Brian: Good and Not-So-Good B-day Gifts

It's my birthday this week, so for this blog I thought I’d write about the best and worst gifts I’ve ever received from past flings. This train of thought kills two very important birds with one stone, one: writing the blog, duh, sorry to test your patience/intellect. two: it allows my editor to stop pistol whipping me and get down to editing. BUT I digress!

So, Today's topic: Good and Not-So-Good (well, plain awful) Birthday Gifts.

Typically when it comes to birthday gifts coming from any friends, especially, new-ish girlfriends, booze is the perfect option. (That is, of course, as long as both the recipient and gift-giver are over 21, natch.) However, there is an exception. One year I received a bottle of fairly expensive gin. The problem was that only a few weeks before my 22nd b-day I’d already made it clear I really don’t like gin at all, when my lady friend baited me with the “What kinds of alcohol do you really like?” question. In any case, seeing as I was in college, I drank the gin and even shared a few cocktails with old what's-her-name, but I didn't enjoy it, I assure you of that dear reader.

However, the absolute worst gift I ever received came last year from my most recent “ex,” who had the gall to give me nothing… as in zero…as in, “when you DON'T care enough to say it with a card…” as in, only a few mere weeks after, we were broken up. What was most shocking to me was her awful rationale of, “I’m broke.” Which is ridiculous. She could've made me a bad mix-CD and I'd have been satisfied, well, maybe slightly miffed, but you see the point—I know it’s cliché, but it really is the thought that counts. A thousand times, it's the thought that counts!

Speaking of thought, one of the best gifts I ever received was a photo album that my girlfriend at the time made, which was overflowing with pictures of her, me, us and our friends. Cheesy? Sure. Thoughtful? Yes. Do I still have it and look at it from time to time? Definitely.

Other good but not nearly as great gifts have included clothing, accessories and tickets to concerts. But really with the clothes and accessories, time and the inexorable wear and tear of everyday life will eventually ruin the items themselves. What lasts is the meaning and memory of who gave (or didn't give) the gift.

TYRA!
I am literally your biggest fan and can't breathe when someone even says your name. You are such a positive and REAL person and I really admire you for that. I watch you every day after Oprah, and between the two of you I am set for the day! To be honest though, I like the more serious shows on touchy and taboo subjects. As a 14 year old girl, I can't talk to many people about everything on my mind! Keep on being you!

Gabi

dear tyra i love your show
;its the bomb.I live in kenya and i was wondering if sometime in the future you would do a show featuring our country and you would do a photo shoot inspired by our countrys greatness. Iam your BIGGEST fan in my family and in Africa. Please do it for me.

Hi tyra

Honestly i myself is a dark skin girl and i'm far from what that small minded lady has discriped. i might be dark skined, but i don't have big nose or big lips. and for the record i'm damn gorgious and i have my pictures to profe it or if she likes she can come see me in person. because i know i look 10 times better than her.. hell i look 100 times better than her.

Hi, Tyra, I always watch your the show very late at nite on the "oxgen",I love all your shows & you are so beautiful, you must have good genes from your mama? & just have beautiful women in your family, so i especilly love the make-over shows! My problem is that I just don't know what to do with my "HAIR" at 54yrs. young it is totally gray, sooooo I have tried coloring it evering thing from red to light blonde, I just don't have a "clue" what is ridht for me and neither do the hair stlyest I have gone to. I had had it cut really, really short, and red, so now it is grown out long for me and gray , very very gray, and I am itching to have a fresh new do for summer! Can you "HELP" or suggest where to go in my area? fan for life! Thank you soooo much Paula Harvey
