What Is A Plus-Size Model?
Plus-size models participate in a variety of modeling jobs including print work, runway shows, and fit or informal modeling. Fashion modeling is the category aspiring models usually think of when they dream of being a model. Fashion plus modeling can include a magazine cover or layout, representing a plus-size manufacturer in print advertisements, or strutting down the catwalk in the latest Lane Bryant lingerie.
Requirements Can Include:
Between 5'8" and 6'0"
5'9" is pretty much minimum for larger markets though Wilhelmina in NYC does represent a few girls who are 5'7" and 5'8".
Size 12, 14, 16
Sizes 10 and 18/20 are also used, but are not as common.
Toned
You may be a "plus size," but you may have to be in shape if you model swimwear, lingerie or fitness gear.
Proportionate
You should be in proportion. Your bust, waist and hips should be about ten inches apart in size (i.e. 42-32-42) or very close. In addition, the shorter you are, the smaller your size should be. Someone who is 5'8" would be expected to wear a smaller size (12/14) than a taller model. It is all about length and proportion.
When looking for an agency to represent you, ask if they represent plus-size or commercial models. If they do, ask what their height and size requirements are. If you fit their requirements, ask to schedule an interview or find out if they have open calls. If you live a distance away from the agency, do a mail-in with your pictures and information.

Comments
I just wanted to say something due to the height of plus size models what if you want to be a plus size model and you are only 5ft 4in, what will they not ecept you cause we are talking about being alittle on the hipocritical, why would you choose only taller woman to model we went through this with the whole plus size modeling thing and now were being picky on what height models are I would love to be a model and hearing that I have to be 4 to 5 more inches taller is not really fair. If thats how it is then we really arn't getting any farther in this industry.

hi tyra??
how are you im doing fine.im 17 years old,and yes i am plus size.ive been this way all my life.i believe a size 14 or a size 10 is not considered plus.i think you should have a teen plus size modeling event on your show.the reason i say that is becuase im attending school now and i look at my beautiful big black sisters who go to school with me there self esteem is down, becuase they are afraid.i try to encourage people but it just wont work. i think it would help many over wieght kids thats in school now.im not saying this is encouriging kids to EAT more, but its just something to give them hope.i have high self esteem, and if it do cross your mind to have a fashion show for teens i will be honored to be in the event.

Tyra, Does it ever get old having others tell you how incredible you are and how beautiful you are? I hope not because I think your great. I love your spirit and love of life. I am a 47 year old mother of three grown children and now home after a year and a half of battling fibromyalgia. Still battling and not giving up. Sure wish you could share some of your energy. LOL. Love your show. Stay true to your self. God Bless!

I'm 15 and I'm 6'3". i wear a size 22 and i want to be a plus sized model. After seeing Monique's FAT Chance I wanted to be a part of it, but of course I'm way too young.lol. I was wondering if maybe you would be intrested in promoting much younger plus sized models? If so please contact me.

Hi Tyra!!!!!!! You inspire me so much, and i get a lot of beauty tips from you thank you TyraI'm Ariel and I think that I have what it takes to be Americas Next Top Plus Size Model. I'm 6'0 and weigh about 230 lbs. I am well proportioned and very confident about my body...Plus i wanna learn the catwalk from you

I love your show and I love the fact that you are now trying to stand up for the girls who are not a size 2. The only thing I have against modeling companies is that if you are short such as i am (5'3") then you are not model material.i was a size 5 before my daughter and everyone said you should be a model but i was always told i was to short. now im a small chested size 12/14 and everyone still says i should model but even plus size models are required to be taller. why is it that only tall women are to be seen as beautiful? thank you again for helping todays society to open up and see that a few extra pounds means nothing but a wonderful person inside is the most beautiful thing there is....
Posted by: Michelle | March 23, 2007 11:12 AM
Well, This is wonderful. You say plus size and talk about size 16?? I'd kill to be a size 16... I inherited being big from my family. And I have always thought that I wasn't too large compared to other girls... I'm 15, and 5'10", and weigh 320 lbs. and wear a size 28 pants (a size 18-20 shirts usually) I've tried diets- they make it worse. I have asthma bad, pretty much from allergies, etc. So working out, while I love being active, is not something I'm really able to do well. So I guess I'm a giant compare to everyone else?
I'm gonna go starve myself or something. There's nothing else I can do. =P At least I'll lose something. I'll be good enough for the rest of the world, eventually.
Or dead. One or the other.
Have a good day.

First, I want to address the comment posted in regards to the show rewarding Plus-size models for being obese. I think that If you feel this way then your problem lies within. Tyra, I watch your show daily. I've been writing not for myself but for my sister. I know without the shadow of a doubt that my sister has great potential to model. If it's the last thing that I accomplish in life I will get her a portfolio and get her on the right track to a successful modeling career. I believe that you are blessed and you are blessed because you share what God has blessed you with, with other sisters. Thank you for all that you do.

