Do you think weight and physical features make a difference when it comes to defining beauty across cultures?

Dear Tyra, sometimes i feel sad because my mom is overprotective and like if my mom sees me hugging a guy she will think''something is going on'' and we;re just friends and i like this guy zac and we hangout and she thinks that we're doing something bad and we're not but anyways sometimes i also feel like she won't let me live my life then she'll say '' igave you life i put food in your mouth''and so on like i was talking to my mom about the 8th garde prom and the homecoming dances she said that i'm not going to none of those dances. i was like WHAT! i have always wanted to feel like a princess and also with the
quincenera, she doesn't want to do something big for me just for one thing so i think m mom is being messed up. well thanks for reading what i've gotta say and i luv ya as a friend! p.s. i watch your show everyday! and i'll write later bye
! p.s i'm 13!

Hey Tyra! First of all peace to u and i love yew! Anyways i Read some of these comments and im like WTF! That is because some girls are vuluptious and their always like " I know im curvy but i'll try to be confident and i'm proud of it" what i dont understand is why do people who are curvy feel pressured to be thin or think their fat? their NOT their simply curvy and bootilicious their SO LUCKY! i mean look at BEyonce, Oprah, look at curvy you. Well you know how people who are bootilicous are pressured to be thin? i'm like that accept the opposite. i WANT to be more bootilicious i think i have some kind of complex because my cousins say that i have a big bum and im curvy. my Extended family say that im fat, and i think im curvy but i can't get enough of the butt! It sounds mad but i wish i had a bigger butt, how can u make an arab girl with black heritage from both sides not obsess about the Badonk donk and about feeling threatened by other African Bootlicious gurls. dont get me wrong im not an evil person i just feel bad about myself when isee bootilicious girls, i think maybe is a confidence issue although i help others become confident but dont listen to myself, and i realized maybe i have a jealousy issue. PS. Im obsessd with beyonce. :( sad i know. You have NO idea how upset i get. thanks love u. By the way thanks for inspiring me and every other girl cause whenever my family keeps on tellin me im fat, i think about u and how u defended yourself and other girls, i look them fierce in the eye and say: "Im Curvy wit abit of Booty" and i Love it. U dont have to b thin to b beautiful. but then again everybody is beautiful in their own way. "Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder" HOLLA:D amen k im gone now. :)

Hey Tyra,
Im 16 years old and go to highschool in florida, but it seems there is a real trend going on, if you look around, every girl is white, or has a fake tan, has straight blonde hair, skinny, and most of them are fakes and pretend or have no common sence. Most of the guys at my school for some reason are into that. I however am a mix of nationalities, im dark, have curly hair,an honors student and i look completley different from all the girls in my school, im not over weight or chubby but i do have curves and it seems as if all the guys are not interested in that, and to someone of my age it makes one so self concience about everything, i know i should appreciate what I have and ebrass it, but its as though everyone at my school only want white girls, not even interested in girls of ethnicity.

I have to agree with Allyson, she wrote the comment on 9/17/07, because people who are thicker and have curves are always talking about skinny girls. I'm skinny and I always get comments that put me down because of the way I look. I just feel that people should stop judging others because of what they look like whether you're chubby or skinny. To people who are thicker they see us as skinny people that we have no curves and that only thick people have curves. I do feel like that I need more chest and booty to make it look that I got curves but I'm only 17 and should be thinking about this stuff that everyone judges me about.

Personally, i hated the way this episode turned out. I am a african american, many would refer to me as " lightskinned" and i hate the fact that along with being 'light' i also don't have the curves that our black radce has seemed to obtain. All i hear is bigger girls saying how.. " skinny people this, and skinny people that". I find it fustrating that everybody seemes to down on skinny girls. I did not ask for this body, i personally think the curvier you are the better, BUT i have to work with what i have, and if you don't like it, than simply don't look at it.

tyra,
I am a 15 year old girl from oregon moving to ohio in january.i was watching the show flashing back on all of the most interesting race related issues today, and when the white girl was talking about how the black womans butt wasnt accepted in the white culture...it was very frusterating.it portrayed a view saying that white girls don't have butts...don't want butts...and don't think they are sexy.my mom and i both have it going on in the back and its something im proud of and my friends wish they had more junk in the trunk.he he .the thing is...in the white culture.its something thats also appreciated.you dont have to be white, black, indian, mexican or any other race to have a certain opinion on the size of butts which u find attractive.im proud of who i am.and im proud of what my momma gave me :).if you have another show that needs an opinion of a white teenage girl.count me in. one of my dreams is to be a plus sized model and win antm.i will never be as small as jaslene.but i love what i got and have confidence.please write me back.you are like a big sister with your awsome advice to me.thanks

Hey Tyra what's going on? I am 21 years old and just got out of a four-year relationship. The person that I was with made me feel lower than dirt and told me that I should have been proud that someone that like them even looked at me. Although through the entire relationship I was the one always working and giving and never receiving anything in return (although I really never wanted anything because my grandmother taught me to be very independent), anyways I believed for the four years that we were together that I was hidious and now I still do. Even broken up I feel like there is nothing it is that I can do to make myself feel better. I want to be able to heal and make things better for me because I know that leaving was the best thing for me to do, but I am scared because I feel like a child and that I am not ready to be me. I am West Indian and within that my mother's family is also Latin and I when I hear ignorant people (either of that race or of other races I feel like seriously what planet are you from that you are just so closed minded?) It's people like you that make people like me feel the way it is that I do and a lot of times worse. Like the saying goes, "If you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all," because you wouldn't like it if somebody says something bad about you. Trust me you would want people to respect you for whom you are. To all my sisters out there (no matter what race you are we are all sisters and family) don't let anyone put you down and make you feel empty, they are trying to find ways to make themselves feel better for whatever it is that they are lacking (they can't put their fingers on it but think they can point out your flaws.) Love you all!!!

yea this is true for me. hi tyra im a pluse size 18 year old female. many people judge just how you look. when i was in grammer school i was teased for being big, kids made fun of me and i neaver cried but i was so hurt by the things they said. i tried and tried to loss wieght. i really want to get healthy but i just dont know why my body wont let me. i dont feel beautiful at all! now that im older im worried that i will die before i get to see a grandkid. and that scares me.when i go to a amusment park i dont like to go on rides beacuse im scared i wont fit. my mother supports me and tries to help me loose weight. but my father laughs at me and makes fun of me for being fat. and that makes my cry cuz that is my father and he should'nt say things like that. im so insecure of my weight i hate shopping. tyra you know how it feels being fat from when you put on the "fat suite". i just need some support from other plus size people so please if anyone that reads this and releats to this or have any tips to loose weight please email me at southpsweetie08@aol.com
thank you tyra and anyone eles that reads this that means your interested in my story

