Under the Gaydar

3021%20Approved%20Large.jpg

Why is it that some gay men come across as stereotypically gay, while others aren't so obvious? Tyra guest Dr. Richard Lippa, a psychologist from California State University, says there are telltale characteristics he believes can reveal if someone is homosexual, including the way a person's hair grows, the length of their fingers, voice quality and body language. What do you think of this controversial study and the concept of “gaydar?”

hi tyra,

im vanessa patricia from the philippines and im a ladyboy. i just watch ut show abt gayradar early tonight, i know it little bit delayed here in my country but im really enjoying ur show, and most of my guess is correct wither if his gay or not. and its not also mean that if the man sway his hip while walking its consider that his gay, cuz its not so true, believe me.
hope u can also feature abt ladyboys, i would probably like it, and im looking forward to it.
to you and all ur stuff keep up the good work and god bless... i do idolized you so much. to all who can read this you can see my pics on myspace/vanessapatriciaparrilla

Tyra, I work full-time and I always try to cath little bits and peices of your show in the break room :) I was able 2 see some of the "Gaydar" episode and did not realize while I was watching it how many people would be offended by the content. I love the TYRA show and Top Model Show and wish nothing but the best for you. Keep ya head up girl!

To the homophobic producer who came up with this show topic:

you're a moron and should be fired. Lucky for you, Tyra Banks seems to be an even bigger moron to let dribble like this get put on the air.

the only surefire way to know someone's sexuality is to have an open and honest talk with them. end of story.

Oh my goodness Tyra! Loved the episode as always. I didn't think the mean would get 6/6. . .Anyways, Tyra. . .subject #1-James. He was sooo cute!!! Tell him hit me up on my email! angelofchaos-tw@hotmail.com

Tyra,

You will never be able to air shows that will interest everybody and this was one of those.
Personally.i didnt see anything wrong with the show and afterall, there have been so many beautiful shows you've aired and this one will not be a spoiler.

Keep going Gal coz what you are doing is Great and those who felt offended GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!

I only caught the last 20 minutes of the show and I'm glad I did. What practical use does such a test even have? It's so stupid! It not only reinforces stereotypes but now people will start second guessing themselves on whom they think is or isn't. Tyra said she had consulted many gay friends. If these fags lift their eyes from their fashion magazines and start looking at the real world they might have talked her out of this stupid show.

Tyra,

I don't think all people are born gay. I think many are, some are traumatized by sexual abuses etc etc etc. I don't care about someone's sexual orientation. I care what kind of person they are. Down-low men are scarier. They marry and conduct their lives as straight men, and have affairs with men. To me, be who you are. Be honest, whether gay, straight or bi. This show has given religious zealots, and gay bashers another weapon to use against those they think they can judge. I love your shows but I think this one was pointless and maybe a bit dangerous. Do a show for gay rights, that would be more productive.

I know that Tyra is Gay Supportive, love her for it, but i wonder if she realizes that this was actually an insulting and dangerous exercise. The Question i can think of is What was the purpose of the show. The unmentioned undertone here still came across as "lets identify whose gay because that would be a worse scenario." That may not have been the intent, but the bottom line is that No one would chooses to be gay, and be subjected to inspection, redicule and violence.

The Dr. may have been accurate but also misguided to think this type of study has value beyond a few chuckles at a gay man's expense. Perhaps he could have studied the causes of sexual orientation, and not the manifestations, for if it were proven to be genetic, perhaps we wouldnt be treated as less than, our straight counterparters

thanks.

well tyra i love the show. and honestly i didnt take it offensive it just showed the science can tell who is gay now.

I might also add that my ring finger is longer than my index finger and my hair grows the "straight" way AND guess what? I am gay. Also, as Chas. mentioned: Jasmine from NORTH CAROLINA who is 15(!), (and would just LOVE TO BE ON YOUR SHOW!!!,) and lindsey who is putting up her marriage on finger length(!), and Brittney from Houston (16!)- you have provided fodder for not only bigots, but also false and hurtful 'information' for young and impressionable people to judge and stereotype others. This certainly isn't science, Tyra. People are definitely born gay, people there is no doubt about it. There are MANY studies that show this, and your, mine, or anyone's 'God' does not discriminate, because, duh, 'he' -you religious zealots- made everyone the way they are, ahem, I might add 'in his likeness.' People need to reaaaallly get a grip. Tyra, you reaallly should not have aired this crap.

That was THE most offensive program I have EVER seen. Tyra and her producers should be ASHAMED. I live in San Francisco, and know MANY gay men that do not 'swivel their hips' nor do they have different articulation of their words; just as well, I know MANY straight men who do. This person who did the 'judging' is a complete quack and you all know it. There is know wonder he repeated - like a million times - that 'nothing is 100%' etc... because it is just not true. Yeah, some gays lisp and swivel, MOST don't; and it is NOT because they fear effeminate mannerisms, it's just the way they are, the same could be said for straight men. Fingers?! Cowlicks?! Give me a break.