Hi Tyra
I am only 16 years old and have always dreamed of being a model. Everybody says that I will never have a chance because of the way I look, but you have inspired me in many ways and every time I see you on tv it's just like I know one day I will become a model no matter what. I have been through some bad times in these past years i have nothing it's like i'm nobody. You are a very pretty woman and I know you could help me in some kind of way to build self confidence in myself. Until then i'll keep my head up. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Tyra!
First I must start by saying that you are an inspiration to me. You are truly down to earth and you keep it real all the time! I love ya :o)
I am 27 years old and want to pursue plus size modeling. All of my life I have been heavy and I just recently lost some weight. I went from 238lbs to 196lbs. I am 5'8 1/2 and aiming to lose about 30 more pounds while toning.
To be honest, my body is not in the best of shape but I know that is something I have to work hard on. Do you think it would be better to try and begin a career in plus size modeling after I lose the rest of the weight? Or would I be considered in a safe haven being that my measurements are 40-35-40?
It seems to be a bit tricky with plus size modeling because someone can be the same height, weight and have the same measurments as me, but look much bigger or even smaller. What is your take on this?
Posted by: Heather | March 15, 2007 07:33 PM
HI TYRA! I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN OF MY TIME, YOU TRULY DESERVE ALL OF YOUR SUCCESS. ANYWAY, I JUST HAVE BEEN BURSTING TO ASK YOU; I AM AN ASPIRING MODEL (LIKE I'M SURE YOU HEAR ALL THE TIME). I AM SUPER AMBITIOUS AND HAVE HEARD MY WHOLE LIFE THAT MODELING IS SOMETHING I SHOULD BE SERIOUSLY PURSUING. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM IS I'M ONLY 5'4. YOU ALLOW PLUS SIZE WOMEN INTO YOUR COMPETITION BUT NOT PETITE, WHY IS THAT? I'M BLACK AND LATINA (PUERTO-RICAN) AND I KNOW FOR MY LATINA WOMEN ESPECIALLY THERE ARE A LOT OF US! I WEAR STILLETOS EVERYDAY BECAUSE I DON'T WANT MY HEIGHT TO HOLD ME BACK! I'VE GOTTEN POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM SOME PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY, BUT THEY ALWAYS ADDRESS MY HEIGHT. I WANT TO BE A SERIOUS COMMERCIAL PRINT MODEL BUT FOR THE EXPOSURE I'M COMTEMPLATING SOME SWIMSUIT STUFF. I KNOW YOU'RE REALLY BUSY BUT I HEARD YOU SAY ON THE SHOW YOU READ YOUR EMAILS. I HEAR YOU TALKING TO THE GIRLS ON ANTM AND I KNOW I COULD DO WHAT THEIR DOING AND A LOT MORE. I'M REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT MODELING AND WHEN YOU COME BACK TO MY CITY I DON'T CARE IF YOU ONLY ASK FOR GIRLS 5'7 AND UP, I'LL BE THERE. I DON'T WANT TO LET 3 INCHES DETER ME FROM MY DREAM.

Hi Tyra! First of all, you are so exotic and beautiful!! Boy, the color brown/black is such a pretty color for skin, and your eyes - wow. My name is Connie and I am excited to find myself thinking of Plus size modeling. I have been about average all of my life but have gained a few pounds. I am 5'8" and weight 220 pounds. It doesn't look bad but it is uncomfortable to carry extra weight around. Since I don't have much hope with losing some weight at this time (I guess I am in a stage where I love to eat junk) hormones maybe, I don't know. I am 44 years old. My son used to model when he was a baby, Emporium Capwell, Mervyn's, Weinstock's, and almost did a commercial for Levi's and the like but we had to book out due to a burn he suffered on his arm. Anyway, just checking in to see if this is possible. I need to feel good about myself lately. I hear something (not kidding) every day about my legs and how fit they look. My husband thought I was an athlete when we first met (8 years ago). Well, I've sure taken up some space here. I am totally and utterly serious about this. I did some lingerie modeling when younger but bodies sure have a way of changing don't they; well I have had two children so things just are not the same after that. I am beautiful inside and out (I have a hard time saying that for some reason) - well the outside part anyway. I work at home as a medical transcriptionist and have for 19 years but when I go out just to the store, people all around me are starring at me; either I have something in my nose or they see my legs and body and are happy with what they see. Ok - I will be quiet. Please consider perhaps making this easier on me due to my crazy schedule. I will look in the library for books on Plus size modeling and see what I can find. Please get back to me on this; I am anxious to do something for myself for once. You are so nice too! (forgot to mention above). Take care and have a nice day! Love to you, Connie

hey wazzup tyra!! what about the girlz who are a size 24-26 etc.. i just posted a show idea i hope u take it into consideration. there are a LARGE number of women out there who are in the bigger sizes and need some recognition too. now me myself i am 6'2 and a size 26-28 very gorgeous and very proportioned. i think u should have gurlz on your show my size to disspell some of these myths like we hate ourselves and we're nasty because we stuff our face all day long What!! i want to represent all of my bigger gurlz because i feel alienated when i look around and on t.v. and there's nobody that looks like me. i want to motivate my bigger girlz and spread the message that everything has beauty its just that not everyone can see it!! i hope to be on your show soon !! Love Yours Tuely

Hey I think that it's wonderful that the modeling industry is acknowledging the beauty of a plus size woman but what about the other women who aren't considered plus size and are not stick thin. Like me I wear a dress size 8 and jean size 9. Where would someone like myself fit in the modeling world?

Hey Tyra,
Thanks for letting the world know that plus size women are beautiful too. You really give me inspiration because I am a High School student preparing for college and some times your peers can be hard on you if you're not the typical size. But you inspired me to know that I am beautiful and Yes I am plus size and I may not look like all the others but "So What" I'm still beautiful. Beauty has no age, color, weight,or size. Thanks for taking the time to let your viewers know. I will continue to look at your show and give you much support. Keep up the great work.

Hi Tyra!
As an aspiring plus-size model, I would like to thank you for embracing what I would like to call the average woman of today.
Beauty comes in all shapes, colors and sizes. Thank you for bringing this message to the runway and mainstream America!
Question: Are there any prominent modeling agencies that specialize in plus-size models only?
Peace and blessings,

HI TYRA!!! I know you may never read this comment or me and my sister will never make it on your show but I just want you to know how happy I am to see you supporting plus size girls. You just don't know how much it means to me to see you supporting the "big" girls. Me and my Twin sister LaTera would like to meet you and come to your show. A lot of people tell us that we should be Models and I think that we could be the next big thing in plus size modeling. I know you will never get this message but I want you to know that I love you anyway.