Hi Tyra My name is Olga. Iam 15 years old and I was watching the show about race and it hurt me so much that i wanted to cry. I have two good friends of mine that go out with a differnt race and their parents dont accept it. They have to sneak around. I feel so bad for them. I wish there is something i could do. And when that white lady said that is a ghetto booty i think that was mean. And she did not have a booty the white lady so i dont know who lied to her and it isent nice to judge people. But What goes around comes around. This world is crazy. It hurts me when i hear about races people. I hurt for others. I wish there is something i could do to change their oppions. And i think race doesnt matter as long at they are good to you have a good future ahead of them it shouldnt matter the color of the skin. And for the races people out there you need to understand these humans didnt decide to be that color God decided this. So get that threw your big head. Your imature and color doesnt matter so grow up. But yes this is what it think about this suition.

Hey Tyra!
I watched your show about the different races and what they think about booty's. I am a white female with a larger booty for a white girl. It's been hard for me to be excepted by my own race and the black race. I date a black male that I love so much and wouldn't change it. I never really felt like white guys liked me because of the size of my booty and that I was more excepted by black males. Who I don't feel excepted by is black females. A lot of them don't like me because I date a black male and because I have a booty and some of them don't. In high school I had so many black girls say things about me because of it. My boyfriend loves it! When we go somewhere guys will look at my butt and my boyfriend laughs about it. He likes it knowing that I'm his and other guys look at my booty! The first time I meet my boyfriend's grandma she really didn't say much to me then I got up to take a picture with my boyfriend and she saw my booty and said "oh you got one with a booty" and from then I felt more excepted from her but also embarrassed. So I think no matter what race you are you still are going to be judge but someone even if it is your own race.

tyra,
i was watching "Tyra in Two" on your website when i found this episode and i had to comment on it. i could totally relate to the asian woman about her body: i am also considered fat if i go to China, but i'm considered normal, and sometimes skinny here in the U.S.

Dear Tyra,
I think that beauty comes in every shape size and color.I come from a big family and by that I mean big in weight size too! But if god wanted us to be the same way he would have made us that way. If he wanted us to all look-alike he would have did that also, but he didn't, that means love us the way we are. As for myself I'm 25 yrs. old and I weight 212 lbs. I have an unusually shape. I'm big at the top and small at the bottom and guess what you would never be able to tell that I have 5 kids. yes 5. but thatgoes toshow youo get love no matter what. Yes I'm amrried also. 5 years now.

Hello Tyra, it was an honest pleasure watching your show today. It amazed me to see how african-american and cocasion people act towards others, over their weight, style, and of course their "booties." Tyra, i think i aswell as you think that this is not right, the critisizm the people put on those that they see as opposite to themselves, is the most ignorant thing i have seen. People from different races should not criticize anyone at all. Also to see others speak about the colour relationship people have with others was incredible, to say that an african-american man with a white woman felt like he was going to hurt her was unbelievable. Most african-american men these days are the ones getting the most education in the world. I was very dissapointed to see these things on your show, they made me think very much. I am a latina and i understand what others go through, many people are scared of me though i have a good education and a good ennglish vocab. I am pleased with the person that you are Tyra, and i do look up to you for the effort you put in to make those people see what they are wrong in.

Tyra hey U,
1st off let me start off by saying that I am a well dressed, well mannered, clean cut, good smelling black male from the innercity and I love a woman with meat on her bones no matter the race. My motto is it gotta wiggle when I hit it ya dig. You did a show where you had 4 woman from diffrent backgrounds judge bootys. 1st why didn't you get men to judge, and 2nd the women that you picked were space cadets. What people must understand is that there are diffrent classes of booty. For example you have a tail, Jenifer Lopez has a butt, Sarena has a booty, Delisish from Flavor of love has a jungle butt so forth and so on. I'm don't think it's fair how media puts no curve women on a throne. Your average woman has curves and a booty. I loved it when you had those healty women on Top model and when you have them on your show. If in the near future you do have a show where men judge bootys or when men discuss how they feel about women I would gladly be a guest and I know that I will be the guess on that show that everybody will remember.

Hello. I'm a 30-yr-young Black female who saw your episode about what different races consider attractive. I must applaud you for discussing an important subject but I was very dissapointed with the women on the panel.
For example the White and Black females were so ignorant it was sickening! How dare that Black woman talk about Asians dying their hair when her head was full of that Korean weave, wig whatever the hell it was. And you would not even let the blond Asian lady finish her comment cuz u knew where it was going! Besides doesnt she know that hair dyeing is just a cosmetic thing for most people not a form of self-hatred or being a wannabe. If that was the case then 60% of Black women hate their weave-wearing, relaxing, fried-dyed and laid to the side selves! (including YOU TYRA)!!!
Then the White lady had the nerve to comment on size and kept saying Paris Hilton is the epitome of beauty (with her bleached blond grasshopper-looking self) The Asian lady hardly said anything, and the Latina women could not even scratch the surface of the issues they face( besides last time I checked Latina/o was not a race. It's an ethnicity. They can be of any race and there are over 100 terms to describe each "race" and the possible combinations of them) That could have been a show in itself.
Since you want to focus on race maybe next time you could do some fieldwork and get some statistics what different cultures really consider beautiful. Have some concrete evidence. Compare beauty pageant contestants, magazine covers something. And have some more tactful people on your panel not a bunch of phonies.

tyra,
yes deffinatly! i think different cultures percive certain body types and features very differently. The only beauty that i think is universal to all cultures is the beauty with in. But as far as minorities appreciating curves more, or fuller lips, or even darker skin....not everyone feels that's beautiful...unfourtunatly.

