Your Most Intimate Questions Answered: Find out what’s going on DOWN THERE

Tyra’s lady docs Dr. Debby, Dr. Donnica and Dr. Francis get you the answers you need.
1. Is it safe to douche?

Although douching is typically safe, it doesn't really make your vagina cleaner or better, and it may cause more harm than good. Our vaginas are self-cleaning. Just as our eyes use tears to clean themselves, our vaginas use discharge to clean itself, and it's perfectly fine and natural. It also doesn't prevent pregnancy, as is sometimes mistakenly believed.

2. Is it normal to bleed after a pap smear?

It is common to have spotting because the nature of the pap is you are moving cells and removal can irate the cervix and cause bleeding.

3. Is it okay to have sex the night before a pap smear?

If you are going for a regular exam then the answer is yes it is okay.

4. When do I have to start going to the gyno and how often?

Start at 21 or three years after you become sexually active. Girls who are thinking about becoming sexually active should consider going to a gynecologist too for a general check-up and to learn how to protect themselves.

5. What causes my friend’s cycle to sync up?

The medical term for this is "menstrual synchronicity". It usually affects women who live together and is believed to be caused by pheromones (airborne chemical signals that are not consciously detected as odors but are sensed by the nose). Interestingly, this happens in animals as well.

6. Why do I have food cravings during my period?

This generally happens in the 10 days before your period: there are biologic and psychological reasons. Biologically, serotonin (a neurotransmitter) levels decrease at this point in the cycle. Low-levels of serotonin may stimulate an urge to eat carb-rich foods, which in turn increase serotonin synthesis and levels (this is similar to how antidepressants work). Psychologically: decreased serotonin influences mood (badly!), causing increasing anxiety or stress…and stress eating. Also, chocolate is one of the biggest antidepressants.

7. Do artificial sweeteners cause worse cramps?

Artificial sweeteners get blamed for a lot of things but there’s no clinical proof. But if you want to cut it out of your diet and see if it helps, go for it.

I think I may have fibroids, but a friend told me that if I did, I'd be in a lot of pain, but there isn't any pain. My stomach has grown by leaps and bounds and I'm very incontinent. I think my stomach feels like there's a mass there.

Another question/comment. My daughter, 28, feels unbearable pain when she gets a pap smear. Why? I hear that this is very unusual, since there are not suppose to be any pain receptivews down there.

Thanks.

Thank you for your show yesterday, "What's up down there." I think it definitely help ease a lot of fears many of us women have. I believe more people/media/doctors/parents need to inform us about HPV. I remember 2 years ago when I received a phone call from my doctor's office. Ok...it must have been an assistant or an inexperienced nurse. She told me I had an STD. Then she paused and mentioned HPV. I had no idea what HPV was at the time, but I just broke down in tears to my mom. I asked the nurse to explain it to me, and she told me she would send me some information. ARE YOU KIDDING??? I was seriously in shock that she could not even explain this to me. And the fact that she just wanted to send me a pamphlet. You can't just call someone on the phone to tell them they have a STD and not explain anything. I asked to speak to the doctor, who did call me back right away. He set me more at ease, and even set up some time in his office so we could talk. I did receive the vaccination and my past 3 paps have come out normal. The HPV has been cleared. I wanted to thank you for bringing this information to so many of us. These shows bring light, especially to many young women viewers you have.

I am a school nurse and I was SO happy to see your show yesterday! What great information you gave out!! I have been teaching growth and development for 10 years now to elementary students, as well as a nursing assistant course in our high school. I always encourage the students to take the time to view their body - after all, like you said, "it's just another part of your body." It's so important to know what's normal for you! The differences among people are so vast and I try to stress that point over and over! So from the bottom of my heart Tyra - thanks for being such an awesome role model to so many girls and getting the word out that "what's going on down there, does not need to be scary!" I wish I could bring you into my school and have you along side of me when I teach this, you are awesome - Thanks much!!

Yesterday's show was very anticipated and I TiVo'd it to watch today. I must say, however, Tyra, I was very disappointed in your panel's reaction to the most important question of the hour. Does a vagina change after childbirth? This is a real concern of many women losing their "tightness" and you could have addressed this beautifully. Do you think men would be laughing at a question regarding their dicks getting smaller? Really. I was especially amazed at the reaction of the middle doctor and the younger one on the left with her twittering giggle and obviously unknown response. Can you note your response for us? Regardless, thank you for getting women to talk about their most precious asset -- their vagina!

The one question I wanted to have answered but was not was...how does one get rid of facial (chin/neck) hair?? Or how to reduce its frequency? I am now getting the hair bumps...just like men do. Help!! as I don't want the dark spots that the hair/bumps causes.
Thank you.

How can I view Mondays show. Not just the recaps. Is there a script viewing like there is on Oprah? I would prefer a script.

Hi Tyra! This is my first email ever to a show or to a talk show host; however, I was very dissapointed that I missed your show "What's Up Down There". I really was hoping to tape the show via TIVO to watch with my daughter at a later date. She is 11 and while some of the information may not be for her right know I feel it is important for her to be informed regarding her body and now what to expect when she starts her period. I want to be able to talk with her and make her feel comfortable about coming to me with questions. I was thinking that watching a show, like the one you had, would be a great vehicle for open communication without making her feel pressured to talk about a subject which sometimes can be embarrasing or overwhelming. I am writing to ask if you have a place that I can purchase transcripts from this show and/or a dvd of the show?? Thank you for your time in responding to my email. I looked throughout your website and only came across the show recap link which did not have the information I was looking for. Thanks again, Stacy from Cumming, Georgia

I wanted to watch this show because I was interested to see whether there was anything brought up about Vulvodynia or Interstitial Cystitis - which are very painful diseases that really nothing is known about. People with these diseases usually suffer with no cure and no information and are usually told that this disease is all in their head, when it is in fact, very real. It is like living with a bad urinary tract infection everyday of your life, but that no antibiotic can get rid of. In my case, I have severe pain almost everyday and like many others with these diseases, sex is unbearable. I am only 22 years old, but I can never see or even consider sex without extreme pain. Most people have never even heard of this disease, maybe if more people did there could someday be a cure and more understanding.

I also was not able to see this show. I am very dissapointed as I wanted to watch it with my daughter. Is there the ability to buy a cd with this show on it? If not is there transcripts that I could purchase?? It is the collection of information from doctors that is invaluable to find at one time. I want my daughter to have all the information she can to understand her body and as she grows to make positive descisions about sex as well as taking care of herself. Thanks, Stacy

Unfortely, I didn't get to see the show, I was wondering if you have your past shows somewhere that people can view them, I work over nights and I have a six month old baby. I don't do daycare so when she sleeps I sleep, and today we were sleeping during your show.

Hi Tyra,
Todays show was long overdue in our society, and I want to thank you for being brave enough to run it. I was wondering if you would want to do a follow-up on some of the problems that women have down there?
Such as: Interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia pelvic pain dysfuntion.
These problems are disabling and cause excruitating pain and there is no cure, just ways of coping with living with them. Some women with mild cases can live semi-normal lives. But for me and many others we live in constant pain and urinated at least 50 to 60 times a day. With no break while trying to sleep.
There are very few doctors that know about it them or how to treat them. Please if someone like you can get the word out we would be forever gratefull. My goal someday is to see an ad for INTERSTITISL CYSTITIS AT FENWAY PARK WHERE THE VIAGARA SIGN IS.
Thank you again for todays
Annette