Hey Tyra,
I think it would be really great if you did an entire ANTM strickly for for 'plus' size women.
Its amazing how a size 12 is considered as plus size. The reality of it is that thats the average size of most women today. Plus size is beautiful and an entire ANTM season of this would be great.. What do you think Tyra??
Posted by: SQ | March 1, 2007 05:09 AM
Thanks for supporting plus-size models! I am 14, and have always been a size 9-12. I know that's not considered plus-size, but you taught me not to hate myself for the way I look. You really boosted my self-confidence. Before, when I thought "thin" was everything I starved myself. I was so close to being hooked on losing weight (anorexia). I thought I ugly and fat. The smallest meals looked humungous, and it got really hard for me to eat. Today I'm just glad I ended up getting out of my entrapment with food before it was too late. You've just really taught me what real beauty is. I know you'll probably never see my message, but I just wanted to let you know that I will always respect you, and keep watching your show because it's inspiring.
Thanks Tyra.

Hey Tyra,
I just wanted to say that it is great that you are promoting plus size women and the beauty that they have. I just wanted to agree to one of the other blogs that you should have a plus size male modeling show. I always thought I could be a model but I am plus sized. I would like to be on the show. Mid August would be good for me.
Love you Tyra.

hey tyra! All my life Ive been told that I should be a model. I'm 5'5, have a pretty face, and a size 8-9. When I finally went on a modeling audition they told me that I was too big to be a runway model and too small to be a plus size model? Is there any type of modeling out there for girls that are just right. ps: I would love to meet u one day or just be on your show.

Hey Ms.Tyra I love what you are doing for women and young girls. Every time i watch your show I become more in love with you. I have always dreamed of modeling and KNOW I can do it. Plenty of people tell me I should do plus sized modeling, but always considered it as wanabe models too fat to get 'real' work. BUT I am going to try out for Wilhelmina's open casting call for plus size models and when I make Im going to thank yu boo!!!I love you Tyra!

Tyra, I just wanted to thank you so much for giving me the confidence that I have always been lacking. I watch your show every morning and I love it by the way, but when you had everyone in little red suits with their weights on them, omg it woke me up. I have always been worried with my weight and because of that show I now know it's not what anyone else thinks or says, it's about how I feel. And thanks to you, now I feel normal and I don't care what anyone else says!!!! You have taught me that everyone is beautiful in their own way, and yes I look at everyone different these days. Thank you soooooo much for giving me the confidence you have!!!!

I think it is a wonderful idea of using "plus" sized models to protest against the mind set that all models should be skin and bones, however, what about me? I'm not a "plus" size and I'm not stick thin. I'm a size 4-6 and I've got muscle. How come people of my size and build can't be used? The reason I ask this is because when you put women on that are of bigger sizes it proves the point that you don't need to be super thin to be beautiful, but what about the health factor? Are these women any healthier then women who aren't eating?
Posted by: Rebecca | February 27, 2007 10:15 AM
I was just thinking that in light of the recent "Overweight Tyra" frenzy, that Tyra should do a modeling show for plus size models. I think that would make the fight stronger and reach out to so many normal women. Or, even doing a modeling show for the average women, maybe size 10's or 12's. Just a thought! Keep up the good work Tyra!
Posted by: Bonnie | February 27, 2007 10:06 AM
Although I feel you are trying to help young women with the "plus sized model" thing, the idea that an AVERAGE sized woman (size 12) should be looked upon as a "plus size" is what contributes to destroying so many young girls' self esteem in the first place. The average size of an American woman is size 12. Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 and NO ONE considers her a "plus size'! Healthy women and girls come in all shapes and sizes--the focus should be on health --not on fitting into fashion society's view of what is "minus" or what is "plus".

Hey Tyra,
I have always been a fan of yours ever since I was little. I always had a dream of becoming a model, because I used to want to be just like you and Cindy Crawford. As I became older I realized that goal was somewhat unattainable for me. I am also tall, 5'11 and curvy. In the last few years plus size modeling has come to my attention by friends who tell me I should try plus size modeling because I have the right kind of body for it, but I havent been able to concentrate on that goal because my mom was very sick the last year with liver cancer and she passed away last October. It still is somewhat wearing on me, but I really want to do become a plus size model because I believe I have everything it takes. I also want to set an example for girls, because I am realizing more than ever the pressure to be thin, especially because I live with 7 other girls. I would really like the opppertunity, but I just know where or how to start, is there anyway you can help me? Thank you
Love always,
Ashley

I love your show, I know that has been said several times but I would like to let you know my personal reason why: I have always had a problem with how I look, I never made an effort to stand out in high school, university i spent many years avoiding eye contact or talking in class, I hated going into clothing stores with my skinny friends, and mirrors were torture devices. I also found millions of things to do in a day, instead of trying to feel good about myself, when I watched your show on plus sized women, it really helped me to not hate myself. This hollywood skinny myth, made it hard for me to like me, and I want to say that you really helped me to see past what I thought society would perceive as ugly, and realize that it was just a lie and that I was pretty and deserved the time spent out of each day to feel pretty. I have a great deal of respect for you, you are an amazing woman and I just want to let you know that you really made a difference for me and many other women out there. I think the world needs more people like you.
thanks,
your #1 Canadian fan

I know i have what it takes to do it but the opportunity is'nt available to me due to my height. i would like to know if you know of any agencies, or clothing companies that take models fitting my description in new york for print or television. I dont know where else to look besides an agency, or entertainment classifieds.Where else is there to look.

Hey Tyra, I wanted to start off by saying that I love you and your show! My name is Shannon and I'm a thick chick.lol I think I have what it takes to be a full figured model. I live in Oklahoma and it's hard to get on with modeling agencies because Oklahoma doesn't have any connections. I would LOVE to have the opportunity to be a pluse size model! I'm 5'9 and I wear a size 14 or 18. (I'm 20 years old for the record) So if there is any way that you could help me at all with achieving my goal, It would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Tyra
Saw the show on the plus size models. From a man's point of view I could truly say these were attractive women, because they not only looked good but they had personality and substance which shined through.I agree with what a fellow viewer commented earlier. I think it would be great if you featured a plus size male modeling show to also show that beaty in men comes in more than just size 30 waist jeans, and washboard abs that you see depicted on men everywhere you go. It's become so generic it makes me sick. Men just like Women are diverse in shapes and sizes and I feel that at the end of the day(in both a man or woman) it's what's inside that matters.

