Focus on Race Series

In our ongoing “Focus On Race” series, we’ve covered interracial dating, racism within racism, people who have traded races, and even guests who hate their own race. If you have an idea for the series that we haven’t covered yet, share your ideas below.

Hi Tyra,
I was in a one of your tapings for the show on race in 2004, but i never found out if it aired or got a copy. Is there any way i can get or even purchase one. It was such an awesome experience and i met people from all over the US and learned about their experiences.

Hi Tyra I think your showis great it gives people a different outlook on things and helps people think different for the better. I am half mexican and half white and when i was young i looked so dark and you could tell that I am mixed and I lost almost all of my color and I guess I have so many features from my mom without my color that I look white. and i feel like if I don't tan or put a dark foundation on I don't feel like Im mixed I feel like people dont see the beauty in being mixed So i feel ugly without color.

How americans american can buy model

Hey tyra,
I love your show!! I know that there is major racism within the country and even in the government.Yea it is true that we should have freedom of speech and religion but i think that it is WRONG to be racist against people!!!I think that we are all the same and we have the same human body parts(exept for guys...but we still have eyes, ears, noses and mouths..etc.)and we are all the same!!I think that the constution is full of flaws.Did you notice that it was written by a bunch of white guys!!why cant they have a mixture of races???Sometimes I hate the white people that came into america and stole the land then brought black slaves there.HOW RUDE!!!No offence but why cant the white english go back to where they came from???But on the other side with out those racist english people we would not be in america as it stands. We would still be living in our countries and not knowing how (as they say) the other half of live.Im sorry i missed the show because it is appeareantly controversal but i have (on my way to looking up my homework on the constution that i am suppost to be doing right now)saw these articles and comments and i could not help to add my veiw.Basically i dont know why people are racist!!Why??Its STUPID,CHILDISH, and most importantly UNFAIR!I am white and i have lots of friends that are from Many different races. If you are racist and you are reading this right now...then ask yourself this...why are you racist?why do you have the need to be rude to people and base your friends on race even though there are plenty of wonderfull people here and billions of races that are on this planet?GOSH!!you are an STUPID PIG!!!I HATE sorry excuses of people that are racist!!!HATE....Ha!...Hate!!

Hey tyra!
Im a Native New Zealander or Maori and was very touched by your focus on race episode about people hating their own race especially the one about the native american gurl hating hur own race. Racism in New Zealand isnt that big in New Zealand but definetly is there. I have friends from all over the world that i could talk freely about racism and have and we understand each other now. To hear that gurl speak about hur people having to get over the thing with the government that happenend houndreds of years ago i was woahed! In New Zealand us maoris have also been battling the problem of confiscated land and and ts not something that we just get over. Even though it occured years ago it still affects us. I think she should embrace and support her culture. It would be great also if i found out what hapened with her and the time she spent with the three native americans she abused from behind the mirror and if she finally understands her culture. The reasons she had for hating hur culture (Alcoholics abusers) is a problem every race faces its just that its in her face that she feels so strongly about it!
Thanks!
Jazmyn!

ive grown up in england and moved to new zeland when i watched the show about people hating their race i was shocked that people could hate were they come from so much but what annoyed me is that when that Dr said that all the problems in the world are caused by white people i was deeply affended the problem with americans is that you are all so ignorant to what is going on in the world and you blame everything on white people because they are an easy target .
for some reason you all seem to think that differant races can live in peace together but they can just look at new zealand it is a very multi-cultural counrty and yes there is Racism to a degree but overall we respect eachother and eachothers pasts

Hey tyra,
my name is mariah and im 16 years old and i live in perth australia.
I love your series on focus on race because i know how racism hurts as i am half aboriginal, where im half white and half black.[you proberly knew that :)]. At my school and some other schools in australia, there a groups that are one race and they dont usually communicate with other races. but my group is mixed cause in my group, there is 1 white , 1 european, 1 russian, 1 asian, 1 indian and 1 aboriginal[me]..and like recently i saw in the shops around where a group of white people were talking and 3 aboriginal people went to join the group and the white people turned around and said "go away you N [that word i cant say it.]you dont belong here" it hurts to see that happen because aboriginals was the first people on australia and to hear the white people say that its hurtful because thats my culture and its like them saying that to me..
But also to hear that in america there are familys that teach their kids to hate black people is upsetting, because would u rather let your kids grow hating every black person alive or would you rather a child who is friends with all races.

My bestfriend and Myself both hate people being racist because we both have felt it.

Yeah so i hope you have enjoyed reading my comment, hope to hear from you about it..
Much Love
Mariah :)

Hey Tyra!

I love your show and your many experiments. I was wondering maybe for your next experiment, you can go undercover as a muslim woman wearing the hijab, and show people how life is as a muslim in North America, and the barriers we face as a Black, Muslim Female! I think it would make a great episode and catch the attention of many viewers.

Thanks Alot!