I'm am personally disgusted by this show and further disgusted by you Tyra, for putting up such a sensational, curiously slanted show. SHAME. I am very involved in activism and trust me, you will here a lot about this one; but that's the point, huh? SHAME. You talk so much about stereotypes and how wrong they are, then you exploit those gentlemen for your RATINGS, and denegrate gays (and straights) in the process. I was completely aghast at what I'd seen. Frankly, I believe it was a total set-up. Further, how much did you pay those guys to be judged like cattle at an auction and I wonder how informed they were as to the exact nature of their part in this show?

I am completely speechless, and for those of you who say, 'oh, get over it, no big deal....' are you ignorant, blind or just stupid... This is the worst thing to make light of in today's day and age.

Well I should start by saying that I am a Tyra devote. However the this show gave me pause. The next to the last man, who was straight said it best when he questioned the practical application of this so called scientific method of identifying gay men. Unfortunately, some bigot who saw the show may have there prejudices justified by this show...and perhaps use that information in a perjorative manner. My concern is that there should have been mention of the fact that the results do not speak to a person's character. Also that it is illegal in New York City & State to discriminate against a person based on their sexual orientation or preceived sexual orientation. Keep doin you Tyra!

hey tyra this is jasmine from laurinburg, north carolina and i think that people ARENT BORN GAY!!!!!i dont want to sound religous or nothing but in the bible god says that a woman is meant to be with a man.there should be no man+man or woman+woman.so i dont think god will let someone be born gay b/c he doesnt believe in it!!!im in da 10th grade im 15 and i would love to GO ON YOUR SHOW ONE DAY!!!!

Tyra,

This show is completely obserd! "Dr." Lippa is a crock! People who are gay are born gay. PERIOD. The way someone walks or talks does not show if someone is gay or straight. Mr. (as I refuse to call him Dr.) Lippa said himself that the audience is just as right as he is, so who the hell is he to be up on that stage telling us if someone is gay or straight!? As a gay male, I am completely offended that this episode even aired! People are People, whether gay, str8, bi, whatever! It's called being HUMAN, why are we putting more stereotypes on people than we need to. Why can't we get over this and learn to live with each other as people!?!?

I just finished your 'gaydar' show and what a crock. People are who they are. The doctor seemed like a complete amateur up there not being able to specify anything. He just said "on average", well on average does not prove anything! I am a gay male and that doctor made me mad! Anyway of setting me up with #1 James??? Seriously. myspace.com/cdaaa

I was a little upset that the doctor implied that boys aren't supposed to like "girl things" and vice versa.

#1 is HOTT...you can give him my number ;)

tyra yelled at basically everyone for stereotypes, and that's what the show was all about.
then she thought a guy was gay because of his eyebrows.
?!
that was really contradicting.

One question,
How does this pertain to women? I know a lot of books and studies have been published on the issue, but every one I 've read focuses on gay men. There is little about how to detect for women, which seems to play into the idea that it's different for women to be gay than men. I'd be interested to know how they would "gaydar" women based on the parameters laide out in the episode.

I have to say that the show today was horrible. People need to realize that being a homosexual is an evil thing, read the bible.

Tyra, The reason I'm on your site is because you kept calling the show "controversial" (which I didn't think it was), and I wanted to see what others were saying (maybe I was missing something). All these Nazi comments from your viewers are a little alarmist and not very logical. Dr. Lippa repeatedly said that this was a study of averages and that it was NOT a 100%, guaranteed, pick-out-one-characteristic and you've got your answer type of thing. It was a variety of characteristics that "tend" toward a certain orientation. (How is this different than studying the physical and cultural differences between men/women, various ethnicities, ages, etc.?) If you believe that people are born gay, you should encourage this study (since the hair and finger thing would support your argument). However, I guessed 5 out of 6 correctly, and didn't pay any attention to those elements. So, the argument that it's behavioral (and learned) is also valid. So many people seemed upset over stereotypes. We all need to understand what they are – generalizations about a group, which hold some truth and can, at times, be a funny way of laughing at ourselves and others, but clearly don’t apply to every individual. Let’s take them for what they are, and just live our lives. Having said all of that, here’s my bottom line: It seems that people are a little afraid to explore this because it’s easy to feel better, or not deal with homosexuality, by saying “born that way.” I can tell you my daughter was born very energetic; but she still had to learn to control herself while sitting in class, at the table, etc. Is it the same? Not exactly, but behavior is a matter of choice. Whether it’s right or wrong is between the individual and their god. And, that’s who will be the final judge. We need to respect people, no matter how they’re born, or what they choose (even if they disagree with us). Easier said than done, I suspect.

This show was your worst. It just made people be more biased and ignorant. No matter what was said in the end, the entire show is has a bigger impact. People need to be more concerned with their own life than anothers sexual orientation.

