Your Most Intimate Questions Answered: Find out what’s going on DOWN THERE
![]()
Tyra’s lady docs Dr. Debby, Dr. Donnica and Dr. Francis get you the answers you need.
1. Is it safe to douche?
Although douching is typically safe, it doesn't really make your vagina cleaner or better, and it may cause more harm than good. Our vaginas are self-cleaning. Just as our eyes use tears to clean themselves, our vaginas use discharge to clean itself, and it's perfectly fine and natural. It also doesn't prevent pregnancy, as is sometimes mistakenly believed.
2. Is it normal to bleed after a pap smear?
It is common to have spotting because the nature of the pap is you are moving cells and removal can irate the cervix and cause bleeding.
3. Is it okay to have sex the night before a pap smear?
If you are going for a regular exam then the answer is yes it is okay.
4. When do I have to start going to the gyno and how often?
Start at 21 or three years after you become sexually active. Girls who are thinking about becoming sexually active should consider going to a gynecologist too for a general check-up and to learn how to protect themselves.
5. What causes my friend’s cycle to sync up?
The medical term for this is "menstrual synchronicity". It usually affects women who live together and is believed to be caused by pheromones (airborne chemical signals that are not consciously detected as odors but are sensed by the nose). Interestingly, this happens in animals as well.
6. Why do I have food cravings during my period?
This generally happens in the 10 days before your period: there are biologic and psychological reasons. Biologically, serotonin (a neurotransmitter) levels decrease at this point in the cycle. Low-levels of serotonin may stimulate an urge to eat carb-rich foods, which in turn increase serotonin synthesis and levels (this is similar to how antidepressants work). Psychologically: decreased serotonin influences mood (badly!), causing increasing anxiety or stress…and stress eating. Also, chocolate is one of the biggest antidepressants.
7. Do artificial sweeteners cause worse cramps?
Artificial sweeteners get blamed for a lot of things but there’s no clinical proof. But if you want to cut it out of your diet and see if it helps, go for it.

Hi Tyra,
i was wondering should i trim down there or should i leave it bushy? does the man really mind if his partner is hairy down there or should she shave? do most women shave because they are embarresed or because they think their partner likes it hairless? Well im only 14 and i have a boyfriend and we have been going out for couple weeks and i think i am ready and responsible and can handle the pain. I havent gotten my period yet so can i still get pregnant? well i really appreciate you taking your time and listening to me.
Thanks,
Ash

Hi Tyra/Co-Workers,
What in the ham fat, chicken sandwich, is really going on down there with me? Why in the heck do I have gray hairs down there? It was first discovered at the age of 34 and now I am 40. Doesn't that only suppose to happen when you're an elderly?
Shaving that sucker can only do so much and probably made it worse. It may be the reason why I have more when it grows back. It's not only down there people, It's on my eyebrow/eyelashes as well. AAAAARRRRGH! WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH MY HORMONES?! PLEASE! SOMEONE RESPOND SOON, BECAUSE I AM TIRED OF THIS-I CAN'T UNDERSTAND EMBARRASSMENT!
OTHER THAN DR. MEHMET OZ, CAN I GET AN ANSWER(IF POSSIBLE)FROM A FEMALE'S POINT OF VIEW?
THANK YOU

hi ya tyra!, i am 48yo female. i was watching your 'down there' show late at night at work, i am a firefighter/paramedic in reynoldsburg (a sub-burb of columbus) ohio. the show brought to mind my experience with "bad/hurtful" pap smears and "good/hardly felt a thing" ones.. thought i'd share...8 years ago i was seeing my family dr for my paps. (the dr is a female, for god's sake ya'd think she'd do better) anyway... the speculum she was using was a disposable kind (whitish, plastic) and year after year i flinched and felt sharp pains when she inserted it and positioned it. i kept quiet and ended up not getting my annual test done for probably 2 years because of the pain inflicted. i must admit my downfall, i never told her about any of this. so, anyhoo, i asked around and found another family dr, that was highly recommended by word of mouth. i called HIS office and asked this question, first and foremost.."does dr. soldano use a disposable speculum or a stainless steel one that is sterilized by an autoclave?" they stated he used a stainless steel one, i then asked, "is he taking new pt's?" so now i see him every year without fear of pain. you see, the plastic disposable kind has a rigid edge along it peices where it was punched out of its mold, is it NOT smooth, someone was gastly unthinking. and i bet my former female dr has never had that thing jammed in her. the stainless steel speculum has a rolled stainless steel edge, therfore with some k-y, it glides! very comfortable! so there, thats my long drawn out story. hope it falls on some ears that i may help. thank for listening tyra and other out there, love, corinne breece

Tyra,
Thanks so much for doing this show. All the questions that were answered during this show were questions I would have asked. My best friend convinced me to go have a pap smear done because of cervical cancer. I am very nervous but your show really made me feel so much better. I recently just convinced one of my friends to go in for one too. Thanks for doing shows like these! You are a true role model!

Tyra, I am 20yrs old and I have HPV, and your show has helped me realize that there are so many women just like me going through the same thing. Luckly, I have such a low grade that my doctor thinks that my body might heal it on it's own. I still have to have a pap 3 times a year. My husband is my best support system and is the one who makes sure I go to my appointments and stay on top of this. But thank you for your show now I dont feel so alone.

Hey Tyra,
I just really wanted to thank you for this show. It is so important for women to have a pap test. I should know. I had abnormal cells. I had to get them removed and when I did they got them tested and I was one step away from having cancer. I was so scared. This messege really needs to be out there. So thank you so much.

Some of these ladies have questions, and I bet it's more than just them who have the same question, they just didn't send in an email.
It would be nice if some of these questions could be answered.

Hey Tyra!
I have a big problem that i think you should do a show on. I'm fourteen years old. There has been a guy my own age pressuring me to have sex and do things with him. Unfortunatly i gave in. I think that you should have a show for young girls regarding sexual harrasment with people their own age and not just old creepy looking guys. Many young people don't realize when their peers are sexually harrasing them, and just take it as a joke or shrug it off. Please help stop this

Hey Tyra,

Hi Tyra,
I am so glad that you did this show for many reasons. First of all, many of my friends are scared and procrastinate the gyno exam, and I believe it is a common problem. I am 21 years old and have been married to my husband for less than two years and I was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. My husband was my first sexual partner and I contracted HPV from him. Luckily, I started going to the gyno at age 19. I am currently battling cervical cancer, and I just want to thank you for doing this informative show. Although it made me cry because I am worried about my health, I found it informative and it will help many ladies with their 'down-there' health. I love you, Tyra!!!

Hi Tyra! I just wanted to tell you that I love your show. I think that it is great to have a talk show for young women like myself. I tried to get home in time from my boyfriends house to watch Monday's show 'what's up down there', but I ended up missing the first half. I was so disappointed!!! Like the other ladies who commented, is there any way I can get a transcript or taping of the show? If you can let me know, that would be great. Thanks a lot!!

OMG, Dot!!! Get to a doctor, please! Fibroids do not have to be painful and no woman should have to walk around with tremendous bloating and discomfort. Please let us know you are okay. We need to be proactive and care about ourselves.