Hi Tyra,
After many conversations with my family, it's sad that discrimination and prejudice exists in all cultures and all nationalities. There will always be a group of people that feel they are better than the other. I can't tell you how much this sickens me. I think we're all beautiful, that every ethnic group has individual features that makes them, well, them. One more thing you should know about, I don't know if you've ever had to go to an immigration department, but it is a horrible, messy system. Talk about treating you according to your appearance, that's exactly how it is. The prettier you are and the better english you speak, the better you'll be treated. Some buildings even have their own jail cells right next door! I've never gone into one, but I've always wanted to. I'd like to see how they're treated inside. If you ever want to check out how people are treated in terms of where they are from, I'd advise you to become educated on this country's immigration departments. Girl, we NEED to talk about this!
Thanks Tyra

Dear Tyra,
to me it dose not matter the wieght the race or the height if you are beautiful you are beautiful if you are on the heavy side then just say to your self that you are just more cushion for the pushing if you are thick and blac tell your self you are the three b's big black and beautiful if you are white or any race and thick just think of your self as THICK MADAMES hey go to africa they think the bigger the better now if you are skinny and you are happy with the weight you are at that is okay if you good at that size 2 then great if you are good at that size 22 then good for you in case you dont know this is coming from a 12 year old girl {tyra is you are reading this i got that last comment about size 2 and 22 from your show when the lady from grays anotomy on your show i record all you show and made my own tyra show series that is how much i adore you

Dear Tyra,
I've been watching your show since it started and I have never seen a show so heart filled and honest. I'm very intrigued by the majority of your topics and I'm eager to watch your show every chance I get.
The episode that caught my eye the most was the makeover shows. Specifically the one about being over-weight. Well, I'm not really badly over weight, but I feel disgusting to even walk around without baggy clothes and sweaters or something to cover it. I'm only 16 and I have always been beaten down with comments from classmates and people in general about my appearance.
I've been trying to lose weight but struggle with every second of it. I try and exercise and eat properly, and that's not the problem, it's more so that I can't see the results and it hurts a lot to know that I can't change. I guess it also doesn't help that I'm on two types of birth control for my acne problem. I believe being on the birth controls is keeping the weight from leaving. And it's embarrassing to feel and look like I do. I just really really want to know what help and advice you can give me considering you've struggled with this yourself and now you look absolutely amazing!
Please help me gain my self-esteem and confidence back!
Thank Tyra!

Hi Tyra:
Well first of all I want to tell you that I am 16 and Im a Mexican-American, a Chicana and well when I was younger I didn't really care about my bodyweight nor any of that stuff because as a Mexican, we are thought that we shouldn't care about what people say about us nor we should care about what people think...well atleast that is in my family, but i think that most chicano folks think that way to because when have you actually seen Chicano folks running and excercising! But like i was saying, when I entered Middle school kids were just on me, making fun at my looks and all. I couldn't handle it. I was heart broken and didn't want to go to school. But after going to my house crying my dad would tell me that they are just kids that I really shouldn't even listen to because they don't make my life. But still I had that feeling that they wouldn't accept me...but well i tried to ignore them and with the help of my friends i moved on... but now Im kind of in the same problem about my weight and i don't know what to do.I worry that because of my looks my boyfriend will not like me anymore and leave me for someone skinnier or even prettier. Im scared...I don't know what to do?How can i accept myself again?
TYRA PLEASE HELP ME!

hey tyra i am a little younger than you well i am 11 i watch your show because it inspires me that maybe one day i can help people the way you do!!! i have tons of comments about you . you are pretty and the clothes you where are perfectly fine the way they are.
i have some words of edfice for the family that had hatered in the're life. i don't care if yyou repeat what i say because it is not my words it is the fact that god speaks and god says. we all know that he made adam and eve but that does not mean that if you are gay god won't love you because god loves everyone not just straight people. and if you ever meet them again please tell them that i pray for them to relise that gay people or lesbians are perfectly fine. i don't care if some one is gay or lesbian because they are still gods children so i will love them like he loves me.
it does not matter that they are gay it matters what they are in the inside if they are kind, or nice, or caring, not if they are gay. so i think that the mom is making her children say that they hate gay people.. i just feel that they keep saying that people are going to go to hell for being gay well maybe they are going to go to hell for keep saying that god hates gay because god does not hate any one.!
tyra i love your show and i think you run your show very well i tink that someday that family will get a message from god saying that he hates nobody.
and tyra if every body felt the way the felt the world would be full of hate!!!!
tyra i love your show and one day wish to meet you and be like you in a way that i am helping people !!!

Hello Tyra
I finally had the time to sit and enjoy your show due to being over welmed in school but now summer is here! When I saw the episode were there were individuals on stage (Christains) that claimed that everyone in 9/11 who lost their lives were fags or perverts!! I broke down and cried. I try every day to promote diversity, Anti-racism, Anti-Prejudice and exceptist of all and hering that if you don't believe in a certain religon mainly Christain that you will go to hell. BREAKS MY HEART!! I DON"T SEE COLOR! I DON'T SEE RACE! I DON'T SEE ETHNICITY! I DON'T SEE SEXUALITY! I DON'T SEE RELIGON! I SEE PEOPLE'S HEARTS AND WHO THEY ARE! I am crying as I write this because I protest against those who hurt and committ hate crimes by being diverse and by opening the minds of others around me. And my dream as I get older to expand diversity so that others can except everyone just as I do. I would love to share more there is so much that I am passionate about Anti-racism and promotion of diversity. So let me know if you get this!! You are great!

Ok so I know that some people may think that this is stupid but you know as a five foot three 103 lb. I get offended when people talk about weight issues. It just seems like noone in America is happy with anyones size. When people are overweight they get all of these rude comments about their size and stupid jokes and all of that jazz. When people are skinny people make fun of them too and think automatically that the person has a eating disorder. It is horrible. America...well the American people are never going to be happy with the size of anyone. NO Matter how thin you are or how thick you are there is always going to be someone to try to bring you down. People just need to be happy with who they are on the inside and when people comment on your appearance just think...my appearance can be changed but you have bigger problems if it makes you feel good to put me down.

Tyra,
I was watching this episode and I thought that it was biased. When you had the "big butt" person, she was heavyset. Not all people with big butts are heavyset. It almost proves the stereotype that when you have a big butt, it means you're fat. You claim to have a big butt, and you're not overweight.
When you had the "curly hair" person, it was a person with frizzy curly hair, not curly hair that you would see on maybe a biracial person.
Even with the breasts, the person with big breasts had implants. Really, the show seemed rather incomplete because it didn't really have the correct people in my opinion.

