Safety Savvy Advice from the Safety Chick

Safety Chick Kathleen Baty was the victim of a kidnap attempt at knifepoint by an obsessive stalker. After fifteen years of living like a hunted animal, she came to the realization that living weak and in fear was going to destroy her if she didn’t turn the negative into a positive. That meant becoming proactive. Kathleen offers these tips for being proactive about your safety:
• Listen to your intuitive body signals (accelerated heartbeat, butterflies in your stomach, hair standing up on the back of your neck.) People might say you’re just being paranoid, but pay attention to warnings your body sends you.
• What’s in your purse that can save your life? If you’re out alone at night, keep pepper spray handy. Practice using it at home first, so you know what to expect if it ever becomes necessary to use it in an attack. Keep in mind spraying your attacker in an enclosed area can result in you also spraying yourself.
• Don’t stop breathing! Sometimes under stressful conditions, a person forgets in breath, or breathes more rapidly. Any of these disruptions of breathing during physical combat can make you winded and sap your energy when you need it the most.
• Practice safety at home. Plant thorny bushes under windows and fences to deter intruders. Sensor lights are an essential addition to any home. They’re helpful when you come home at night, let you know if someone’s lurking on your property, and shock a potential perp. Also, while it’s fun to leave a clever message on your answering machine, the safe thing is to have a generic voice, preferably male, stating simply to please leave a message. Do not say you are not at home.
• Know the number for your local police station. Program it into your cell phone so you can get a speedier response in your time of need.
