Become Debt Free
Lynnette Khalfani is a personal finance expert, money coach, and the author of The Money Coach's Guide to Your First Million. She offers these tips for living a debt free life. No matter how much money you make, if you want to live debt free your monthly/weekly budget should look like this:
ITEM & MAX %
Rent/Housing 35%
Car 15%
Food 15%
Savings 10%
Car Insurance 5%
Utilities 5%
Clothing 5%
Entertainment 5%
Miscellaneous 5%
Tips to becoming financially responsible and eliminating debt:
#1: GET ORGANIZED AND HAVE A PLAN OF ATTACK
To get rid of your debt you first have to really know how much debt you’re in. If you’re not opening your bills than you don’t really know how much debt you’re in. You need to get a credit report and get a FICO score. That’s what the financial world (future landlords, car dealerships, etc) looks at to judge you. It ranges from 300-850 and the higher your score, the better your credit. You need to know where you stand.
#2: PUT IT ALL DOWN IN BLACK AND WHITE
List all of your bills and expenses. Having that credit report will help to keep you honest. List the total balances, minimum due and interest rate and then add monthly living expenses to the list, prioritizing the things that you need. The money allotted to these things should still be based on the wage percentages from your responsible budget. Depending on how much debt you have, that list of needs should be as short as possible (i.e. $7000 birthday parities are not a necessity) with any left over money going towards the debt. If at the end of this list the bills and living expenses still exceed income, than you need to take more action.
#3: MAKE THE CREDIT CARD COMPANIES FIGHT FOR YOUR BUSINESS
As far as creditors are concerned, you are a customer for life and they don’t want to lose your business. You can call up high interest creditors and tell them that you have other companies offering lower rates. Most companies will lower the rates as long as you are making consistent payments. It may be worth it to transfer your balance to a company that will offer a really low rate, even if it only for a limited time.

I'm a mother of 4children for years a was a single mother and had to learn to live on a budget for the sake of my children. I can say though that all the advice and things taught to my children are paying off now because my 2 older children who are ages 19 and 18 share an apartment and are doing very well for themselves because I taught them early the truth about being on your own.And to this day neither has ever own a credit card!!! I'm not a professional but if you need someone to give just great tips for those in need call me... I would love to help. Now that I'm married because i'm use to not having alot when I was single when my husband married me he didn't incure debt(other than the kids..lol) Even now we have no care note, credit card debt, just the bills that it takes to have a running household. This also thanks to my parents that taught me early how less stressed you would be with less debt. And it is true. I'm a survivor of domestic violence, being homeless, and not earning alot of money but you can make it. It is all up to your choices... thanks for letting me post a comment!! Cheryl
P.S. This is a great topic to have for the younger generation to have... awesome!

I've read the article for become debt free. It's funny that it's so easy to say a step by step plan how to become debt free. But the reality of that it is not easy as you think. I got into debt because I was scammed. It's so frustrating to think that there are people out there living just to screw other people who work hard to live good. Anyways, I was looking for the link where to write tyra but I couldnt find it too. I just want to share that don't be a victim of online scammers. Before deciding on things consult your friends and families. Here's the info of the scammer..so beware of this:

Hello Tyra,
Though I did not watch this segment of your show, I know that it helped people in many ways.
I am planning on investing in the stcok market in the future and maybe you might contact me or anybody here might give me some tips on how to invest in the stock market so that I might make as many returns as possible and that my principal remain intact and not be wiped out. I have heard of people making fortunes in the stock market, but I have also heard of people losing out. So, I need some guidance and help.
Onto, another issue, I also need help in budgeting my money and my time, especially my time. Sometimes I tend to forget what I should be doing and at what time, so I need help to get a system where I can budget my time and use it correctly.
I have not watched your show for a while and I must say, I miss seeing your radiant personality light up my TV screen. It's the weekend here and I do not get to watch the show until Monday. I can't watch the videos online, because internet access is a little bit slow, but I am hopeful that it is going to improve in the future, since Africa needs to get on the information technology bandwagon if it is to keep pace with the world. But I digrace, this is about you, about money, and about the show. And I must say again that I can't wait to watch your show again. Please ensure that you cater to those of us who are on the male side of the Homo sapien species.
What else is there for me to say. Here is a small poem I composed for you.
Your smile radiates warmth like the shiny rays radiating sunlight in the morning.
Your eyes are like, a tome that someone has to read to get the messages that are hidden in the sepluchres of your skull.
You speak like you are singing, and even the birds of the air have to stop and do a dance when your show is on.
The laughter that comes from your mouth is like a lullaby to a child who is sleeping. It feels so good it puts me to rest.
Your spirit, is so forceful one has to be well girded to come close to your presence.
Be good and keep up the good work.
Yours,
Paul
Chao, and lot of love.