Hi Tyra!
If I hadn't moved I would probably be considered really beautiful. Here it's a different story. I have darker skin, a different body shape and different hair. All my friends are skinny and blonde, I always get compared to them and of course I usually don't rank to high.
In todays world everyone dyes their hair, gets a couple botox injections here and there, and even goes under the knife to perfect their look. But what is perfection? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and so is perfection. People shouldn't go to such extremes to be "perfect". God made everyone how he saw fit, and that's what perfection is in my eyes!
PS: Tyra, I really respect and admire your show. I also respect and admire you. You show the truth, I applaude you on that.

Not if their big, skinny or in the middle. my cousin is black and chubby but she can sing her heart out.And Im in the middle and can only dance but can't sing. all Im saying is that there is notthing different bettween us all.The only thing is our character.

I am 12 years old and I saw the show on race and it made me sick how people can be so horribly mean to people. I don't look at peoples color when i look at them because everyone is the same but just different colors.
PS. I think that you are so gorgeous.. I watch your show three times a day and I love it. I love you Tyra!!!

Hey tyra,
I'm a 15 year old obese girl who goes to high school at West Lincoln High School. I watched that show and thought that some of the comments that the ladies made were very hurtful to some obese women, and skinny women. But I also think that if the situation was vise versa that they would feel diferent about what they had said and they would feel different if they were having these comments made about them.
P.S.-- I love to watch your show and don't wear those "Sexy" outfits that the woman on the show on the day of (8-1-07) because she is the only on who think they are sexy. But you are a very beautiful woman.

I honestly think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We're so worried anymore about a "standard" of beauty and living up to it; we have enough youth... what we really need is a fountain of smart. I think that as long as you look healthy and can find ways to make yourself flaunt the assets you have, and also be confident enough to outshine your flaws that you're one of the most beautiful people out there. I like to believe that it's the flaws and not the perfection that makes us beautiful anyway. We need to stop focusing on what makes us ugly compared to others, and start looking at what makes us beautiful instead.

Tyra,
I'm 16, but i have a little bit of extra weight on me...so i dont feel that pretty, but ive been loseing alot of weight and people are telling me im hot, but i dont believe them.
The other day me and my boyfriend was laying in bed talking and it got really quiet.
I looked up at him and he rubbed my face and said, "Your so beautiful".
I didnt know how to respond to that.
what can i do to see myself as others see me?

This was an interesting show. However, I question the accuracy involved when one woman speaks for an entire race. I think it would have been much more convincing, you had, in addition to the four (I think it was four?) women, statistics to back it up. "83% of white women agree with what __ is saying" etc.
Love,

Hi Trya,
I just wanted to let you know that, when I saw this episode, and it really pissed me off. I usually like your shows, but this one went over the top. If you were going to protray beauty in different cultures, I believe that you could of done an experiment, statistics, instead of having one person up there representing the whole race. I thought it was uncalled form and not diverse at all. This show was a contradiction to your "argument" of racial problems. I also don't feel that dividing people up on your show shows racial strength. It's unecessary. What point does that prove? Another thing, if your show was to further enhance racial understanding, it's not working for instance, STAR who posted up some racial comments about how blondes are perfect, and asians hate themselves, I think she's very ignorance, and she needs some racial 101. she can think of whatever the heck she wants to think, but posting it up publically, it just shows how lame she really is.
This is all, I guess. I'm hoping that such things as this won't happen again.

This was a really good show but you could have used more people of different races i think. As for me I love my body but sometimes the sexual comments i get from guys get on my nerves. So Im a mix of i think mostly eastern european countries and native american but many think im other races or nationalities and i have heard mostly hispanic to even being part black. I think it just has to do with how i look which i love how i look and would never change it. SO i got long dark brown almost black hair, im dark complected so i got a tan/olive kinda skin tone and in the summer i get pretty dark, i also got big hips and a big butt that people say is like a black girls butt, and well i'm only 4'11.I had people say racist things to me for they though i was mexican and i dont think i am.Like one time this cop ask me if i was mexican because i was short and had dark hair.this annoyed me so much. Yet thru all i go thru i just ignore it for i know who i am and i love my body. I dont see why some girls want to get implants or whatever to make their boobs bigger or their butt bigger or why they starve themselves to make them skinny.I also don't see why so many girls go to the tanning bed just to get darker. Are they trying to hide themselves or are they ashame of their skin color?
All I'm saying is with me being 16 and living in America i think i'm different then most girls for i actually love my body as i said before and im not going off on how much i hate it and how fat i look. And yeah i know im short but im proud to be short and i actually don't want to be taller.

this show was interesting.. i loved to hear the points of view from people. and i actually came across a pic of you tyra, that had been photoshopped to make you look "banba".
Banbas a japanese subculture that kind lost popularity but is still around and its kinda shocking at first but it grown on you and i just wanted to share the picture w/ you:

I saw this show a while ago and I've been thinking about the way some of the women approached the way the others looked. I must say that I definately disagree with the caucasion women you had on the show. I am white and some of the things she said you had to look like to be accepted in the white community were just wrong. I don't think that every woman has to resemble Paris Hilton to be "pretty". My cousin is African-american and she has this saying that she says to me sometimes: "...Don't worry, you're black where it counts." It's funny to me, because there's so much tension between what black vs. white believe you should look like, but she and I just joke around about it, because if it's taken too seriously, it causes major problems. I am glad you are daring enough to do the shows on the topics you choose. It's great and people need to see that. You're an amazing woman, Tyra. Thanks:]
Love, Vanessa.

Hey Tyra hun..
You know, I think that the definition of BEAUTY is different for everyone. I'm Asian-American so my perception of what's beautiful and not is totally different from my parents. For example, I prefer to keep my hair midlength but my mom insists on haing it as long as possible. She also thinks that the whiter your skin is (the purer and less blemished it is) the more beautiful you are. However, I like to have a healthy glow to my skin. It's just so different. Also, I know that in American culture, it's mostly the long leggy and busty types that's all the rage. Yea, there are others too but mainly the tall and busty types. I am petite, standing at a mini four foot eleven and a half inches. I'm happy with the way I am but it just proves my point. Sometimes, your race is a big factor of your physical appearance. How you choose to interpret that and connect it to BEAUTY is up to you. Bye now! Stay sweet hun..