Tyra, I live in South Eastern OK in a VERY small neighborhood and I am FLUFFY, I have been told by many people that I have very pretty legs and I dont think I am pretty but I would love the glamour of getting to model just one time, I do have pretty hands and nails also, can you help me out or send me in the right direction? My funds would be limited but I am a very strong willed person so I AM AN ACHIEVER!! Thanks CC

HI TYRA,
MY NAME IS IDA AND I WANT TO SE HOW IT IS TO BECOME A PLUS SIZE MODEL. I AM A FULL FIGURED 19 YEAR OLD WHO THINK SHE IS A SIZE 5. BUT ANY WAY I JUST WANT TO DO A PHOTO SHOOT JUST TO SEE WHAT IT IS LIKE. CAN YOU HELP ME.

Dear Tyra,
i would like to start off by saying that i admire what you do by helping young girls like me develop a positive self image. and, that i saw you one night at the Beacon for the Madea play, u look awesome! lol Anyway, the plus size model search i thought was a great idea. I do have one thing to say about it... the fact that you have to be a certain height and what is called "protionant" being described as something like "42-32-42". I must say that i hope that it doesn't apply to all plus size models. aren't you the one who says that we should embrace our big bootys and breasts, and if so is it possible that someone like me who wants to be a plus size model who is 5"4 41-33-47,(big Booty lol) doesn't really have a chance to be a real model. Tyra i believe in your message, i also believe you have the power to change things for all girls like me.
i hope that you use that power and will use it for the good for all girls plus size, thin, short, and tall. To break down the standards of modeling for other girls after our generation. To believe that "I can do this just how I am!" That's all i ask. You have brought us a long way tyra, and i hope you can inspire more to follow the path of self love and acceptance. No matter the shape size color or gender.
Sincerely,
Marissa 17, Long island Ny
P.S.
I don't care what the papers say, YOU LOOK GOOD GIRL!!!! Keep on that thickness.

I am 5'6" but I can be 5'8" with hills (40-34-40) I'm always told that I look like Queen Latifa Im sorry if I didnt spell that right. What is a plus sized model? It's hard to think about. I think everybody is beautiful in their own way. But before plus was a "don't" but now Tyra we have so many items for women who are plus sized, that it makes no differance.
Posted by: Taylor | January 19, 2007 04:40 PM
Hey Tyra, I just wanted to say thank you for letting the world know that beauty and sexiness is not only for the size 2. When I saw the show with plus size models I was in awe that they had so much confidence. They were not ashamed at all and that is something that us "thick" women need to see. I t was not until I started dating the man that I'm with now that I became comfortable with my size. There were certain things that I would have never felt comfortable in had he not been there to show me that as long as I kept it classy & not trashy it was all good. I would love to be apart of the next show for the plus size. Maybe you can have a plus size Top Model Show, hmmmm, think about it. Keep it up, we "Big Girls" need love too.
Posted by: Shelley | January 18, 2007 10:03 PM
I think plus size modeling is great, and I hope it becomes more recognized. It is geared towards promoting more normal beauty, but still the standards seem strange. Considering the average woman is bigger, but most women are around 5'6". Maybe modeling will never be in sync with those things, and maybe it also has to do with how the camera captures shorter women? Anyway, not trying to bash, just making a point. I do hope fashion becomes more realistic though:)

Hi Tyra,
Ive been modeling for two years now(im 15)and Ive always dreamed of being a lingerie model. But im a size 16 and 5'9'' and I thought that was impossible. I didnt even know all the stuff that was open to plus size models its pretty sweet if i do say so.
Posted by: Mia | January 14, 2007 08:24 PM
Your show was great. However, after reading what qualifications you need to be considered"plus"I find it humerous.....
You can only be above average height...5`8-6`0(sometimes 5`7')and between a 12-16 (sometimes 18-20).
Do the agencies who make these rules have any idea what the average woman really considers "full figure",do they know the average height of women?
Your are punished in the "skinny world" for having a full body to start with. Why would an agency( who claim to be for the full figured woman) conform to the "skinny world"model criteria?

Hi Tyra,
I just want everyone here to know that "all women are beautiful" You don't need to be a model, to know that you are beautiful. I was looking for acceptance in modeling, and all it did was stress me out, and made me compare myself to other women! Luckily I got out when I did! Also rejection isn't fun either! Good luck to anyone aspiring to be a model of any sort!

hey tyra i have always wanted to be a plus-size model because i want to do something with my life. I want to show other people that you just don't have to have the small look to be a model. I've always wanted to show everyone what i got and show them that i believe in myself and i'm not afraid to show off my figure.

Tyra,
im writing because I wanted to be a model all of my life but things in life happened and it changed my life. I have always dreamed of becoming a model. But it seems like people have no place for plus size ladies.Just because we are a little big doesnt mean we dont have feelings. The reason I couldnt model when I was younger I became a mom at the age of 14 and Ive always battled my weight after I gave birth. So if you can please help me in some how to still fulfill my dreams I would owe you my life..
Thanks Tyra

Hey tyra,
I love your show! I was actually supposed to see it in person last year when queen latifa and ll cool j where on but there was no more seats!! :( i came all that way. oh well I've been told that i could be a plus size model but the one thing they want me to have is a car so that ill be able to get around, for one i dont have a licence and for two im stuggling to survive life. I would love to follow my heart for photography and go to school but im poor and i only have a GED. Im trying to keep my head up and roll with the punches, its really hard. Im a 19 yr old black women with no experience a GED and a head full of determination. I would love to get into the modeling field. I just dont know if ill survive if i dont make it. I'm living pay check by pay check feeling as if im not getting anywhere. I've been told by many that im easy to work with,i take critisism well i cant really spell but im intellegent. I love people and im able to tolerate a lot. oh tyra why dont you have america's next top plus size model! it would broaden peoples minds about the world and it would be able to educate everyone that being bigger is not such a bad thing maybe girls will feel better about themselves if they see its ok to be themselves and not worry about being a little bigger i think it would make a big impact!!! I love you Tyra

