Tips from Warren Tricomi for Finding the Perfect Cut!

WarrenWhile the days may be getting longer, haircuts are getting shorter. As the cold weather creeps in, Warren Tricomi offers tips to heat things up with a glam new style. Edward Ticomi says this season we are going to see a rise in shorter haircuts. The length is just at the shoulder or shorter and the great thing about these cuts is the amount of styling versatility you have. That’s because it’s a lot easier to style your hair in different ways when you have less of it.

STEP ONE – MAKING THE CUT: There are really three cuts to choose from. The trick is to work with your stylist to figure out which one will complement your style best. It’s not about finding the perfect style for your hair or face type as all three of these are universally flattering if they are cut and styled correctly.

o Elegant Punk – This cut is defined by spiky layers throughout the entire head that are still long enough to style into delicate straight or curly styles.

o Classic Bob – Think simply short hair with bangs. Although bangs can be cut on the longer side so they can be swept away from time to time if desired, there is a trend towards very, very short “Louise Brooks-style” bangs this season.

o Twice Cut – This style requires the hair on top of the head to remain at chin or shoulder length while the hair underneath (around the nape of the neck) is cut very short. A cut like this is almost like two haircuts in one as it can look very long if you wear it down but also like a very short cut if it is curled or put up.

STEP TWO – CHOOSE YOUR STYLE: You can take any of these cuts and make them your own. The secret is knowing what products to use to get the perfect end result.

o Edgy – For a bit of a rock ‘n roll spirit, and to accentuate the short layers of these short cuts, I use Liquid Hold ($15), a quick-setting gel, when hair is still wet to start adding texture to the hair. Next, take a small amount of Hair Gum ($15) and work throughout the hair to add gloss and flexibility. Finally, after you blow dry (or air dry) use Paste ($15) to lock in the shape without creating stiffness.

o Straight and Narrow – Play it chic by blowing out any one of these cuts. I recommend starting with Blow Dry Serum ($15) before blow drying. This oil-free serum tames frizz, smoothes flyaways and leaves hair silky and soft. After blow drying, use the Finishing Cream ($15) to prevent any additional flyaways and guarantee a sleek end to your blow out. I also suggest slicking hair straight back after you blow it out for a very sexy, edgy evening out style. Then use Blue Gel ($17) to sculpt it into place and give it a long-lasting “wet” look.

o Structured Waves – To give your hair a bit of 1920s glamour and sophistication, curl your hair into a pattern reminiscent of screen sires like Josephine Baker. Begin by applying Hot Set ($17) to your hair, a lightweight, heat-activated setting spray that locks in shape instantly while repelling humidity. Next, use Warren Tricomi’s Thermal Rollers ($20) in either the small or medium size (the large ones will not give you the tight curl you want on short hair). After you take out the rollers, use the Spray Wax ($18) to trap the shape of the curl. Then use more Spray Wax to press the curls tightly to the head (the goal is not volume and bounce). Finally, use the Hairspray ($20) to keep it all in place.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE COLOR? Colorist Joel Warren says you may want to think about changing your hair color when you go dramatically shorter. Highlighted hair in particular might not look very good after you cut it short as the highlights were not meant for that cut. Because of this we are seeing a trend towards very monotone, very rich color this season that is free or almost completely free of any contrast or highlights. Think Jean Harlow blonde or Elizabeth Taylor brunette – very deep color but all one shade.

Hi Tyra!

As you already know from the hundreds of comments, School is here.
I'm a junior in high school, and I've always been known as the girls with no tooth, and pretty but plain. I have been trying to get a perfect hair-cut since 8th grade and every stylist I've gone to never gets it the way I want, EVEN THOUGH I bring pictures!!!

I've always wanted that edgy scene look, where is layered almost everywhere and it can stay messy and still look awesome.

Any tips on how I can find a hair-stylist who will give me what I want??

THANKS!!

~Lucie

hi Tyra,
I'm a 16 year old hispanic. School is almost starting and i want a new goth chic look. I'm tired of people calling me emo. I have tan skin and i want to impress everyone and show them that i can be beautiful. What should I wear and what color of makeup should i wear?

Please help

Hey Tyra,

School is starting and I really want a new look. I have the asian black straight hair and is 3in past my shoulders. My mom always cuts my hair straight and she doesn't want me to have "wild, messy" hairstyles. I'm not allowed to buy/use straighteners, etc. My plain hair makes my oval face look even plainer. Is there a way I can style my hair so that it looks cute and natural??

P.S. During the school year I have crosscountry practice before school, so my team has 30min to shower, eat breakfast, and get ready before heading off to class.

Please help me!!!

-Marina