Tyra,
I would just like to say that i love your show.I feel like you hit them hardcore topics. You topics right in the middle where it hurts, and i feel like people need 2 know wuts goin on in the world and the things that are kept hidden. I raced home to see your show the day when you was discussing race among little kids. When the kids went with that lady and looked at those pictures and asked them which one looked smarter, prettier, like a princess..... I felt like she was setting them up to say things about certain races. Meaning for example:She asked which one do u think is the princess?" she was holding a white girl with a pretty crown and a light reflecting off of her, and then showed a black a girl that was lookin off into sunset. Now im going 2 be very str8 forward. I am a black young lady. I am of jamaican and barbadian decent. and proud of it. I would have said that the white girl looked like a princess over the black girl, just because how they were portrayed. Now if you was 2 do this over with a different set of kids ( which i hope u really do) and have up the same exact pictures of people dressed the same an everything, i think it would be more accurate. The picture of the asisan vs. the white man, to see which one is the boss. The asain looked like a secreatary and the the white did indeed look like " The Boss." I just suggest that next tyme u have it be more accurate and fair.

Hey Tyra,
I am a 19 year old creole female. I was born and raised in Louisiana, the capital of racial mixtures, lol. I recently watched your focus on the race episode and I was amazed to see that you did not have any creole individuals on your show. I realize that it is probably difficult to have every racial mixture on your stage, but the creole race is one race that is never recognized. We are most often mistaken for everything but what we actually are. It would just be nice to have the world actually recognize our race. But Tyra you are doing a wonderful job with informing and uplifting individuals throughout our nation :)
God Bless,

when all of you girls talk about this show how it fustrates you maybe you should think about WHY tyra came up with this topic. we all know all women are beautiful. but i think she was trying to let others know about how some cultures prefer certain looks.
its called THE BEAUTY MYTH people!!
nd her point was that how cultures just prefer different looks.

No,I don't think that our cultures have nething to do with it.I'm white and I have a big bust small waist and big hips.So i don't think it has nething do to with our races. That white wasn't that cute so I don't know why she thoguht she was the star of the show.

Dear Tyra,
Im a 17 year old girl living in Auckland, New Zealand. I come from a polynesian background and from what I know, standards of 'beauty' DO change among different cultures. My father is Tongan and the dark Tongan people believe that bigger women are considered to be more desireable, beautiful and assumed to come from wealthy families. If I were to be a slim tongan woman, any Tongan bachelor would frown upon me as they would think that I came from a 'poor' family as I do not have the means to eat well. As shallow and back to front as this sounds in the western world, it cancels out my mother's background, which is Tahitian. Most women from Tahiti are long, lean and fair. So I guess you can see my dilemma. Being a half dark/half fair women has its tribulations. But I believe and think beauty reigns within. But how do we convince the world that???
I leave that up to you Tyra. You're the crusader of beauty within. We all love you

Hi,
For as long as I can remeber I have been the "black girl with the white girl body". I have been called this by many people, my peers, family , and boyfriend. My boyfriend calls me an oreo(Black on the outside and white on the inside). I think because of what people say I have been trying to put on weight to please them, but recently I realized that I am fine the way I am. I am healthy and happy.

All women are phenomenal and very unique. We are meant to be of different shapes, sizes, backgrounds and behaviors. When we learn to love ourselves we can share that love and happiness with others. Give compliments to women you do know and those you don’t.
Do you realize how uplifting it can be to get onto the elevator in the morning and have some woman you don’t know, compliment your shoes? When those doors open up, there is much more pep in your step and a smile has somehow drifted across your face.
How wonderful it is to know we can share this with someone else, and possibly make their day!!
So while we sit and pick ourselves apart for the things we do not like, let’s start learning how to love ourselves and one another, a little bit better!!

I didn't see this episode but, based on what I heard. It's sounds wrong what the white girl said representing her race. I feel she wants attention by saying those things about other cultures. I am upset at the white girl also talking about darker skinned women. That's terrible, pretty women come in all shades, shapes, and sizes, and it's terrible she has to think that way. I'm an African-American thirteen year old girl, and I got more since than her. Obviously she was raised in a broken home.

I feel that the white woman that was suposed to represent the white community as a whole, offended me. I have friends of every race, religion, and size and shape. Dont judge, embrace differences. She was obviously brought up in a VERY closed-minded and racist family. people like that create stereo-types. I am caucasian ( Polish Lithuanian and Scandinavian) wiht all of my Slavic heritage I have the very features that she was down-playing. It offends me severely to hear such rude, hateful, and ignorantly insulting things coming from someones mouth. If everyone looked the same, whta fun would this world be? Variety is the spice of life- if she doesnt like it, she should close her eyes and her mouth. her mother didnt teach her " If you dont have anything nice to say, Dont say anything at all.

Hey Tyra,
So pretty much I am a white woman with a big booty...and I love it. I do not think that the white woman that represented our race on this show knows anything...hello she was so critical and off mark in so many ways. She is the type of woman in any race that is a disgrace in my opinion...she was super judgemental and she was not the best looker herself so who was she to say all of those nasty remarks to all of the beautiful women on your show???? It is my opinion that all woman are beatiful in their own way and they do not have to be a certain size or shape. To be honest I think 99% of your beauty is in your attitude and the way you present yourself to the world. The white woman who was on your show was ugly to the core. Her outside was pretty but when you are that ugly to people you yourself must not be a happy person and that makes you ugly. Well I just thought that I would give you my two cents worth. Thanks and I LOVE THE SHOW:O)

Hi,
This is for Rebecca, if I was you I would worry less about what "B" is doing and worry about you "B" is a very nice looking women and she is not trying to be white it just would not work so dont make that assumption because when you do that you make you're self look bad. And why did you say the blacb women with the wide nose you did not have to say that you just wanted to talk about her nose shame on you because how big her nose is should not have matter. Lastly, you said something about hair weave you dont know anything about hair weave to say what you said no one wears white peoples hair in their had because it not much of it to go around and it doesn't go with the texture of black peoples hair in the 1st place so stay in your little place in the world and take it easy baby. All of you have a blessed life god bless.

