'Design On a Dime' Decorating Tips
Kristan Cunningham, host of HGTV’s “Design on a Dime,” offers these tips to help you turn a boring room into something fabulous!
1. USE EXPENSIVE FABRIC SPARINGLY: Use a luxurious fabric, but in small quantities. This will give you a great stylish look, but still save money. Buy LESS yardage, and use it to cover only the fronts of pillows, or to band the sides or bottom of less expensive curtain panels. It’s heavy on impact but light on the dough.
2. PULL YOUR FURNITURE AWAY FROM THE WALLS: To make even the tiniest of spaces feel grander, simply reposition furniture in the center of the room. This will make existing furniture seemingly go farther, limiting the number of pieces you need to fill a space. Sometimes a new layout changes a room more than any piece of art or accessories could, and the bonus…it’s FREE style!
3. DON’T BUY A “SET” OF FURNITURE: Buying a matching set isn’t necessarily a deal and it also doesn’t reflect personal style. Take the time to seek out individual pieces that allow your style to evolve. If you do buy a set, think about moving the pieces into different rooms (example: keep the coffee table, but move the end table into the bedroom as a nightstand.) Take pride in presenting YOUR look instead of a catalog’s.
4. VISIT WEBSITES AND THRIFT SHOPS: Online classifieds are a great way to find major deals! Scour sites like www.craigslist.org for large furniture pieces, without the big price tag. Visit your local Goodwill or thrift shops to find second hand items that showcase your personality, but don’t blow your budget.
5. EVERY PENNY COUNTS: I have a secret $1.99 tip for windows. Visit your local craft store to purchase frosted contact paper. It goes up in strips and allows the sunlight to shine in, but maintains your privacy.

tyra waz up girl just let you know i love your show. and i loved what you did on that exstream home makeover for those people i love the one with the single mom of two that made me cry. i love how you made her home look so nice after seeing that iam fixing my place now and my colors are chocolate and white i made my living area that color and my husband loves the new look he said that i have up graded. and he said what made me change every thing around and i told him i watch the tyra show and saw how she made her place look amazing. so thanks tyra keep up the good work.

Hello Tyra,
First let me say you are a great inspiration for all women and keep up the good work. Your committment to impowering women is truly a blessing. And let me also say my thank yous to your mother for raising and structuring such a loving, caring human being as yourself. she is truly phenomenal. my comment is I have been living in my house for 2 yrs now. At first I thought it was the greatest (it is my 1st buy), now however I hate it. It's still an okay house but it's old with paneling on the walls, out dated cabinets and old flowery wall paper. It is in desperate need of an update or a bull doser. I always here about and try to adopt some do it your self tips, but my work never turns out like my vision. Not only that, but being a single mother and in the military, I don't usually have to much time to start let alone finish anything. Your probably thinking hire someone to come out and help- if so did you miss the part when i said i was in the military. :) n-e-ways, i am just tryong to find out if you know any one who can give me some realistic suggestions on how I can go about getting my vision to match my work and not hurt my budget. These are all GREAT tips. I am a pre-med major at the University of Alabama, where i live and work. I got lucky and got my own room AND bath room but the worst part is i have nothing on the walls and no decorations! HELP! i feel bad because the only splash of color is my bright green froggie bed spread and my poor beta fish, Pachy. since i work here on campus i have no time (because i go to class go to work come home study and do home work and try to sleep). Then theres the problem of only 5.85 and hour, i have no extra money to spend on cute stuff for my room if you could PLEASE help me! my neutral room is so not me!