Hello,
I have never written a comment to any show before but felt so strongly compelled to write now. I watched the Tyra show regarding living on the cheap. I was mortified to see the pie chart and the percentages we should live by while budgeting our money. I couldn't believe the amount allocated to utilities. I live in Northern New York. I am on the budget with National Grid. They provide my heat/electricity. I get my gas in my car at the local gas stations. Together this expense is as much as my housing allowance should I say mortgage payment. If Tyra or anyone really reads this for feedback I have something very important to say. People are in foreclosure on their homes in record numbers. Why do you ask. Because they are paying so much for energy. We have the choice of putting gas in our cars and keeping our homes warm or paying the bank for our monthly mortgage payment. Since the prices have skyrocketed I have gotten behind enough mortgage payments for the bank to foreclose on my home. This is only a few thousand dollars. My annual income is around $40,000 a year and that you think should be sufficient. I do not qualify for any programs to help and my family can't help. While all the charity money is being raised to help people the big problem in America is being overlooked. That is home foreclosure. People that have worked hard and honestly are losing their homes. I hope this draws attention from Tyra herself. America is in trouble, not just the minumum wage workers are suffering. Please check the statistics on foreclosures. So many people could benefit from just a little help to stop this. Thank you for reading this. The pie chart is a horrible reflection of reality.

Hello, I know this is not on topic but I am trying to find the link to send an email to Tyra. My little sister is really trying to get started in the modeling business and I am not sure where to get good information from; meaning training for runway and such. I would also love to contact this Financial Advisor on identity theft I am in the National Guard and having a hard time coping in civilian life after Active Duty. Can someone please email me with some advice?

Tyra,
I just wanted to know if you knew how Lynnette Khalfani became a money coach. I just graduated college and I always wanted to be the next
Suze Orman :) I've seen Lynnette around (her books and appearances on television, Oprah and your show). I've been searching for a few years for the right direction... so i figured i'd ask you and you can ask her or OOO! maybe this is a show idea. Have young woman like myself who are starting their careers shadow someone they admire or want to be like (like an internship)... so (who wants to be a model/actess/singer/t.v. host/camp owner/ect.) someone could follow you around for the day and get the feel of it and if they are still interested... anyway i've gone a bit off track. so if you know how she got to where she is today please fill me in. I really want to help people with their finances

Coming from someone who went bankrupt and started over again with a mere $75 to my name and now runs 2 businesses and have a lot of $$ in the stock market.
My advice is to invest in yourself first. I buy cheap cars and if they break down I leave them and buy another one. Easy to walk away from a $1000 car that breaks down and buy another one. Medical Saving Accts are a good idea, go with a prepaid cell phone plan. Those are some ideas.

Hello Tyra,
I think that what you are doing for the women in your Tzone foundation is really good. You are a really good role model and women who come from disadvantaged environments need a role model like you who they can look up to. I am really proud of what you are doing for yourself and for women all over the world for I know that your show reaches out to many women.
As a thought, you might want to focus part of your attention on African women, for I believe that Africa would be in a worse place if it were not for the women in it. So, in your endeavourse do not forget to educate and to reach to African women.
Especially in my small town of Mombasa in Kenya. The women here are really hard working and they are the ones who keep life going by the hard work that they do. So, you might one day in the future want to have an outreach program for the women in my small town of Mombasa.
Lot's of love.

Hello Tyra,
It's me again, Paul. As I said before you are going to put me in debt, you might have to pay me for writing so much in these message boards. I am just kidding by the way, because I love to write and this gives me an excercise so that I can improve my talent.
Yeah, as I said before I loved you journal section and your other section on the Tyra's World section of the website. I also checked out the Tyrabanks.com website and I have to say that your photos are banging. You look pretty hot. I am not sure if I should say this as a fan, I do not want to to turn into a groupie you know.
I have been to three cyber cafes in a span of one hour, just because I had to write to you. I do not mind though, I kind of enjoy penning this tid bits.
Lots of love.

