“Beauty And The Geek”

The reality show “Beauty and the Geek” is the ultimate social experiment that pairs beautiful and socially savvy women with intellectually endowed but socially stunted men. The goal is to see what these polar opposites can learn from each other. But can beauties and geeks really coexist in a world that has traditionally pitted them against each other?

I do watch Beauty and the Geek regularly. I believe that they can be attracted. I remember in high school I sometimes went for a "geek" to give him a chance with a cutie. I remember the first date: I was not attracted to him, but I stuck it out. We ended up dating for almost 2 years. The thing is....beauties can be smart (though in my experience they fake dumbness for whatever reason) and geeks can look hot if you give them a little make over. It would be interesting to see a show with guy hotties and girl geeks.

I have been watching the show and I have to say that I am hooked and that the show does appear to educate and remind us all how "appearances can be deceiving". The one item that did not seem to get dispelled on the show was that blondes and brunettes (women) are usually opposites and tend to "click" with their own kind. Case in point, all the brunettes that were on the show were the first to be voted out and it was indicated in the show that the blondes were "shutting them out." I'd actually like to see a similar show that pits brunettes vs. blondes with geeks of all types: physically challenged, skinny, large, tall, short, etc.
What I discovered so far in the show are that most of the geeks are really attractive with a little attention. Most of them had just not paid any attention to their looks since it was not a top priority with them.

Hello.

I was glad I caught your show, because I was operating under a bad assumption with respect to Beauty and the Geek. Having seen a bunch of "dating" shows, I was under the impression that this show was started by someone who's main intention was to make geeks look bad.

I am quite a bit older than the people you had on the show (46). While not all geeks have the incentive to become a geek as I had, there are a number, who like myself have Asperger's Syndrome, or perhaps some other "learning disability" (dyslexia comes to mind). This difficulty with reading facial expressions and body language, makes it difficult to tell if other people are interested in you. The eye contact avoidance leads most people to suspect lying, even though pathological honesty is often a side effect of Asperger's (it is a trait I have).

Most of your geek guests seemed to be of the skinny (ectomorph) geek variety. Quite a few of the endomorph variety also exist. What seems to be quite rare are the mesomorph variety, which is where I fit in. Sure, I am a few pounds overfat (15-20?), but at approximately 250 pounds I am a big guy (5'9"). At 46, I bench around 300 pounds (still going up) and leg press 1100. Weightlifting is fairly recent (14 years, due to injury rehab), but I've been involved with soccer almost forever.

As I opened with, I was operating under a bad assumption with respect to the show. It seems that the show is actually trying to do some good, and the people should be commended. I do wish there was something I could do to change my own situation vis a vis dating or better yet, job search. But only having found out about Asperger's a few years ago, I think I have far too many coping strategies that are ingrained by now.

Dr Keith, The show that aired on Wed. the 7th was very good. I would like to extend the topic in a spin. What about us guys that are physicaly challenged, ie in a wheel chair and women do every thing to avoid us. They walk the other way when they see me heading towards them. It is not that I am bad looking just in a wheel chair caused from a spinal cord injury. My esteam has reached an all time low.
Help, Michael
