I hope you achieve your aims Mariah. It's good that you wish to make your family proud. You should ensure you have a small varied range of photos inclding a good clear head-shot and at least one full length view to start your portfolio, people starting out don't need professional photos initially, despite what others trying to sell you something will tell you. Try to find local realistic and acheivable modeling work to get yourself going, but always keep your ultimate aims in mind! Good luck and best wishes.

Hello Tyra, you are probably reading a message from the biggest "America's Next Top Model" fan. I am 22 years old and 5'2. I have a strong passion for the modeling industry and I have been told time and time again that I am too short. I have accepted the fact that I will probably never walk a runway, and I'm okay with that, but I will not except no for an answer for modeling completely. You're my inspiration, as you are to many others, and your journey gives me hope. I would greatly appreciate it, if you could give me any pointers, tips, or just encouragement that this dream of mine is attainable. I need to be pointed in the right direction to get my foot in the door. Thanks sooo much!

There is alot of mention here (As in many Talents Sites) of John Robert Powers Talent Schools in connection to whether they are a scam.
Well they are not actually a scam as they do offer good training. However,it is the way that they operate that brings up questions time after time! John Robert Powers always say that people are Talented and have potential, they do this to get their money and get them signed up for long periods, promises of finding work placements for those talents later are rarely followed through and this is why people complain so much about Bad business Practice.
There will always be one or two who will disagree and say that they got invaluable experience via their time at JRP, but for many Parents it has proved to be a costly experience with disappointment for the youngsters signed up.
JRP will always say you are a Star that's how they get their fees from Parents, but I feel it is preying on the Aspirations of young Talents, if telling telling the whole truth about their chances!
That is my opinion on not just them but also other Modeling Schools who operate in that way.
Thank you for your time!

Great to see that viewers of your blog are taking such good notice of the need to check out possible Modeling agencies and the like!
There are many scams out there currently and also some Companies who are not scams as such, but do have very questionable business practises.
Child and Teen Modeling is an area that can be a mine-field with some places actually offering work inappropriate for the ages concerned, so that is another aspect to look out for.
Remember a few basic rules when considering modeling Agencies and work. A good agent/agency should not ask you for any money up-front, if they do then chances are they are fake. A good agent/agency if selecting you, should then be able to place you in suitable work and take their own percentage from that job on completion.
Beware of letters from people professing to be representing Big names such as Essentials Magazine etc, these type of magazines do not recruit in this way and certainly do not use freelance people to randomly e-mail people. Tell Tell signs in these approaches are e-mail addresses that are not corporate ie gmail! Bad Grammar in letters! Vague contact details and mobile numbers quoted.
Approaches to 'Minors'from Agents or Industry Professionals should be addressed to Parent/Guardian in reference to the Aspiring Talent!
These are just a few tips for those completely new to the Industry and I hope they help a little.

Dear Tyra,
I understand you're a very busy woman, but I have a question that's been killing me for a LONG time now. I am a 14 year old girl and modeling really is my passion. As much as I would LOVE to become a model and travel around the world, there are a few hardships that I am sorry to say that I have to face just like any other [typical] teenage girl. Bottom line, I'm short...(5'2 and a half to be exact). Another thing is that my family and I are not the richest if them. In fact, we REALLY cannot afford anything modeling related. It kills me to see my mom so sad just because she can't make my dream come true. I honestly don't have such a great confidence level and to say the least I am EXTREMELLY aware of my flaws and imperfections. Thank God that I have a loving family that thinks otherwise, but it really hasn't rubbed off on me just as yet. So please help me. PLEASE!!

Hi Tyra, I think that I just almost got scammed. I took my daughter to an audition that we heard on the radio from J.R.P. (John Robert Powers Talent School)in Houston Texas. They said that my daughter has great potiental. They wanted her to sign a contract with them and for them to market her and do her head shots,we had to pay 2900 dollars. After I did this I was very nervous. So that night I did some research and let me tell you, it was not nice. So the next morning I started taking care of business to get this stopped. Luckily I did, but this has always been a dream of my daughters every since she was about 4yrs. old. I want to know if you can give me some insights or if you know of any schools in Texas that are very legitimate. She is 8 now but will be turning 9 very soon in a few months and she is tall and skinny. Please can you give me some advice.
Thanks....

Hi, Tyra
I'm 16 years old, I'm 5'3, and I really would love to be a model or a singer someday. my mom always told me to have goals but its hard to keep them if you are not trying to reach them. So what im asking you is that maybe you can allow me to do some photo shots or sing for you or send a video of me modeling. I live in Eastman Ga. And I'd love to go any place you would insist if only you could give me a call or write back. I have plenty of pics. if you would like me to send those I could. But if you cant do any of those i would Love it if you would just give me some advice or tips for my future. Thanks and Hope to hear from you soon.