What can I say, I am in thehabit of writing to you all the time nowadays. It is a habit that I relish yet it is bad because it is going to put me in debt. You are too much, you know you should pay me for writing these things all the time.
By the way, I checked out the "Tyra's World" section of your website and I realize that you are someone that is really serious and someone that has accomplished a lot in your life time. I have no clue how I am going to handle myself when we eventually meet, because something tells me that we are going to meet one day.
It was cool see that your put a photograph of yourself in your journal, that is very personal and with no make up on. That shows that you are comfortable with yourself and you really want the world to see you for what you really are instead for what people want you to be. I will write more next time.
Love you lots,
Keep up the good work.

Hello Tyra,
Firstly, Hope you are having a wonderful day. I am doing good. I am also very much in debt since I have some college loans that I have to pay for. Also, I have cash flow problems since I am still living with my parents and I am jobless. So, I sometimes have to swallow my pride and just ask my parents for money.
Debt aside, sometimes I feel like we as humans owe ourselves so much. We owe it to ourselves to make sure that we love the people around us. We owe it to ourselves to enjoy the sunrise in the morning. We owe it to ourselves to look each other in the eye and hug one another when we meet as lovers do, or as the birds do when ther are fyling high in the morning breeze.
I believe that we are always in debt for the important things in life, the most important of all being that we do not love enough, so we owe each other love.
I hope I get to meet you in person one day because you radiate so much warmth and love, and I for one think that you are one of the person that puts the balances the account of love, because you compensate for the people who do not love. I would love to meet a person such as you and reward you for you need to be rewarded for all the work that you do.

I absolutely enjoyed this show to the fullest. Usually I am not home to watch but during the summer months I get work until 1230 on fridays. I enjoyed this show because I can see myself in Tiffany's position if I don't get my act together (which I am in the process of doing). My mom and I immigrated from Guyana. She felt that in order for me to have a chance at a good life we had to leave. She worked 2-3 jobs at a time to make ends meet for us and to be able to send me to private school, because where we lived the public school it was nothing but trouble. So when it was time for me to go to college I knew I would have to do it on my own. Now I'm a college graduate $90,000 in debt with Sallie Mae loans that I just consolidated with Education Finance Partners. I am married with a little girl an only making $35,000 a year. I also use shopping to heal wounds that were left by being sexually abused by a close member of my family (only my husband knows and some of my friends). I have so much to live for but sometimes I get overwhelmed with all the debt and bills and I feel that I can't take life anymore. And when I get that feeling I have to shop, it seems to take away all the self doubt, the anger, the low self-esteem and other feelings I can't explain. I really don't want to shop but I also don't want to feel like ending my life. I love my daughter and my husband and I don't want to hurt them by putting us further in debt but as soon as I think I'm making progress here comes the feelings of self hate again. I really want my life to be more enjoyable without having to always apologize for spending what we don't have because I can't get my feelings under control. Please if anyone out there has some tips on how to clear my feelings and control them so I can control my spendings please email me. I need help before I lose my husband, he has been my rock through everything and I'm scared if I don't get it together I'll be the next "tiffany". Thank you in advance.

Getting off of debt is the worst and hardest things in life! How can a 15 year old make $$$? i need to move ASAP, before i'm dead! please help.!!!

After watching the show I kept saying to myself that I recognized "Tiffany". Then I realized I had seen her on Dr. Phil. I'm sure she is in debt but why does she feel the need to continue to go on national TV to brocast her business? I think she is fake and phony sitting up there on that stage asking for attention. Dr. Phil offered her and her husband help, by puttin gthem on a budget, and making her get rid of things. I think the show I saw her on aired last year and her story has remained the same. She does not want help she wants attention.

Hello,
you know how everyone is saying how they are in debt. well I am too, don't get me wrong, but no one talks about how hard it is to get a loan when you have little to no credit, and you don't go to school. Or you don't have anything you could use as collateral, because you can't afford full coverage on your vehicle. I have tried to get a loan for only 3000.00 with a co-signer and still nothing. I wish SOMEONE could help people with this. I am only in debt by 4000.00, and its because of hospital bills from having my beautiful baby girl. I am 22 and eight months later I still can't catch up on my bills. My boyfriend/Fiance lost his job and now has two jobs and we are playing catch up with the morgage. It sucks!! I was taught young that its better to own a house than to rent and move all the time like we did when we were young, and I would hate to lose our home and put my daughter through that. Maybe you could talk on that subject the next time you talk about debt free, talk about credit and what that really intales. Thanx DR