Read "Written in Black and White." After experiencing racism in S.C. I put together an Art Show about it and wrote a book. Also, in 1998 took part in having removed a old law that stated that black and whites could not marry and had it voted out by 63%. I now considered myself an interracial romance writer and there are a lot of us out there that need to known. Who knows maybe one day there will be no focus on race. As one interracial couple said "The Mercklenburg marriage-license clerk wouldn't accept"human" as their race, and they refused to put "black" or "white." They became one of 11 N.C. couples listed as race "unknown" in 1997

Hi.

I was just watching your show on racism which featured Iman and three Native American women.
What the Native American Women said was so true, I live in Australia, im 22 and I didn’t even know that modern native americans existed, I was lead to believe Native Americans were eradicated. Cowboys and Indians is the only knowledge I had of Native Americans until a few years ago I saw something on CSI where the Indians had their own land and lived on reserves.

There is a similar situation here in Australia.
Aboriginals seem to be a forgotten race. Although our government has recently apologised for the stolen generation, there is a lot of hatred between the public due to aboriginals receiving unfair advantages from the government. Aboriginals to most white Australians are drunks living off of our tax money and receiving houses, cars, etc for next to nothing. I believe we have 2 or three famous aboriginals.

Australia, somehow, has managed to forget them, Australia has been overrun by the foreign races. It has become a sort of pecking order:

• Asians
• Eastern Europeans
• Whites
• Aboriginals

You can walk the streets and see millions of homeless people, all of them either white or aboriginal. There is not one foreign homeless person. Not one.

I believe everyone should see each other as equal, as human before colour, but I also understand it is very hard to do that when when your own people are treated like dirt in your own country by foreigners.

Its terrible to say but if you go to Sydney, the joke is “spot the Aussie”

I realise this is very long, but your show has stirred something inside of me which I can not contain.

The human race, as a whole, can be the most horrendous, rude, cruel and hypocritical beings on earth.

We discriminate against everything that we are not.

If you are over weight, you are made to feel worthless, unlovable and unworthy.

If you are alternative, although the EMO look seems to be in atm, finding a job is nearly impossible unless you are a piercer or tattooist

Any flaw that one may have becomes a major problem, overweight people are very rarely in a high-up place in the work force, and alternative people… well. I rest my case.

It is simply unfair.

However, I realise its not just Australia that is like this.

Australias motto is “the free country” and that is absolute bullshit

Hey Tyrah,
After watching your show I just had to add this comment.
I am a native to the land of Aoteroa New Zealand, Well I consider myself to be. My mother is Maori and my Father is well white.
I have never really met any of my white family and have only ever hung with my black family. Now that I am living in Australia I quite often see fellow Maori around but because I am so fear I to them are not one of them!!! I knew withen my family we are the most whitest maori around but I never thought because I left my country and I look fear that I would not be accepted.
We are a small country and a small race I would have thought that we could have stuck together.

I was not able to catch the whole show so I hope I am not speaking wrong or repeating a point...
I am white. I grew up in an all white community (not predjudice just in the hill towns) I never imagined dating out of my race really never thought about it one way or the other, white was all there was. Life took a turn I didn't expect and I ended up marrying a spanish man and having 2 beautiful girls. It didn't work out however we are great friends and parents and have built a community for our girls. After the divorce I wanted a good man I didn't care if he was fat, bald, short whatever as long as he loved me the way I deserved. While working in a nursing home I went out to have a cigerette and began talking to one of the new employees he was a great man who had all the values I would like in a mate, he was also black. We are together now for 5 years and it is the best relationship I have ever been in. He explained to me over time and in general conversation that he didn't date in his race, he preferred white or spanish women he said that he had never really been physically attracted to his race and I believe he has always felt a little traderish in his private thoughts about that. As he got older not only was there not a physical attraction to his race but a mental block as well. He says that he can't take the attitude, drama, or the lack of articulation within his race. He was looking for a family oriented, stress free (not going out, cheating or accusing him of cheating all the drama)smart, articulate woman and he didn't see many of them in the black community, and he really stopped dating spanish woman for the same reason.
I dislike very much the idea that I am "stealing" anone's men. Love and Likeness has no color, and I don't believe that inter racial couples go out looking to steal from the black woman.
I was actually have the exact opposite conversation with my fiance last week. I was watching commercials and realized there are all white families on TV all spanish families on TV and all black families on TV, shows commercials all that, but I never see and inter racial couple and their beautiful children that don't match each other walking down the street, or sharing a life. A few movies maybe and a steaming white woman experimenting with the sexuality of being with a black man for an episode. The real world is browning and I think it is beautiful and will ultimately put an end generations from now to prejudice, cuz if we are brown is the majority...need I finish. Why was there such an outrage against this concept on your show when you usually preach acceptance. And one more point why are you devalueing the mixed children by saying that their mother stole their father from his race?

Hi Tyra,

My name is Amelia and I watch your show from the Caribbean Isle of Trinidad. I'm amazed at the level of racism still existing today and would like the rest fo the world to know that we here in Trinidad and Tobago .. although having probelms like everyone else ... live in a multi-racial society. Our population consists of negroes, chinese and indians who make up most of the population. As well as people from the US, Italy, Holland, England, Germany, Venezuela, Lebanon and other middle eastern countries. Maybe one day I can tell you the key to co-existence amongst these maney races and one thing that bonds us! It is not uncommon to see a dark skinned woman or man with a fair skinned companion. Infact mixed couple make the most beautiful children I believe and you would get a stare or two because of that but not because you shouldn't be with the other person because of their race. I admit that there are a few who would like to bring back racism by calling names but we've been through slavery and it's now time to exercise freedom of choice.

