent your starvation protection system from turning on, you’ve got to keep eating throughout the day. That’s right: you should eat snacks! Hunger is a powerful force and you need to pay close attention to your hunger cues throughout the day. The longer you go without eating, the more your willpower will weaken and you’ll be more likely to binge on whatever you can get your hands on later. To keep these hunger cues at bay, eat your first snack three hours after breakfast and the second one three hours after lunch. This will help keep your blood sugar and insulin levels steady. Snacks also provide a chance for you to indulge a little. As long as you hold yourself to a 100-calorie serving, you can’t go wrong. Nuts and seeds make for a filling protein-packed snack. For about 100 calories you can have: about 30 pistachio nuts, 12 almonds, or 10 peanuts. Remember to buy your nuts with their shells still on; that way it will take you longer to eat them, making you less inclined to eat too many. If it’s cookies you crave, go for two 2-inch chocolate chip cookies, two Fig Newtons, two graham cracker squares, or two 2-inch ginger snaps. Be careful about portion sizes when it comes to cookies bought at bakeries because, not only are they generally huge in circumference, but they are often thicker than a normal cookie. Have one-third of a large cookie and save the rest or share it with a buddy. Other smart snack ideas that will fuel you with energy are: a stick of string cheese, a hard-boiled egg, air-popped popcorn, or raw vegetables.