I think Lynnette's information is vital, but for my personal situation, I don't have studen loans, I have one credit card that I owe less than $3000. on. I have an auto loan that I owe on the car was reprosessed, I have medical bills, utility billes, judgements from an apartment I rented, A furniture rental company (which they said was done in error, but have no way of canceling the judgement. My credit reprot is not great, my score is very poor. I am 30 years old, I have an 11 year old som. I am working making $2200.00 per month after taxes. I am interested in following Lynnette, but it seems like there may be some missing steps that I need to take before I start with her plans. My financial woes go deeper than what is tped in this message. I want to discuss them with Lynnett directly. I have ssen so moany companies who promise results in cleaning up your credit report and score, But Lynette is the one of two financial expert that can teach you where you went wrong with your relationship with money, how to repair your relationship with money, and also how to maintain a healthy relationship with money. The item & max% chart looks to be a great thing, but as I have said, I think if Lynnette knew all that was going on with me, there may be another first step. Please contact me, I am drowning, I can't find any where to rent to live due to my credit score, and now I am told employers are now checking your credit score as a determination for hiring you in all fields of work.

Dear Tyra,
I watched your show and I was impressed. I was married for 23 years. I paid my bills on time for the last 30 years. My credit score was as high as you can get. I purchased my last car in 2003 without a down payment and 0% financing. What happened? Divorce! My credit has gone straight to hell! I have credit card accounts that I owe because I opened them on the request of my exhusband. He couldnt open them, his credit was already too high in ratio to his pay. I will pay them he said. Well I know no one can predict the future. But now, like a lot of other women in this country, I am over my head in debt and I dont want to file bankrupcy. If you do a show on debt and divorce - call me! In the meantime I will be purchasing your girl Lynnette Khalfani's book. She was on point. I am under ratio in most of the areas she talked about. But because of the amount of bills there is no way I can pay them and eat. But I will write you again after I read the book and tell you what happened. Tyra I have to do this. I have a 10 year old, I am 47 and time is running out. Tyra, there are many women out there in the same boat that I am. I know because I work with them. Dead beat husbands and dead beat men. Thanks for doing the show. It gives me some hope.

Hey Tyra,
My husband had a really good job and was the only one working. But he reverted back to an old habit walked off the job and ran his credit card up $8000 in one month alone.(He pretended to go to work everyday for months). I have 2 babies and the cost of a sitter is more than I am able to make. I own a condo that I am barely able to keep and my mortgage payment is the same price as apartments in bad neighborhoods. I hate to say it but I missed the show! Well husband is back in the picture and working but now we can't afford a thing due to the high credit card bills. Where do I start? Thanks for keeping it real Tyra. Much Love.

I think if your on a budget and you want something nice, try buying gift cards that don't expire and save them up for that favorite thing you want. I'm still working on my coach bag. I can't spend that kind of money up fron I have 2 kids!!!!

I'm glad your skin has cleared up from that expensive "poop" as i like to call it.I personally use noxema products and love the aftermath. Anyways i know i'm one of a million that write but here goes nothing. I have to say you are probably the most down to earth realistic and honest talk show person ever!!and trust me i've seen it all...maybe too much. well, gotta run and play with the little one. God Bless you and take care of yourself. Love Lydia

First off, I think this was a really great show. I know I can use this as a stepping stone to get back on track. I actually wrote down all my expenses and put them into this pie chart and surprisingly everything was right on point, except my rent that was a tad higher than 35%. I even worked in money that should be allocated to savings and to prior debts I owe and you can imagine my surprise, when I noticed I still had money leftover for the month. Honestly I think most people have more money than we actually think, we just dont know it because we may have never really sat down and tried to budget. I have decided to whole heartedly give this a try. Pray for me though, I am a recovering shopaholic!!!

Remember when shopping for deals use cash. What is the point of getting 50% off when you are paying interest on credit cards. Some department store credit cards charge 23%. If you must use a credit card get an American Express Card (the one that requires you to pay the balance in full each month)this will help curb the "need" to shop.

Hi Tyra, I love your show. It is like having a friend over. Yesterday's show on budgeting made me look at my finances and a realistic monthly spending plan. I have worked for 18 years and now looking for a job. I have spent my savings and now in serious debt. The tips will have special meaning once I try to overcome my present situation. Thanks for keeping it real with all of your guests.

I loved this show! I am usually working when the show is airing, so this was a treat! I am a "financial fitness" faciltator in our town. We use this to prepare people for homewonership. This is a wonderful book, and I will add it as a resource for our clients! As a single mom of two, I know how difficult it is personally to make it on one income, let alone plan ahead for those "extras". I NEVER buy things that are not on sale. We go to thrift shops, and hey, looking for a finding a great bargain makes it fun! I feel like a millionaire when I can find a used coach bag for 30 bucks at goodwill. Talk about savings!