Keep up the good work!

Hey Tyra, I'm a first generation american, my family is panamanian and brazilian. I'm a black hispanic. To black people I'm not, I'm Hispanic and to Hispanic people I'm black. I find at times when I'm filling out applications they often have that option, Black non-hispanic. I've been judged by both races and often discriminated against by both. I wonder what do people really see me as, black or Hispanic

Hi tyra,
i just want to say that i love your show. i learned so many things from your show. about the racism thing. it's all over the world now, and we can't stop it. i just personally think that this problem is typically normal.i have witnessed this so many times. i just hope that we shouldn't belittle other races, in fact, we should love them.thanks. and godbless

Dear Tyra,
Today I watched your show about interracial dating and black women. Well, I am a white woman and my fiancee is black and my son is mixed. I am fed up with hearing about how "white women are stealing all the black men". I feel that everyone has the right to the pursuit of happiness and if my man makes me happy then that should be all that matters. Why is this such a big issue. I am tired of the nasty looks from black women when my family and I are out on the town. I have even had a black woman tell me to go back to my own kind and to stop spreading the "white girl disease". Everyone in the country preaches continually about equality and freedom. Well shouldn't you be free to date and/or marry whomever you chose? I'm the one who goes home to my man everynight not American so what is the big damn deal?? Tyra, I think that this would be a fabulous topic for you to discuss on your show. Why all the hate? Why is it so bad to date out of your race? And why are black women so against the white women? No one ever takes the time to look at this issue from the white woman's eyes.

Sincerely,
Alicia

I think all people of other races besides white come down on white people to hard? erope, hitler, the wall, napolion! all I have to say is darfur Africa, gangiskan, and mexico prison! I think they were just as in-humane as the rest. so I belive then that it is all normal what most races did that was considerd in-humane. And all most American black people whant to do is evolve this world into one race and I belive it is unfair to all races and it being said by it's self shows black people are racist in a different way in America, and people like this are ignorant not to leave diversity alone in this world! I love all races but this is very wrong and I do feel bad for the people that always get caught up in the middle because people like you. "Preaching what is right and wrong" how ignorant, and all 99 comments here are subject to your teachings confusing them even more and now there all just as ignorat! People like you are going to make this world boaring and dull!!! If there is a pro black person on here I have respect for you, and that goes for any other brother of another skin color that hates this idea of a one race world. I love my brothers the way they are but im not racist but nither are they. But they are proud and I'm proud for them too. and there is nothing negative to make from this "it is great"

Dear Tyra

My name is Patricia, I am a..hummm...I guess white woman...born in Mozambique, Africa...and if you go back in time I am third generation Mozambican. I am just surprised when I watch your show (among many others) regarding african americans on how easy people put labels on people without really understanding what they are saying. I personally don't call african americans that name as most don't have anything of African anymore nor would they ever exchange their lives in America for a life in Africa..I would call everyone American..I am African and my race is white...not white african...if it was to called them by race, I will call them black like I am white. Anyway..something to think about...how african are african americans...really..
Thanks
P.

This is a show that has many different targets but you have forgotten the Native American population....Ask us and find out what we go through every day.

Hi,

I am one of many Australian women watching your show, I have just veiwed a segment from Focus on Race where a black woman was made to dress as a muslim for a day. I am offended, why should anyone be made to dress as a muslim, a muslim women would NEVER walk a day in a white or black persons shoes to experience the fear and hatred that the muslim religion has instilled in the Western world with their extreme views and absolute hatred of all things Western, particularly American. The muslim woman belittled the black woman by telling her that the way she dressed did not illicet respect from men. I beleive that Muslim women have no confidence or self respect due to the continual dominance of muslim men and their stature as second rate citizens and possesions. This was a very biast experiment. Very wrong Tyra.

Dear Tyra/Producers/whoever will read comment #1,045

I have only recently started watching the show and I am very much impressed with the dealings of race, sexuality, and such on here. It may have been discussed already, but you should bring up the topic of "white guilt." Pretty much it is the guilt felt by white people because of their skin color. No one in my family has ever owned slaves or that I know of, put anyone down because of their race. But I am ashamed of the color of my skin because other white people have. It is the feeling of the entire world blaming you for things that white people did hundreds of years ago, or even now when I meet someone from the middle east.
I thought it would be an interesting topic for your show. I don't think anyone else has discussed this publicly before so it would be a first as well.

thank you for your time,
Lauren

Hey! As with the post below, I am also from Australia and watching this for the first time. I am so disgusted with the reactions of some people that it makes me ashamed to even be considered human. I am a 19 year old Caucasian female, and although I have never received any type of prejudice against me, I am horrified with your guests who are trying to 'justify' their racism by saying they have been persecuted in the past. Disgusted and horrified with this. I never want to be ashamed to have the life that I have now, and hearing these comments makes me disgusted to be human.