My god people , Looks shouldn't matter. It shouldn't control the way you live. Sure there always will be people prettier than you but that can't stop you from living your life. Even pretty people turn less attractive, due to old age. You can see an old lady on the street and not know she was once pretty. If you don't like the way you look now, imagine how you fell 40years from now with out surgery. If looks is the only thing you have in life you really have nothing.

Tyra Baby,
I think all body types are beautiful skinny medium or large. The only thing that matter is if the person is healthy. Some people are born naturally skinny. Just as there are some people naturally large. Paris Hilton can be skinny all she wants doesn't mean we have to follow her. Paris is not our moms what she does with her life is her busy people should stop talking smack about her and live your own life the way your parents raised you.

hi tyra!
as a black teen, i do disagree with a lot of what the african american woman picked said. as far as the hair goes, she was totally not being realistic when she said that "we prefer to keep it real" when her hair i'm 99.99999% sure was fake. And I know good and well most of our community has some kind of weave whether it is sewn in, glued in, or in braids. Actually, I got more guys when I had braids with extensons than when I got them taken out. Also, the whole big butt thing, there is a large line between being curvacious and just plain being fat. A big butt is ok if it's worked out and stuff, but when it just is fat and flabby, no matter what she says it is unattractive.

hey tyra. i just want to say that I LOVE YOUR SHOW!! i manage to stay up every night just to watch it. on the show just the other day of how different races view eachother.... that summer girl made me mad with the comments she made about "the white community" im a part of that white community but 95% of my friends are black so to hear her comment bout some things she did really upset me because it made me feel like she was speaking for the white community as a whole and i DID NOT like the way she represented me as a white person. besides no one is perfect and if she doesnt like the way people look then she dont have to look at them. her comments as a whole were just rude and disrespectable i think. but its a brave topic to talk about because most people wont really touch that. but i just had to let that out. u are a HUGE inspiration to me and what i do in life because u just seem so down to earth and REAL. and i respect that very much. so u keep doin ur thang girl and ill keep watchin ur show every chance i get

Hey Tyra
As an Asian girl I was amazed you found a curvy Asian to represent us.Since the majority of Asian are skinny male or female. I used to live in China and Vietnam and I hardly ever saw an Asian who isn't skinny and if they were the must have been from some other country. Now that i have came to live here for 10 years now. The Asians in my neighbor hood is still skinny. My point is most Asian prefer skinny people. Its seem cruel but it works out some how. Most Asian guy when the y built muscles its more compact. So no matter what they do there still skinny. If you look up all the hot Asian celebrity they are all skinny. No skinny guy would want to go out with a girl bigger them them. Its like how the guy is usually taller than the women well the women should not be fatter than the guy.

Hey sexy Tyra.
As a black women I would like to say dam we like the curves and the booty but too much is gross. After a certain point it is no longer sexy curves but just fat. There nasty fat. I like curves but I am not for obesity. The women you had representing us she is fat and not in the good way. Beyonce has curves in the sexy way and thats is what people like not over weight obesity people.

Hey girl. ^_-
Although i agree on some not all of the things the 4 representatives said, but it is the way they said it thats wrong. It feels like they are attacking the other types of people to make them fell better about them selves. There should be a poll of hundreds of people on what is hot and not instead of one person representing a race. Cause it seems like some of these people want to kick Summers ass. Summer may have been rude but I hope people aren't giving her a hard time after this show.

tyra,
I love your show adn i watch you religiously every weekday. I recently watched your show on Beauty Across Cultures. I am a lgiht skinned size 22 hispanic female who gets lots of love from everyone around me male and female and when i heard what these women were saying i was appauled. But nothing got to me more that Elizabeth commenting on the color of the puertrican girl and the light skined latina!!!! She said that most guys would prefer the lgiht skined latina to the other girl because guys would consider the dark skined girl to be "negra". I totally disagree with what she adn a few of your audience members had to say about that. I don't know where they are from but in my experience in living in ca, nj, pa, ga, fl, tx the guys there preferred their latina women to look latina. Light skinned girls didn't get as much attention because it is harder to tell whether or not they were latina or not.

I am an 18 year old white woman who happens to be a ballerina. I feel ashamed to have had that white red neck represent my race. She was SO inconsiderate! i could barely watch her...her comments were repulsive. I am very thin and i get accused of having anorexia all the time....im not anorexic!!! just because i am a ballet dancer doesnt automatically make me have an eating disorder! tyra, you should seriously do a show about ballerinas and the steriotypes made about us. its terrible.

Those 4 women had their own opinions on how beauty is and should not have been said to represent their race. I know not everyone tries to be like Paris Hilton, and that beauty is seen differently around the world because of cultures, but the show didn't quite show that in a good taste. The separation of the races in the audience didn't make me too excited either.

Tyra thinks one person can represent the whole race.
Tyra wants us to be stereotypical.
Tyra purposely picked out dramatic representatives to add more intesified dramas in her show, which would supposedly captivate our attention.
Tyra lacks realistic sympathy, all of her sympathy are bull.
Tyra just made over 50% of the viewers feel insecure of their body and unaccepted in their community and race.
Tyra should just quit hershow.
Tyra oh tyra.

Hey tyra! just for the record it is totally NOT your fault if people feel offended with the things that have been said, with that said i just wanted to clear something out..just because someone is "full figured" or "thick" does not mean they have curves, those are jelly rolls not curves, if you truley see a skinny woman, we have curves and i am sick of over weight women saying how skinny women are shaped like a boy or uncurvey when in reality we have just as much curves as the next woman. Also, just because we are a size 0,1,2, or 3 does not mean we are anerexic, and if we have breast that are not an A cup and we are skinny does not mean we have implants..i would also like to say that there is nothing wrong with women that have implants..P.S: Love you tyra! i watch your show everyday..and i wasnt trying to tell you off, that is for all the ignorant people out there talking bad about skinny people..skinny women are beautiful.

I thought this episode was entertaining. While I do agree that Summer was a poor choice for representing the caucasian community, there is no possible way to find someone that will satisfy everyones opinion. Everyone has different opinions and there is no perfect person out there. I dont agree with Summer's views but they are hers and whether you like it or not, she is a member of the caucasian community.