Dear Tyra,
My name is Keshia and i live in Illinois, i know its kinda far but your shows make me feel really close. Being a pluz size model hasn't been a very long dream of mine. I used to be a very heavy set gril, i used to weight 240lbs size 24/26 at 5'5 when i was 13 years old, everyone would make fun of me calling me fatty, orge, and big foot, which affected me at school. i told myself i would never let anyone put me down but after awhile the pain just grew, so, i decided i need to loose weight. i gained and lost, gained and lost and now at the age fo 17 turning 18 in July. i weight 190-200lbs at 5'8 a size 18/20. And with the help of my mom i have taken good care of myself and i feel beautiful now. Ive tried modeling programs before but nothing really seemed to work out. All of my friends and family think im beautiful and think ive done really good for myself. Im good very well in school im on the A-B honor roll with a 3.4 GPA in many clubs.Im very social now and lovin it. Also, been going and even dating now. My confidence is so much better.
Love Keshia.

hi tyra,
i am 17 years old and i have wanted to model since i was 15. i do plan on being a plus size model because im in a 15/16 in jeans. i want to lose weight though before i start. i have come a long way with my self esteem. i use to hate the way i looked because im 5'11, darkskined, and i've always had a body since the 3rd grade. i want to be a role model for other girls that are going through the same problem i was going through. i tried this modeling agency but the lady wanted 1200 sometheing dollars and my daddy told me that we have to try another agency because this was a scam.in 2008 when i graduate i plan on attending Florida A&M UNV. to major in psychology. so please wish me luck. i plan on going far in my modeling dreams and i want to be the first plus size model to things that plus size models have not done before.

Hello Tyra, let me just say that out of all the day time shows that i could watch, your s is the ones that i always have to change the channel to on 12am to see what is on. I'm only 15 and yet by watching so many of your shows i have seen that you have one of the best shows out there. Modeling is something that my mother has been trying to get me and my 2 younger sisters in. But we all come from a large size family. We are colombian, and so we have that in us so be are not as slim and skinny as some would think. I'm about s'4, i can't tell anymore because i used to be the tall one, then when 8th grade came around i got short.. lol, well i want to know, when it comes to plus side modeling, why is that, even though it is called plus side modeling, that now aday, they are trying to use plus sixe models, but have to have them to a serten 'T', i mean the sizes you HAVE to be ,and the heigh. Don't get me wrong but when i think plus size, i think about some lady, or woman that i see at wal-mart. I think that when it comes to modeling you should of course be good at it, But what about what about what you are trying to sell. Modeling IS something that (since i saw America's next top model) i wanted to try, but i have never been able to get it out of my mind that not many people are going to want to have some girl my size and age be on the run way, there are alot of things about modeling that i love, and i know that i would have to get over my stage fright to do it, but i mean, right now with the way that the fashon world is, and the way that the industery is going, i don't think that plus size models are truely what a plus size model should be. I hope that you don't take this the wrong way, but i just think that one day soon (i hope) we can see plus side models, walking the runways and not have people making fun of them and just adminring them, because in the end all they want to do is model, and that means they want to show them selfs off to the world and they are proud of it. And the one thing that i think no one ever thinks of is how most girls and woman that are plus sized ,can remeber a time when they got made fun of. So i believe and am thankfull that you take the time to have plus size models on your show, just one sept closer so a time when i can walk down the street and now have to worry about all the billboards and sign with these super skinny models and girls all around me. So i hope you can understand what i mean but all of this. Thank you for reading this. and i hope one day when i am 18 that i will be able to come on your show *plus i think my mom would be a great person for a makeover, but i will save that for another time* so thank you again

Dear Tyra,
I'm so glad that plus size modeling is here! The full figured woman has it going on too. I grew up a stick, and then had two children and the weight never left. I'v worked out, but never had low self esteem. I love to rock my clothes and shoes. I represent the District of Columbia. And I'm a single mom of twon sons ages 15 and 21 years of age. I had it very tough! But only the strong stands! So, if you are ever looking for full figure models email me or call me. I will be glad to be apart of the full figure fashion world! And Tyra I want to say I respect you and every way that you give back to the entire world!
Love you and keep up your Angel work!

Hey Tyra!
Im only 15 but i got dreams that are close to impossible. I always wanted to be in the modeling industry, and my family is not so supportive because of my weight. I am comfortable in my own skin and i beleive that plus size women or as i like to call them, "thick", should have a chance to show them talent. My face is what catches eyes and my body is curvyer than skinny models, but its my wieght that throws it off and i just know that ill never have a chance. Can you help me be my biggest fan?

hey tyra. I am 14 years old. I am 5'6 and i would consider myself bigger than some girls. Your show shows us girls that just because you are bigger doesn't matter.
I love your show so much.
You make everyone feel beautiful & confident in themselves.
Two years ago I was the most unconfident girl you would ever meet. Now I am very confident in myself.
I think that you have changed many peoples lives in many different ways.
A lot of girls my age admire you.
You are successful & confident & gorgeous.
Thanks for being such a good role model

Hey Tyra! I am from Trinidad and Tobago! I am 14 years old and I must say I'm not skinny! lol Watching your show and America's Next Top Model i was able to learn so much about myself and who I am and who I could be. I was very insecure about my size (I can be considered plus size) I mean being in a classroom of girls who are all slim and trim is always a pressing issue within my life. I always loved modeling posing in front of cameras when I was smaller (back then i wasnt so self conscious though...) always doing my walk in the corridor etc. And to me i always feel like i have to prove myself to everyone to prove that we are all beautiful individuals no matter what or how we may appear. I really would like to be a model someday and maybe one day meet tyra herself! Thanks TYRA! STAY THE BEAUTIFUL PERSON THAT YOU ARE!! YOU TRULY ARE MY ROLE MODEL!

