Find the Perfect Wedding Dress

Carley Roney, cofounder of popular wedding site www.theknot.com, offers this list of tips, tricks and things to know for getting the gown of your dreams.

Know Your Body: Determine early on the types of styles that are most flattering to your shape. While certain styles work best on certain body types, it helps to try on all different kinds of dresses and then decide what shape and style you look and feel best in.

Pre-shop Online: Before you begin booking appointments at the salons, go online and do a little research about the kind of style you looking for. At TheKnot.com, there is an amazing selection of over 20,000 gown images you can browse through and you can even search by designers, style and price range.

Determine Your Dress Budget: You should allocate approximately 8-10 percent of your total wedding budget for your dress purchase. To save money on the dress price, use a less expensive fabric (polysatin vs. double-faced silk satin), or choose a style with less embellishment. And remember, when calculating your dress budget, don't forget to factor in the cost of your veil and headpiece -- which can run from $50 to $500 -- as well as your shoes, lingerie, and jewelry. Also, keep in mind that almost all gowns need alterations, which will add to the bottom line.

Shop Early: We recommend that you start shopping for your dress at least 9 months before your wedding date. If you’re approaching your date and have around 3 months left to go, there will be some great styles available right off the rack. Be sure to leave yourself enough time for several fittings.

Don’t Bring An Entourage: Limit the amount of people that you bring to your fitting. One or two is best - any larger than that and you’re going to have too many varying opinions, making it much more difficult to chose the dress you really love.

Sleep On It: Even after you think you've found your gown, take a day to be absolutely sure it's the one for you. Since bridal gowns are custom-made, most salons put a no-return policy in their contracts; if you can get any money back, it probably won't be any more than 50 percent of the cost.