Heyy Tyra,
Well I know how much young teenagers just love to spent their money whether it is on clothes, or shoes.Alot of my friends like to spend money on expensive clothing. Then they realize that they have no more money left in their bank. Some teenagers have jobs these days but still seem to spent alot of money. Some tips that me and my friends use it is not always go to the clearance racks or the stuff that is on sales. Also with shoes. One of my friends has to have a differnt shoes each time she wears a new outfit. Thanks for the tips Tyra!! Much love..xox

In the show, How to live large. i am curious to know what percentage should be covered on education?
Posted by: Lydia | January 15, 2007 3:44 PM
For Stephanie,
I know my mother in law just recently had a heart attack and is a very low income family. She didnt have insurance at the time and racked up about $30g's in ER bills, helicopter bills, ... there was a program called catholic charities that the hospital provided for families in her situation that would cover some if not all of her debt. You could also look into getting a state funded medical card (public aid) which hospitals and some dr's accept it just a matter of looking into dr's to see who does and who doesnt. Best of luck to you!
I dont necessarily think that Lynette was trying to come across saying that no one knows how to budget there money, but was saying to those that spend there money un-wisely and end up in situations where they could have avoided per say.

Money Saving Tips/Life-long Lessons:
Avoid puchasing items at regular price at all costs! When shopping, go straight to the clearance rack. If there is nothing there that is of interest to you, proceed to the sale (or percentage off rack). Now, if you still didn't find anything,"spot" something that you want that is regular price and "watch it" until it arrives in the "ideal price range" for you to make the purpose.
Better yet, "get a buddy" in the store. Buddies are valuable assets. They can alert you to upcoming sale promotions, possibly set something aside, give you a "warning call" when there is a "must see-----must buy opportunity," they set aside money saving coupons for you, and even reduce the price for any reason such as "damaging out---final sale items."
Get on mailing lists (e-mail and USPS)because there are many "perks" attached to mailing lists especially for birthdays, hoildays, anniversaries, and frequent customers.
Use and search for coupons in the store, newspapers, on-line, from a friend, and etc.
Get rid of all of your credit cards and only keep a Visa Check Card. That way, you can't over spend unless you are a "bounced check fan."
Carry a minimal amount of cash on your person. This is great for overspenders. Once you realize that you ran out of money, "something will click in" and signal that you need to get back into control of your spending.
Never ever purchase a brand new car! In the year and month of 9-11, I took a "big hit!" I bought a Chrysler 300M. I wanted this car for a very long time. I traded my new Nissan Pathfinder in for this car. Can you believe this? Basically, it was my loss and someone else's gain. I was given such a great deal on the truck and I was blessed to get it before the year even was here. It's embarrassing to admit that as soon as I drove the $32,xxx plus (that's back when it was a "hot commodity")300M off of the lot, it depreciated from that amount to $19,xxx. This was one of the worst mistakes of my life. So, please never buy new. After studying, hanging with some rich people, and "taking a hit" myself, I know better. Buy gently used. Vehicles decrease in value. Let someone else "take the hit." You will reap the benefit guaranteed especially when there is still a warranty. Also, invest only in the vehicles that will hold their value! Cady, BMW, Benzo, Jag, and etc. If you have the patience to wait, like I did, you can wait approximately 3 years and save over $30,xxx off of the price of a Cady (Escalade). I actually bought an '00 Escalade for over $30,xxx off of the price of a new one. I get compliments all of the time! Waiting 3 years was a smart move....I made the purchase in '03. My ole' school is still going strong. I change the oil often and have only had to replace the fuel pump (which I have learned that all Cady vehicles need that at about 90,xxx miles and a battery (which that is to be expected when I have 135,xxx miles plus on the truck.
I could go on and on. I could even write a book...don't you think? There are plenty of stories to share and facts to give.
If you follow my advice, you will save a bundle of dough!

well sorry to say but i dont think that what Lynnette says is all that. most ppl know how to pay there bills! but what do you do when you have medical bills that are way out of control? you cant control medical problems! we dont have criedit cards and we have junk cars so we dont have that payment. but we still cant make payments on each bill each month for medical. and we cant skip medicine. or dr. app. so if someone has a answer for that let me know. tyra has my e-mail.