The show about races, body & hair acceptance was interesting (as well as most of your shows) However, the panel of women should have been 2 or 3 women representing the 4 races present. 1 woman can't represent the viewpoint of her entire race I'm considered 'Black' though 2 of my grandparents are 100% native american, 1 is creole and 1 is black. But for all practical purposes, I look and call myself 'black'. The black woman on your panel wore an obvious wig and kept saying,"I gotta keep it real" The white woman also didn't seem to voice the majority of 'white women's opinion. could you have another show such as that one with more open minds? I think I'm black but don't share many of their steriotypical opinions. PS, I think you are great!!

I just finished watching this episode, and I am really disappointed by the comments I heard from all races. I am a Caucasian woman who never felt fully comfortable with the standards of beauty for my race. I have a tiny waist and a large booty. For Summer to say that my body type is not beautiful was expected, but when Elizabeth made the derogatory comment that a white woman with a large booty looks unnatural, it really bothered me. Not only did your show solidify the fact that I do not fit into my own community, it also showed that I am not accepted by other communities.

The show wasn't about what those particular women on the panel thought about other women, it was about them representing whole races, and speaking for us all. There will always be fat, tall, short, stubby, skinny, too skinny people on the earth why not just give eachother a break. I dont think any of the girls being judged valued those womens opinions. And they looked so hurt. I love tyra no matter what.

I thought that this was a really good show and I personally was glad the topic was put out that. It is very true that people of different cultures look at body types different. I personally think that culture body types are in direct relation to our ancestry. Also as a black female I love being thick and I love my true shape. I rather have curves and I weigh more than I actually look. I look at some races and the women way less then me and they look huge and miserable! Thanks Tyra for the show!

I feel that tyra doesnt owe anyone a n apology. she honestly answered what people want to know, What do others think of me. Why should tyra be blamed for telling the harsh truth. this show should actually help our society to reveal thoughts that many people disagree with but it's okay. If you have low self esteem you shouid see that many people disagree with mean comments. You are who you are.Who to tell what beauty looks like. i say that its all creations.

I know now that this is actually what some people think. If you have low self esteem this show will show the ignorance that people have and that people hinestly do disagree.

Hey "Cam"
You do realize that since Tyra Banks produces her own show that she IS responsible for what is aired on it, and not just the "good" shows. Tyra wanted people to be honest but they just came off and ignorant and petty. Do you even see a statement from her or her writers apalogizing to the those who were offended? NO an youprobably won't.

I think the show was fine. All of you are to fast to say that it is Tyra fault and it really is not it is the fault of the young ladies that set on the panel. So dont worry so much on hating on Tyra because she did not tell them to think or act that way they are a product of society so get over it real fast.

By scrolling through the other comments posted on this site, I think it goes without saying that most people were not only disappointed by this show but were severely offended by the panel and the entire structure of this show. I dvr'd this episode b/c i thought it would be interesting to see. But within 5 minutes of watching it, it was clear to me that it was just trash among many other daytime talk shows. Your panel was ignorant, and clearly represented their own opinions and not their races opinions at all. Your selection of races (FOUR???) DOES NOT not represent the true American population(we won't even get into how you decided to condense the many different cultures into these four "races" asian, latino, white, and black).Instead of showing plenty of whites, several latinos and a couple of black people, you could have shown more than what was just represented by your idiotic panel. And why is it that that terrible Summer got most of the panel air time even though she most likely humiliated the entire white audience with her destructive/close mindeD view(isn't it clear that she is the one with the issues)? Where the hell did you get her from!??
I do watch ANTM, and I must say that there is a broad range of cultures addressing racial/beauty issues on this show than this stupid episode that you held on your talk show. I am amazed that your network did not pull the plug on this before they aired this bimbotic depiction of "Beauty Across Cultures". In my book, (and what seems to be anyone who watched this show) you failed miserably. I am horrified that you felt that this was an insightful show. I hope that you actually read these comments(or at least get briefed on it) and can take the proper measures to address this. Talk Soup is going to have a field day with this one.

Tyra, I thought that each and everyone of those girls were beautiful. I am white and I am around a variety of races through out my day. I have a cousin who is black/white and she has an ass! I am not just sayin' that either. She looks big but her tummy isnt the problem. Neither is her big booty. She is beautiful and she can do a booty call if you know what I mean. What my big mouth is sayin' is that it dont matter what race or color or body type you are... you are gorgeous and if you dont think so God does!!! He made you!!

I was upset about the asian girl who changed her color. She wanted to be separated from FOBs (fresh off the boat)? She should know then that FOBs dye their hair more and not because they want to fit in with whites. Why did they have to make it a race thing? I don't know a single asian person that has never dyed their hair. They don't think "hey i want to fit in and not be asian"

I was really embarrassed for Summer. Not sure where you found her but she is NOT representative of white females in the US. I would have loved to see a professional woman in her spot who had a LOT more class. She kept bringing up Paris Hilton. If she is her idol then I think my questions are answered. Anyone who looks up to Paris Hilton has zero class.

Wow, who picked the bitchy white girl to be our race's spokesperson? No wonder people of color think that white people are all superficial and elitist. She was awful. And she must have had some serious issues and really low self-esteem to be she was. I think that little skinny girl looked abnormal... and most of my friends would think the same - that she looked ill or malnourished. That is not pretty to me, and that is not normal. Now in white society, I will have to agree that white men can be a bit more superficial, and do seem to prefer the thinner, blonde-haired, big-boobed girl, but from my experience, that girl most is more of a "trophy" than a relationship-type. My male friends tell me that when they want a "real," long-term and meaningful relationship, they prefer a woman with more curves, and are often surprised to find that someone they would normally think of as "fat" (size 10 or above) is someone they find attractive, once they see her in person. I will also have to agree that typically Latino men and black men pay me more attention because I am plus-sized. Good show, but a bit over-the-top... and not really representative of every race... I didn't see any middle-eastern or indian women on stage. And I believe there should have been men included in the panel as well.

SCRIPTED AND FAKE!People said that one of the asian girls said that was judging the women ,that it was totally fake but fun to watch. They also said that you were not the way they thought you were.It was very dissapointing.

Tyra,
This was the first episode I've watched of your show and it was very eye opening. The only part that really jumped at me was that you didn't have anyone who represented people from the Middle East, India and the subcontinent. While its true that you had an Asian woman on the show, she does not represent much of Asia. People who are brown have different viewpoints compared to those of Japan, China and the like. Also i found it absolutely disgusting that you chose Summer to represent Caucasians! Next time when you do a show about race, don't just include the Latina/Hispanic,Caucasian ,African American and Asian; because truth be told, there are at least a million brown people that need to be represented too!