First of all I would like to commend you for your efforts to let all women know just how beautiful they really are, whether super-model skinny or plus-sized divas. My only concern is that women don't come in just these two sizes! They come in several sizes, shapes, and proportions! Some co-workers and I were discussing this one day, and we feel a little left out of the fashion world because we are sizes 6, 8, 10, or 12. None of us are extrememly tall, although I am 5'7". I would like to see an episode where you embrace the "average" sized girls, the women who can never find their size on the rack because someone else got there first!

What up Tyra!
Great show on plus-sized women; however, I was uncomfortable with the elimination part.
The women were told that they were beautiful as they were, then, without much ado, they were eliminated. Was this a reality check about the modeling world; that rejection comes with the business?
It would have been nice if you had presented the losers with an elimination prize such as a small gift certificate. This being said, I am glad you featured the plus-size woman because we all deserve love and attention no matter what size skin we are in. As for all the naysayers of the show, please! FAT PEOPLE KNOW THAT BEING FAT OR OBESE IS NOT HEALTHY. Most could write books about their diet and exercise programs. What is important is that they are not treated as if they do not have a right to exist, and are loved and accepted, whatever their size.
Statistics wise, chances are that most of us, as we grow older, will find ourselves battling the fat monster, so we should all learn to be kind and tolerant.
I remember seeing a show about a corporate executive who critisized a woman who used food stamps in a store
check-out line. "Why don't you get a job instead of spending my hard-earned tax dollars!" he growled. "I tried and tried," she said, "No one will hire me." "Yeah, right!" he smugly snorted. Soon after, the executive lost his job in a layoff and it took two years of endless job hunting to find another steady job. Having walked in the woman's shoes, he said that he wished that he could somehow apologize to her. My point? Be a gentle person with our plus-sized sisters because the fat to slim journey is in no way easy.

Tyra,
I was on Mo'Nique's FAT Chance, 2nd season, so when I heard my friend Sunni was going to be on your show for the full figured competition...I almost lost my mind...lol I am so excited that you have done this. I sure do hope you do it again. I receive emails every day from full figured women who really want to model, but have no idea how to start or where. I met Sunni at the academy I started modeling at and I always admired her level of confidence and fierce-ness. I am so glad that you chose her to be on your show. Tyra, I can only pray that you do this again...even if the requirements have to parallel agency requirements. So many of us want the chance to be a part of an agency and you have made yourself a mogul, a guide, and an expert that we all are encouraged by.
Be blessed,
Tiffany

Hello Tyra,
Let me start off my introducing myself, my name is Sierra, age 17, and I'm from Northwestern Pennsylvania. I admire the break through that you have worked so hard for. I, my self, am a plus sized girl, wearing a size 26-24 depending on the brand and/or style. Ever since I can remember, I have always been bigger than average... even before I started school. Anyways, I don't think that Plus size modeling should be only for the smaller plus sizes. I believe it should be for all. Over the years there have been many people who have said a lot about beauty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Beauty is only skin deep, Beauty is what you make of it, and of course etc. I guess what I am trying to say is that if there is going to be plus size modeling, or any modeling of any sort, it should include everyone to the max. limitations. I feel that leaving out some is only and insult to the people of those sizes. Of course there has to be some sort of self-esteem issue somewhere in there, I admit myself that I as well as many people of my size, have a self-esteem issue. Although, I am not afraid to stand up and say, "Yes I'm plus size" As if we aren't already left out from major brand labels, if you're going to be putting something out there associated with "plus size" I think it should be represented with more definition and a larger variety.
Thanks Tyra!

Hey Tyra
I really enjoyed your show when you had the Thick and Sexy Model Search. I have been a plus size girl, almost my entire life. Even when I was young, i always wanted to be a model. I think it would be a great idea is you did a show similar to Americas Next Top Model, the Thick and Sexy Edition. Being in Louisiana, I feel there is no hope to be a model, but I still wanna try. I was close to going to audiutions in high school, but I had to turn down due to the fact that my mother was sick with cancer. She always believed in me and I want to prove to myself that i can do it. So please consider doing show like americas next top model again. Thanks love ya

Thank Tyra

Hi Tyra,
I enjoyed your show for the "Thick & SEXY. I am a beautiful plus size woman size 20. I also like Beyonce clothing line and it seems like yall are pretty close. I was wondering if you could ask her to consider marketing House of Dereon for plus size woman. Furthermore, I think it is so discriminating when celebrities market their clothing to the slim and skinny people. We want to look sexy too, but in a bigger and better version. LOL

Wow! Its so great your doing something for plus size women! I am one myself and i know that plus size women are as beautiful as regular size women.I was actually chosen to go to Barbizon. Only i couldnt do it because i didnt have enough money! I just want to show the world that just because im plus size dosent mean im not BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Hello Tyra,
I was wondering when were you going to do another plus size model show. I am very interested in applying for the next show.

