Sara's Fashion Blog Anyone can go to the mall and pick the same old clothing everyone else gets from the racks, but it takes time, talent and a true “fashionista” to find that one-of-a-kind item for a bargain that would blow you away.

There is one thing about me everyone knows and that is I will never show up to an event wearing the same thing as someone else because I don’t have to and neither do you. It is called thrifting, to some it is called secondhand shopping, to others bargain busting, but for me it is a hobby, talent and a way of life. If you don’t know what I am talking about I will let you in on my little secret. I am a thrifter, I go to secondhand shops, antique shops, thrift stores, swap meets and yes, even the occasional yard sale to find one-of-a kind items for less. Not only am I saving a bundle of cash, I am getting beautiful vintage items to add to my wardrobe (today’s fashion all starts with vintage), as well as outfits and prices to die for. I have a few secrets of the trade to share with you, and soon, you too can be a thrifty “fashionista.”

1. Wear clothing that makes it easy to slip other clothing over, many secondhand stores don’t have dressing rooms.
2. Inspect items thoroughly before purchasing. Some items may have holes, rips or stains.
3. Never rely on label sizes. Through the years, label sizes have changed -- especially vintage items. A size 8 from 20 years ago will be different from a size 8 today.
4. Expect imperfections, mainly on vintage items. Let’s not forget they have been pre-loved. However, if it has yellow underarms just walk away no matter how cute it is!

One woman’s junk is another woman’s treasure. Thrift shopping lets you keep up with the trends, while staying way within your budget. Some of the items you find will even still have the original tag on it, brand new! Even if you feel silly or embarrassed to shop at secondhand shops, just try it. Take a friend and have fun with it, trust me you will be surprised, especially when you look at the price tag. Who knows, maybe you too could become a thrifty “fashionista.” And once you feel that “Thrill of the Hunt” at a thrift store, there is no going back to those cookie cutter stores!

Let me end by saying, fishermen get fish, hunters get deer, stars get Oscars, and I, my friends, get bargains!!

Hello all of my fellow fashionista's, this is Sarah from "Sarah's blog" I just wanted to say thank you to all who commented on my segment and offer some advise for those of you who had questions, for those who are wondering where they can find thrift stores and other boutiques in your area just look in your local phone book under "thrift stores" or "consignment shops" they wiil usually have the name, address and telephone number, make a map for yourself and take a day to just shop around, you are sure to find something. The key to finding great items is to take your time and look at everything, be patient because alot of these places may look like a junk store but hidden treasures are always found sooner or later. Also check out some of the charity organizations, like the Goodwill, Salvation Army and any of your local charity drives for thrift stores. This way as you shop you will also be donating to a great cause, even more reason to shop! These tips should help all of you to become a "thrifty fashionista" like me!!!

Dear Tyra and Sara,

Your August 9, 2007 Princess of Cheap show had an outstanding idea. To extend this even further, why don't you assign Sara a crew to look in all the major cities and find all the stores that cheap girls like us can shop in?
There is a popular fashion magazine I subscribe to and love where the end of each issue is dedicated to a specific city. All the boutiques the editors at the magazine think are fierce are listed with short descriptions of what they sell and a map to find them easily if you happen to visit that city. Only thing is, they're way out of a budget-minded girls reach! Why can't someone make a "Princess of Cheap Shopping Guide to (Fill in the City)"? Or even a show featuring local cheap girls from different cities including us in on their favorite finds. I'd surely read/subscribe/watch that!

Keep me posted, I'd really like to see this happen.

Hi Sarah,

I was so impressed by you sense of fashion and would have loved to have the same skill.
I am a 22 year old girl, very thin. My mom often tells me that I need to gain weight so that I could look more my age and sophisticated. Since I don't have much money, I often go to thrift stores to buy clothes but I can never seem to find what i need. I would love to hear your advice on what kind of outfits would look best on me, and will go best with my complexion and size.

I was took back seeing such a special on the Tyra Show.
I thought I was the only fashion penny-pincher princess out here!
I'm not alone? Are other people agreeing that prices in regular department stores have gone to climb Mount Everest, and are never to come back? =P

Okay, here's my problem:
I'm 13 years old, 5 foot 9 inches tall, and have an 11 - 12 shoe size. I live a little outside the boston area, and I can't find anywhere to get a stylish shoe that fits, is stylish (casual, formal, active, all of them) and isn't too expensive.