Tyra, just finished watching the show. I'm sorry to say that you are full of fluffer-nutter on this one. I don't know if you're trying to prove to your gay friends that you're "loyal" or what, but it's fakery for you to act appalled and offended as if Gaydar never existed. Of course it does, and I've seen you joke around enough times with your gay colleagues on Next Top Model to know that YOU know that Gaydar DOES exist.

Get over it.

Tyra

Your show may have opened alot of people eyes. But my friends and I were watching it and we were so offended. You know I am so tired of the stereo type. I could send you a picture of my girl and you would never guess in a million years she was a lesbian. I get loooks and stares and those stereo types led to me loosing the love of my life. I tried to date again and my love life is hurt. B/c of stereo types b/c people have certain characteristics. It was a very hurtful show. I love all your shows this one just made me think alot about how society truly is. Get over it people can be metrosexual and be straight people can be all stars and BE GAY. My father is very metrosexual and very straight. My brother WOW 2 hrs in a bathroom and 3 showers a day loves women. So quit judging us for being US..

this is just an fyi-dr lippa on your show gaydar-does he ever ever sound just like david schwimmer of friends -never heard anyone with the exact same voice-very wierd

hey Tyra, this show was very interesting. I've been dating a guy for 3 1/2 years and sometimes wonder if he might be gay. He does theatre all the time, he graduated with a degree in theatre. He teaches ballroom dancing. He sits in a girl fashion, sometimes I'm more manly then he is. But we are going strong and I love him and maybe someday he'll propose...! You're wonderful Tyra!

This test is reminiscent of the method used by the Nazis to find Jewish people before and during WWII. Not very funny.

i have a fiance that is metrosexual and i am so afraid that one day he might turn gay and i will never be able to love someone as good as him or even fall in love again!!! idk what to do he plucks his eyebrows he clips his fingernails and toenails he loves for me to do it too but i just think its wierd1 i love the man but damn i hope he isnt gay and when i ask him even though its rude he gets pissed and i dont blame him i am so afraid of him turning gay its tearing me apart hes everything to me. he does construction work and does a hole bunch of manly things whitch i think is sooo hot but i love gay guys they are the best friend a girl could ask for hey we are interested in the same things and they are so easy to talk to someone please help me after watching this show i have to check out my fiances fingers to make sure that his index finger is smaller then his ring finger!!! we are supposed to get married next summer and i dont want to marry a gay man and my whole world fall apart... sorry if i affended any one

Very interesting. I have several friends who are gay. I have noticed some of these signs in my friends in the past. I really don't know what to think about it, it's interesting to see though. Are there any signs for lesbians?

yeah i watched and yes i have gaydar. but anyway, all i wanted to say is...

#4-Matt, omg! he is gawjust. big burley manly man. i swear if i see him, he is goin to get tha bizness! Ow! LOL!...

Good Morning,

I watched part of the "Gaydar" program...I can say first hand that women may want to consider this research. I was married to a gay man, and many gay men marry women to "Cover" thier orientation. Believe me, it is a life of hell and toxic to the women and children who have a gay husband and father.
If I knew now some signs, physical, psychological, or otherwise, it would have saved me 12 years of my life. There are many books written on straight/gay marriages. This research may be a good thing for those who stuggle daily to be who they were born to be.

I checked the show out and thats an funny show tyra my wedding finger is longer than my index finger

Everybody..get over it!! It's just all in fun. We as a nation, need to stop beating everything up! This is not going to set "everything" back! Live your life..as your own! Stop freaking out over everything that is said pertaining to people as a whole...it's just ALL IN FUN..don't over think it! JUST LAUGH!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I am a gay single guy, Is NUMBER 4 SINGLE???? I would love to meet him! Tyra, have a gay dating game..I would love to be a contestant...and all in FUN! everybody..just RELAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have 2 say I was getting ready during all this but I sat down to watch them walk out and I guessed them all by the shoes they were wearing! I mean I know no gay men who wear combat and work boots! (#5&6)

I have 2 say I was getting ready during all this but I sat down to watch thedm walk out and I guessed them all by the shoes they were wearing! I mean I know no gay men who wear combat and work boots! (#5&6)

TIE-RAHHHHH (like a TIGER RRRAAHHH - that should be your new nickname, RAH)!!!!! (I be you that NOBODY had ever started one of these comments like THAT!) Anyway, I have absolutely NO idea where I should be leaving a GENERAL comment, but anyway - I'm going to leave it here in the GAYDAR section.
Your show is so incredible, I mean.. It caters for so such a diverse range of people. Just one thing that really needs to be said, and I'm sure that you've heard it from others but you set the BEST example being the most down to earth person who isn't afraid of being who they REALLY are for everybody to see.
THATS ALL =) oh, I'm from AUSTRALIA WOOOO, so the phone number section.. err I didn't really know what to do there.
MUCH LOVE xox

Tyra, I think that this test is really biased...i mean somebody can be born with unusual voice, finger tips, blah blah blah

hello tyra this is candi, i'am a huge fan yours. i want to know when your are changing hair styles.