HEY TYRA,
HOW ARE YOU MY NAME IS CHANEL AND I'M 24 YRS OF AGE, I STAND 6FT AND I WEIGH 162lbs. MY MEASUREMENTS ARE 34-25-45 AND I WEAR A SIZE 6-8 DEPENDING ON THE BRAND OF CLOTHING...I WOULD CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE A CURVACEOUS YOUNG LADY; HOWEVER IN SOCIETY I'M CONSIDER AS AN PLUS SIZE WOMEN IF I WAS TO PURSUE A MODELING CAREER... DON'T GET ME WRONG PLUS SIZE WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL AND I BELIEVE BEAUTY COMES IN ALL SIZES AND SHAPES... BUT I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHERE I FIT IN AT....
I COMMEND YOU FOR ALWAYS BEING YOURELF, AND ALWAYS REPRESENTING WOMEN FOR WHO THEY ARE!!!!
PLEASE CONTINUE TO GIVE WOMEN THE OPPURTUNITY TO SHOW BEAUTY FOR WHAT IT IS....
TO BE QUITE HONEST MOST BLACK WOMEN ARE NOT A SIZE 0-2 WE HAVE HIPS AND BUTT AND MEN MAGAZINES AND VIDEOS SHOULDN'T BE THE ONLY TIME WE GET A CHANCE TO SHOW OUR CURVES....

Hey Tyra, what about "medium" models.
I'm roughly a size 8, 140-145 lbs, I'm losing weight but I don't think I have a small enough bone structure to be skinny for "regular" modeling.
Watching your show when they said that the agency wanted "healthy" I was confused because all of the plus sized models that appeared on your show to me were overweight, as in their B.M.I. was 25+
What about the medium? Is there any hope for someone like me in the future?
Posted by: Laura | December 6, 2006 09:38 PM
Dear Tyra,
I love the your show, but I don't really understand the plus size models. At this day in age we criticize supper models for being too skinny or anorexia but we show how its ok to be morbidly obese? can we find a happy in the middle?
Posted by: joseph | December 6, 2006 09:36 PM
I LOVE your show Tyra!!! I love the fact that you have been giving us big and beautiful girls the attention. I love the shows you have for plus size modeling. I would like to be a part of that however, for as short as I am, 5"4', I don't see that happening. I would love the opportunity. I currently work for a very well known plus size store. The girls I work with say I have a unique face. Is there any hope for girls short like me?
Posted by: Megan | December 6, 2006 09:23 PM
Tyra i love that you care about the pluse size girls becaus i am 15 and 6 ft size 16. Its so hard bein tall and bigger even though people say i look thin i dont feel like it. I have alwaysed wanted to be a model but no one want to help out or they want me to change my hair and lose weight. So i think your so great for doing this and you can really make a change for all us pluse size girls.
Posted by: Emilly | December 6, 2006 02:49 PM
Hey Tyra...I love both of your shows...I always watch them. I admire everything you're doing, one day I hope to do something similar :) But I just wanted to say, doing a plus size season would be a great idea, I would love to watch that. I honestly think some of the most beautiful women in the world are plus-size and it would be a great opportunity for them. I had wanted to try out for Americas next top model this season, but decided against it because I had some weight to loose. Im 5'9 and a size 10 right now, and am focusing on loosing weight, so mabe next season Ill be ready, but I'd probably still be a size 6 or 8, and be one of the largest of the group. Its just confusing because Im happy with myself, but I have to continue to loose weight for my dream career you know? Well my thoughts on the plus size season is definitly try to get one together and advertise as much as possible. Ive been watching cycle 7 and noone this season is even attractive in my opinion, but just because they're a size 0 they made the show. If you do a plus size season, you will get a lot more people to try out and display so many different types of beauty.

Hey Tyra,
Well, I have been a big fan of America's next top model, and I would also like to see a "plus size" edition of top model. Not only that, but I have always wanted to try modeling, but because of my height I have always felt like I will never be able to accomplish that. Is there any hope for women under 5'8?
Oh, one last thing, why dont you try doing a show with guys as the competing models? that might be different and definitely something I would want to watch! Just a thought.
Thanks!

why cant short girls be models?
seriously!
not those so called models that pose in front of cars wearing slutty outfits but an actual real super model!!
and when i say short i dont mean 5'6.. and such.. im talking about adults being like 5 feet... why cant they be models!!!!
Posted by: mooh | December 1, 2006 03:36 AM
TYRA you are just amazing,
I loved the show. I wish I could grow a few more inches because I am just full of all this energy and I love to take pictures. WOW! If I had the talented photographers you have on the top model show I would probally have a shrine of myself lol. I just want to say thanks. Not every girl is a 0-4 and its cool how you highlighted that we can all look and feel beautiful no matter what color, race , size we are on your show. And the way helped the recovered meth women was just touching. Keep up thr helping and the show stopping lol. Be blessed

That's just awful.
I read your article about BDD and it's no wonder why larger woman feel as awful as they do and suffer far too much for simply representing a different proportion of beauty.
My stats:
29 with progressive Multiple Sclerosis
5'5"
240lbs.
44-52-56 (not near 10 different)
Oh yeah, and beautiful without a doubt, in it's sincerest form.
I don't mean to put down any of the beautiful models of any size, I'm just writing hoping yourself and all the girls/fans out there like myself will read through this comment and at least give my size a thought.

Hi Tyra My name is Tiffany and i am from Trenton,Nj. I was just wondering why it is that you dont have a full figured plus size show like you do for top model. I knw that you did a show on it but i wanted to know why you dont try a season like you do with top model. I would really like for you to answer this being that i am full figured plus size women and very happy with myself.

"THANK YOU" Ms. Banks for airing yesterdays show on Plus size models. I am also a plus size women. After having 3 children it has been extremely hard to lose the weight. It would be nice if the requirements were unlimited, so that my 5'7 240lbs. 18/20 figure could model. Your show helped me keep a smile while carrying my weight. Expect to see more shows in the future. Keep up the Great Shows. You are truly blessed!!!

Here's something to think about...Marilyn Monroe wore what today would be about a size 12. So, would she be a plus sized model?!
Posted by: Juli | November 30, 2006 03:44 PM
WOW, What an amazing show you did on the plus sized models.. I am an insiring model, and even tho Im not as tall as most would want, Im cute as hell. And I loved that you did this for us,because we are what woman look like. And giving us the spot light was refreshing.. Hit me back if you ever do a show, plus sized models, on the short side... Im so here.. Ilove youTyra, thanks!!

