Audition Safety
BEWARE! There are many unscrupulous companies trying to take advantage of actors. Don’t believe it if it’s...too good to be true. For those struggling to get a break, the chance to be seen by casting agents, to work with directors, to be spotted by managers and agents is everything.
There are certainly many legit companies that offer a chance to meet and read for casting agents and directors in a classroom setting; but be aware that if any fee is charged for these sessions, your participation may be in violation of SAG Rule 11 or California Labor Laws.
Other ways to stay safe during an audition or casting call:
- Take a friend along to auditions
- Never disrobe at an audition
- Never try out at a private residence
If you have any questions regarding the legitimacy of workshops or auditions, contact your local SAG branch at 323.549.6809

Hi Tara- I live -breathe and strut (MODEL)- i am very excited that people mistaken me as a model- however- All of the sites i look over involve 1,000 of dollars to get started-
i am from a single family home and my mom will do whatever it takes to make my dreams come true- However, i dont want anyone to take advantage of her? JC offered us a shot- but he is asking for 2500.00 for a class- Is that legit? The director says I was the best he has seen- So why are we having to pay?
Please make my dreams come true- I am 15 years old 5'10 and READY for the Runway! HELP- Before we go broke- WE LOVE YOU TARA and value your opinion- You are the perfect role model! XOXOXOXOX

dearest Tyra
this most likie will never reach you,, but it's nice to think that it might. I feel hopeless, and sometimes i feel i just really am because i try and i try and lately i just feel like giving up. sounds stupid anyways, last night this man named steve, from explorer talent.com. he tells he that he and the rest of his casting buddies are interested in me and that i'm gonna be a big star. he complaments my ear of and even calls me baby? I think he's being nice, but i guess you can't trust anyone in this world anymore. because my dumbass gave him my visa num and now i have 10 dollars in my account cause he took 200 out of it. for a stupid pro profile, wtf! tyra, i have no one to talk to other then my boyfriend, he's been everything.
the next morning josh and i go to the bank to change my debit card.
that steve guy charged my account anyways....f%$#er but its my fault i new how much it would be.
i should have said "sorry sir i can't afford that right now, or , ... no way....a@@hole. lol
anyways i fixed the account in the morning and then called steve. only steve wasn't there, of cours.
my boyfriend said he was my manager and that he would get him in big trouble...
i finally got ahold of steve after i got off of work, when i told him i talk to him. things went so quickly, like the night before when steve first called.
i said that the account was a mistake, and that i believed it was fraud. it was, 200 dollars right of the spot, and any additional fees added if nessecary, oh for a year, bty. ya, and this guy steve hand me all these chances of auditions. whatever.
anyways steve doesn't even fix anything, lets just say he's a dush and that he sends me to a recording. i have to then call another num. (this lady who called me earlier by the name of debbie, says she'll fix the account) ya right. crossing fingers.
i just can't believe i did that, and that someone did that to me. i actully believed that i could make it, i mean if i was handed a great oppurtunity, i'd give it a 110% so my mom doesn't have to suffer anymore, so i don't have to hate life anymore.
i just hope this is tyra and not steve because then i'd be screwed right, Please God I hope this makes it to you.

Tyra and Staff,
I'm not sure if you've heard of a company call Be., aka gonnabe.com, aka My Artist's Place. They are a BIG SCAM and need to be exposed. I know first hand from spending over a year working with them at events where they would "Scout" for talent and call everyone in for a "screen test" only to sell them "memberships" and classes of all sorts. They're "talent directors" are actually all sales people, many of whom lie about they're experience and backgrounds to impress naive parents and children who have big hopes. The company works on a system based purely on numbers and how many memberships they sell a week. Their "talent directors" receive commissions off of each sale and the "members" are asked to pay to audition for work in addition to having already paid thousands of dollars for membership! This company needs to be exposed. They are operating all over the state of California from San Diego to San Francisco and plan to spread nationwide in search of more people to con.

Hi Tyra
Im 16 years old and my one biggest dream is to be a model. I signed up for so many modeling companies, but they want me to buy my our photos and pay for whatever else. But on your show you said if they ask for money its a scam. So i turn them down. I even walked the runway when i got a call back...i was so good i was in the finals. Then they said i had to pay for a t-shirt and everything together came up to 250.00 dollars..they was very disappointed when i turned them down-cause i sai Tyra said i shouldnt have to pay for my pictures. LOL but anyway i really want to be a model!! Im a cometology student and i want to do hairshow(me as the model)

Is Dwight Agnor a scam or not?

Hey Tyra, I just turned 18 and I am trying everywhere asking anyone for work to be a Model or an Actress as I think I am to short to be a model!
Anyway a man wrote to me, he wants me to be in a fashion show in New York. I am from Scotland!
I said my Dad would have to come with me.
The company said they'd pay for my flights & my accomodation, food etc, but I'd need to pay $650 first, I'm not sure if I'd get this money back, the man doesnt sound american to me, and he gave me a Model Website, but I think its fake, I dont really get it.
It sounds fantastic...to good to be true?
How do you tell?

Hello tyra,
I was looking into doing some print work but i was a little weary with the agency because they do a screening process by web cam and they do ask u to disrobe, but not completely, is this normal, have you ever heard of anything like this?
Posted by: Brenee' | July 28, 2008 8:27 PM
hi tyra.
its marissa again. another question. as i told you before i am 14 and i am an inspiring teen model in chicago, and i havent made it into the industry yet. once again my parents dont want to pay an arm an a leg for photo shoots and other things model agencies try to corner them into.and they dont want a rip-off or unsafe agency. so my question is. how should i get a reputable source to get into the industry that is safe and not so costly.
thank you mike for the advice before.
i will keep trying.
thanks so much for your time,
marissa

Marissa you can Model without being in a Model Agency! It is a Myth that you somehow need to be with an agency, a Myth brought about by the very agencies that want to take your money lol!
I have known many to Model just by Self Promoting themselves and good networking with others, the key thing however is that you really need to be supported and guided by a Parent who can over-see your progression to do so. At the end of the day Marissa you need that Parent consent to continue with any such modeling Aims, at least until you are of such an age where you can persue your own directions in life.
I hope that made some sort of sense Marissa!
Good luck all that you do from
MIKE in UK!