I cant watch the "focus on race" episodes. it seem to me that who ever picks the panel to give their opinions, they try and find the most stereotypical and even racist people. as a white girl i do not want to be "Paris Hilton" like. i in fact am proud of my butt and being 5'4" and 135 lb. i am by no means "fat" or "bony". so next time you find people to give their opinion make it a group of each race. i don't want to a scrawny blond racist (in my could be wrong opinion) to speak for me.

Hi Everyone,
I was sooooo upset by this show. Just the fact that the show had 1 person from each culture speaking for the whole race is ridiculous. I am a white female in Canada and i do not think AT ALL like summer and neither does any of my friends, it seems like the tyra show picked the most extreme nut out there to speak for the whole population which isnt fair. Also having the woman speak for the male population isnt fair either, how do they really know what men want, and just like the rest of us, every male is different and has a different opinion on what they think is beautiful. This show should have never aired, every time i think about it, it makes me mad. Also if the tyra show really wanted to make a difference they whouldnt have seperated the audience into races!
Tyra i luv your show but you messed up this one pretty bad.

Dear Tyra,
I caught this show and I was disappointed. I am 18 years old white female and I have a big butt. I was shocked with what Summer had to say. She mad me really mad. I wish I would have checked your website so I could be on the show. I am overweight and have a thick end but I’m happy with myself most of the time. However, Summer I believe stated that “Were looking for brothers.” (And I apologize if this is not correct) But Summer was not “representing” the real truth about the White community. I may be big but don’t make false statements. Also, if Summer and the other guests were behind the curtain I feel they would have a different look on body types. Because if they were behind the curtain I think

Posted by: Kate | October 5, 2007 1:20 PM

Do you think weight and physical features make a difference when it comes to defining beauty across cultures?
yea this is true for me. hi tyra im a pluse size 18 year old female. many people judge just how you look. when i was in grammer school i was teased for being big, kids made fun of me and i neaver cried but i was so hurt by the things they said. i tried and tried to loss wieght. i really want to get healthy but i just dont know why my body wont let me. i dont feel beautiful at all! now that im older im worried that i will die before i get to see a grandkid. and that scares me.when i go to a amusment park i dont like to go on rides beacuse im scared i wont fit. my mother supports me and tries to help me loose weight. but my father laughs at me and makes fun of me for being fat. and that makes my cry cuz that is my father and he should'nt say things like that. im so insecure of my weight i hate shopping. tyra you know how it feels being fat from when you put on the "fat suite". i just need some support from other plus size people so please if anyone that reads this and releats to this or have any tips to loose weight please email me at southpsweetie08@aol.com
thank you tyra and anyone eles that reads this that means your interested in my story

Posted by: Kristine | August 23, 2007 12:35 PM
Dear Tyra,
I think that beauty comes in every shape size and color.I come from a big family and by that I mean big in weight size too!

Well I believe every women is made unique and diverse. I may be fourteen but I know that no one is better than anyone. We should be happy and let no one descirminate against us, because Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder...

Tyra,
I was watching this episode and I thought that it was biased.

We are all created beautiful. God never made ugly people. He created us in His own image so i don't believe that there are ugly people.
Posted by: Christine | August 2, 2007 7:44 PM

Tyra, I love your show and how it inpowers people. But I think that people think that you can only be racist against black people but if you are part of a race you can be racist against another race. I love you Tyra!!!!

HI,Tyrai watched this race show and i did not like it at all.Im 12 years and i know that people should like people the way are they not if there black or white.

Posted by: Meagan | August 1, 2007 1:15 PM

Love,

I actually meant to say RICA....not STAR...

Hi Trya,
I just wanted to let you know that, when I saw this episode, and it really pissed me off.

Hey Tyra:]

God Bless,
Kimberly

why was it that the lady in the blue shirt kept mentioning how "beautiful" paris hilton is? i dont think she is a positive role model for young girls... we shouldn't want to be like her...but thats my opinion.
Posted by: vanessa | July 1, 2007 7:45 PM
when all of you girls talk about this show how it fustrates you maybe you should think about WHY tyra came up with this topic. we all know all women are beautiful. but i think she was trying to let others know about how some cultures prefer certain looks.
its called THE BEAUTY MYTH people!!
nd her point was that how cultures just prefer different looks.
Posted by: nguyen | June 28, 2007 10:20 PM

Posted by: Ashley M | June 8, 2007 4:25 PM
Those 4 women had their own opinions on how beauty is and should not have been said to represent their race. I know not everyone tries to be like Paris Hilton, and that beauty is seen differently around the world because of cultures, but the show didn't quite show that in a good taste. The separation of the races in the audience didn't make me too excited either.
Posted by: Lily | June 8, 2007 11:10 AM

Okay just to clear it up when she was talking about Jessica, it wasn't Jessica Alba-it was Jessica Biel. And Jessica Biel is white...

Being a 1,2,3... Iz NORMAl.
Just because we ARE tiny DOES NOT mean we do drugs, maybe you should start though.

On this show all tyra was doing was showing the truth , so why should she apologize for things that people think. if you dont want to hear it turn but it is something, that i feel everyone should hear. the truth is ugly, not the viewers.Dont be mad at tyra but the opressor.

Posted by: kat | June 6, 2007 12:30 PM

You are really making me mad. First of all you are wrong about Jessica Alba being white, and you think you are an expert on everything but you are not. Also you show is so
SCRIPTED AND FAKE!People said that one of the asian girls said that was judging the women ,that it was totally fake but fun to watch. They also said that you were not the way they thought you were.It was very dissapointing.
what up with you tyra?? You really missed the point and the episode??
??????

Tyra,
This was the first episode I've watched of your show and it was very eye opening.
Posted by: Rammya | June 5, 2007 11:59 AM
I cant watch the "focus on race" episodes. it seem to me that who ever picks the panel to give their opinions, they try and find the most stereotypical and even racist people. as a white girl i do not want to be "Paris Hilton" like. i in fact am proud of my butt and being 5'4" and 135 lb. i am by no means "fat" or "bony". so next time you find people to give their opinion make it a group of each race. i don't want to a scrawny blond racist (in my could be wrong opinion) to speak for me.
Posted by: Kelly | June 5, 2007 10:34 AM