Hey, I also loved the "Thick and Sexy" Model Show... I also believe beauty come in all shape and sizes, and the real women are not a size '0'!. Though reading what goes under "Big Size Model" it still seem a little wrong. For example Im 19, latina -puerto rican- and latinas tend to be short and yes 'curvy' ... and you have to be over 5'9 thats impossible to me.. Im 5'1 breast and hips "back" are in proportion though I wear about a size 12 (I been up and down and was for a lil while a size 7 ... but is usually around 10-11) ...
And it seems to me that when I see these run model shows I never quite fit in any... because Im not extremely thin as what considered "beautiful" but neither am 5'9 weearing a 16 and such.
Anywayz, I appreciate taking in consideration big girls, and the collections were beautiful!
Thanks Tyra for including, and taking ALL GIRL in consideration!

Thank you for doing a plus size model search. That is more what women look like. I was wondering if any of these agencies take on shorter models. I can always change my weight but I can only do so much with my height.
Posted by: Latisa | November 30, 2006 02:40 PM
I dont understand why the shorter or taller you are reflects what your body looks like... i'm 5'8 and a size 20.. the last time i was a size 12 was in elementary school (actually i think i skipped that size)... my skinniest i was still a size 16 and that was 80lbs ago! we are not proportioned like everybody else.. my bust and hips are bigger than my waist but not by no 10 inches.. i personally dont think i would look that great if it were the case

Hi Tyra,
My name is Dorothea Johnson and I am inspired by you more than ever. Your realness suprises me and I love you, Tyra you are the best. I am 15 and I am heavy set. You make me feel so confident with your words of encouragement. I would like to be a model someday, but I know I could never be as good as you. Dorothea Johnson, I love you Tyra!!!
Posted by: Dorothea | November 30, 2006 02:23 PM
Thats too bad that you have to be so tall to be a plus-size model.
I have been interested about that side of the model business, but unfortunetly i'm only 5'3".
I wish it was easier to grow tall then large lol.
thank you for representing all women in all shape and forme and show that yes we can be big and beautiful!

i just wanted to say that the show you did with the plus size models has in a way helped me deal with the fact that i am not the only overweight person around that feels the way i do and it has helped me find my inner beauty which for that i THANK YOU very much Tyra! yours truly LeAnne

Hey Tyra!! I watched your show about girls and their weight and I know how they feel, I want to be a model but nobody knows it. I am not OVER weight I am just not skinny and I feel like only skinny girls are models.

Tyra,
THANK YOU FOR THE PLUS SIZE SHOW!!
I LOVED IT!
IF I COULD GET MY TEETH FIXED, AND MY SCAR COVERED I WOULD BEG YOU TO LET ME ENTER NEXT TIME!
I HOPE YOU HAVE ANOTHER ONE!

Hello Tyra,
It was uplifting to watch your plus size model show. However, I disagree with the height and weight requirements. I am a 5'2" curvy plus size woman who would love to have the opportunity to model. It was discouraging to read that agencies don't look for people of my stature. I may not be a candidate for runway, but I always thought hope would be elsewhere. Maybe even on the TyraShow.
Posted by: Angel Rucker | November 30, 2006 07:36 AM
I think that you should do a show with Stacy London and Clinton Kelly from What Not To Wear. I think you three could help a LOT of people in this world who can't seem to find the right clothing for their bodies
Just a though :)

it sucks that you have to be so tall. I'm only 5'5". You should do a show on short models.
Posted by: Cindy | November 29, 2006 06:17 PM
I loved that you show us that all sizes are beautiful and anyone can be a model. It's a great message since our society is so fixed on one single perseption that skinny, big boobs etc...is what is beautiful. I just had an issue that kinda bothered me...if big is beauftiful, why does it seem that Tocarra is half the size she is when she was oN AMERICAS NEXT TOP MODEL? I think that somtimes they tell you it's okay and it's beautiful but then when ur in the industry to keep up you need to slim down.

Thank you for selecting plus-sized models. I went to high school with one of the ladies, Sunni. I have always admired her for her confidence and her presence. She holds her head up high and I can only hope and dream to be that confident in myself... one day perhaps I will. THANK YOU for choosing REAL women to depict on your show. I admire everything that you do, Ms. Banks. Please keep inspiring women. You are one of the best role models EVER!

Hello Tyra Girl,
I was so so happy you had another modeling contest dedicated to plus size women. I have always wanted to take part in a plus size modeling search for the big and beautiful but unfortuately I have never had the opportunity. Seeing shows like this one really makes me feel a lil bit better about myself because I am at time self conscious about my size. Keep the plus size shows coming.
Ms. Mary
Posted by: Mary | November 29, 2006 01:00 PM
I think it was great to see the plus size models on the show. I just can't help but to think that the competition was rigged. I mean, the winner was the smallest of all the girls and her body image is more commonly seen in plus size ads. I think the winner did a very nice job and probably deserved to win, but I just can't help feeling that the other girls were just up there as a front and that it wasn't a true competition. Again, I appreciated seeing women who have a body type more similar to my own, but at the same time, I think it was a set up.

Dear Tyra,
My name is Tenisha, I'm 20 yrs old and was on the verge of a serious meltdown until I watched your show on plus size models. Your show made me realize how important it is to be happy with who you are and where you came from. Because of my appearance I believed that I was not pretty enough for the world and that I was too fat.I use to look at myself in the mirror and say stupid things like " I'm so freaking ugly that's why I can't find me a good man". Because of my depression I droped out of college and now I have to find myself a fulltime job. My reason for this brief letter is let everyone know what foolish things that I as I young, voluptious, beautiful women have
done to myself. With my reality check I'm trying my best to return to college. To all the my big sisters out there I would suggest to be happy to be who are and where you came. Like a friend of mmine once said skinny is for punks, thick is in and skinny is so yesterday.
Yours truly,
Tenisha K
