Hi Tyra, I live a simple life. I take care of my father who is going through cancer for the fifth time and I devote my life to my parents and my only son. I still stay presentable because I believe it is important. I was able to get my Associates Degree just before my dad came down with the fifth cancer. I am having to put my life on hold until he gets through this obstacle in life. He is hopefully on his last chemo and then has 2 hip replacements and maybe 2 knee replacements to look foward to and until then I will be by his side. I am 37 today-Jan.12 and have been dealing with his cancer for almost 20 years now. I have always wanted to go to the Emmy's or some type of award show with my older brother, mom, dad, and my son if possible, as well as get the star treatment as far as looks. I lost a tooth due to a cavity last year and for me it was devastating because I've always believed no matter how pretty you are, when you smile and your teeth are ugly or missing, that's all someone needs to see as they turn away.lol But I feel this is true. It would cost over 2 grand to get it fixed and because I am my fathers 24/7 nurse/caretaker, I can't work to afford it. I do my best to not complain and basically introduced myself to half of the neighborhood, so my son could have friends his age to play with. I have never had a real vacation and I even feel guilty for asking for something for myself, but you only live once, so I thought I would try. I am also currently trying to get an idea pattented and a book published about where babies come from-without the stork-and I would settle for any of these dreams. I tell my son all the time, that dreams are always attainable no matter how old you are. You have to keep working toward goals, stay off drugs, and keep people around you that will keep you positive and optimistic. I know I am asking for a lot, as are many others. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I am glad that you are someone others can look up to in such a positive way. Keep up the good work, you have a lot to be proud of.

Hi Tyra

I'm not sure if your kind invitation applies to the UK. I'm a (mature) African English, young lady in my late 30's. I've had a hard life but I'm a fighter, I've survived abusive relationships, the loss of a child, depression, the ups and down of the career world but I've always tried to do my best. My dream is to have recognition for my work as a novelist which examines the human condition, crosses race and culture divides. So far I'm told its innovative and fresh, but of course, I've treated it as a hobby, partly because doing a 9 to 5 job, seemed safe and sensible, at least to pay the bills. I'm also aware of the psychology of being afraid to shine.. so I've resolved to work to develop my art. I'm an observer of life, people, I love words and I examine these with some observational humour in my writing and I'm excited. I am articulate, driven and smart but for so long I've allowed myself to get into survival mode as opposed to 'shining'.
I was 'let go off' from work recently. I've decided to throw myself into being creative and make my stamp. Women like yourself and the Beyonce Knowles of this world, inspire and motivate me, you symbolise that courageous stepping out into the world and shining! What awesome role models. I've played it safe, for so long. I've been a workaholic, using work to compensate for all sorts of inner turmoil. Now, I don't want to sit on my talent and creativity. I wish I had stepped out earlier, but I guess things happen when they are supposed to. To be honest, some of the pain I've had, has made me a better writer but I would urge young people to step out and maybe learn on the way, as I'm a pefectionist and sometimes that makes you procastinate.

Next year, I have a big birthday and I've said ok its now or never, so I'm reaching out for every opportunity,with every fibre of self belief and most importantly, I'm putting the work in to develop my art and promote myself and my talent as opposed to working and hiding myself under job titles which sound grand but kill my dreams.

So Tyra, if you could help, that would be super. If not, you know what, even writing this is me breaking out of my comfort zone.

Morrissey from the Smiths is preforming in NZ next year and I want her to meet him because early this year my Sister and her Fiance Barry went to England kent on a lavender farm for a working holiday. on July the 4th Morrissey was going to be playing in london and Barry was going to take for her birthday because it was on 3rd of July but on the 1st of july Barry had a accident. He fell about 4metres through a shed roof and shattered the back of his skull leaving him instantly brain dead my sister saw the whole thing and she was only 21 she had been with Barry for 5 years engaged for the last 2 they were going to get married when they got back from England .Alicia had to run and get help she returned and held Barry in her arms until he died and told him that she loved him.on the 3rd of July she spent her Birthday at the morgue. She had no family in England with her and none of us could afford to fly to England to be with her. She spent a week in England by herself before flying home. We laid Barry to rest on the 18th July 2008 in his home town Christchurch. Alicia is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. but i know that if she gets to meet Morrissey it will help her because Morrissey was Barrys favourite singer and hers also his songs carry stories and messages which she can easily relate too. i know if she gets this it will do so much, she has been through so much.