Tyra, you looked nice at the beginning of the show untill you wore the pink dress MAYA chosed for you. Everything about that dress was odd. It was like you went from frying pan to fire. Give my love to your thrust worthy audience for being honest with you. They hated it like me.
America should understand you are now a woman and a role model to the world. Your show has become a family show. That is to say, parents and children watch your show without any second thought. Mark you, children learn by immitating. If you expose your bra in the name of being sexy, they will follow suit. I wiIi be more than disturbed to see your private parts while I am watching the show. For this and other reasons, please maintained your conservative dressing habits. I did not see any mistakes on all the outfits you had earlier. They were simple and nice.
My only concern is about your hair. Don't get me wrong honey, It really looks beautiful but please permit me to say this.
When you put on a turtle neck dress, blouses or shirts with collars, it is adviceable to wear your hair short or do a pony tail. This way, we will be able to see the complete beauty of your face and what you have on. when you wear your hair long on a turtle neck dress, the hair covers part of your face and the beauty of the dress around the neck area.
we need to see your fuIl face figure and earrings too. Remember,to change your hair do's when putting on certain attire. Your dressing should be simple and appropraite.
We saw your sexiness during your modelling days. MAYA should understand you have outgrown that stage. Tyra, you are a figure head, we are watching you, we look up to you and we will continue to adore you. stay blessed. Honey more grease to your elbows. Love you all.

My name is Nicole, and i'm from Long Island, New York. I'm 21 years old and i have a 1 year old daughter. A few weeks ago, my future sister-in-law was looking on-line for prom dresses and she was mad because she found really nice dresses, but the problem was that she didn't want to get anything because she didn't know what it would look like when she got it. I love your show and i watch it whenever i can, especially the episodes about plus size models. I'm somewhat average size but i was always a little bigger than i wanted to be so shopping sucked. So anyway, i was thinking that certain websites, and/or magazines should have all different size girls for each size dress up to whatever size the brand or company makes, so when girls of all different body shapes and sizes can get somewhat of an idea what the particular item would look like on.

Tyra,
After Oprah I generally turn and watch you. I saw the show where the young lady complained about the outfits you wear on the show. The next day (Friday) you wore a beige & black something that looked horrible on you. I can't find any other words to describe my despair for you wanting to please your fans. With your fashion sense and background, you and I both know everyone CAN NOT wear everything on the market. Like you, I am knock kneed and has accepted that fact somethings do not always look very becoming on me due to the knees. However, my legs are a little more shaplier and larger than yours, but when you wear form fitting dresses such as the one you had on, its not very flattering.
I have noticed Oprah's new look and I have to admit she's looking much better these days, except for the hair, she could use some improvement in that area.
Another thing, when you're inviewing on the couch, you have a trendecy to cut people off in mid sentence. I know you're working against the clock, but it's just rude.
One last thing, my stomach turned that you actually gave Anna Nicole's half sister, (whom had not SPOKEN TO ANNA IN 12 YEARS) the platform to give credence to her lies and BS. Earlier this week she was on Dr. Phil's and I was elated to see him unmask her for the fraud that she is. Everyone in that clan is trying to cash in on Anna's life. I knew Anna has since turned over in her grave that her "mother" has touched her baby. No wonder Anna wanted no part of them.
Well that's it, You're probably saying, "when will this lady end" so I will end it for now. However, I hope I can write you something for advice, my 19 yr daughter just came out the closet recently and I am not handling it very well and we're going through some things. Maybe I can get some unbiased feedback sometime.

I wanted to know where the stores in downtown you go to. I dont like spending more than 10$ on a blouse. I own over 300 fashionable tops that I've bought over the years and are still in good conditions. I also got them for cheap. I usually shop at Ross or Factory 2-u. Have you tried any of these stores?

Hey Tyra,
I loved the outfits on the show, i saw that they had lots of personality. One day, I would love to be a fashion designer. I'm only 16 yrs old though, but when I get older I want my own lable. It took me a long time to find a name for my clothes but I've decided to use my nick-name, which is 'Sunshine'!!! I design my clothes in a way that fits my personality, I create some that I dont like but I keep them all because others might like them. Fashion designing is my pashion, it's my future. And it's something that I'm really good.

Sarah -- I saw you on the show today and I was so impressed! The outfits you put together looked just like the runway shows in NYC...but at a fraction of the price!! You are so talented...I hope you get your own show someday!

I did want to ask you...how can one find "plus" size bargains at the vintage stores? I have a large booty and don't particularly like to accentuate it (if you know what I mean!). Any suggestions?
