Internet Dangers

For most teens, logging onto the Internet is like taking a virtual trip to the mall. Social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook allow kids to interact without leaving their homes. From webcams to chat rooms,
cyberspace allows teens to express themselves even though risks can be lurking just around the corner. How do you protect your children from Internet predators?

I watched your show on internet dangers. My roomate at college is an avid internet dater. She will sit on her computer for hours upon hours on websites like myspace, truelove.com, etc. looking for love. She gives guys her personal phone number and will spend hours on the phone talking with them. After the guys realize they are not going to get what they want from her (becuse she's not that kind of person)they stop talking to her. She then just moves on to the next guy. Her heart has been broken many times by her internet 'lovers'. I just don't know how to get her to stop.

I watched the show for the first time Wednesday and saw the 19 year old who was arrested. Dr. Ablow did not ask questions that I would have asked. Like: Have you ever been exposed to pornography? How did this come about? How old were you when you first saw pornography? Have you seen internet porn? Did someone show you how to download this? This girl did make a poor choice to put herself and a 16 year old on the internet. She also made a poor choice to smoke pot before she did this. Pot is a mind altering drug. It was the first time she tried it. It is possible she did something she would have never done otherwise, had she not been under the influence of drugs. I see her and her friend as victims of exposure to pornography. There has to be more protection for children. It is far too easy to access pornography on the internet! I know 19 is considered an adult, but I think she is still very young and vulnerable. I think every case needs to be looked at individually. I think the punishment she received was tragic. I must admit I don't know what the solution is to limit the exposure to pornography to kids. Susan, RN

I have worked in victim services for many years. As an advocate, I must say that Dr. Keith was way off target by providing an attorney to help a women who posted nude photos on myspace of herself and an underage girl engaging in oral sex. No matter how you look at this, it was an abuse of power! Sex offenders want power and control. A 19 year-old manipulating a 16 year-old into posing in pornographic ways is an example of this and a crime. More damage was done when she posted the pictures on myspace. The child was violated. It doesn't matter if the underage girl agreed to it or that the offender had been smoking pot. The offender is just as responsible for her actions as a person who chooses to drink and drive. I have had numerous disclosures from teens over the years and they usually had gone willingly, but they still have no fault in the situation. That is why there are statutory sexual asssault laws. The adult carries all the blame and should be held accountable. This woman got off way too easily, as do most sex offenders. I wonder what the 16 year-old victim and her parents think about the legal fees being paid for the offender? Minimizing the abuse and offering sympathy to the offender invalidates the true victim's pain, whose healing should be the only focus. How about taking that money for legal fees and offering it to the victim and her family for the counseling they will need?

Has Dr. Ablow lost his mind? Of course that 19 year old girl should be punished for posting a pornographic picture of a 16 year old on myspace. Not only is she possibly committing sexual abuse in that she posted pics of herself committing a sexual act on or with a minor, but the 16 year old is not old enough to consent to those types of pics being posted on the internet. The 19 year old girl is responsible for her actions and should be punished. I can't help but wonder if Dr. Ablow would have been so forgiving if she were a male. And as far as his John Carr analogy, it's way off. The girl in question actually performed with and posted pics of a minor, not the same as possessing child pornography. And don't forget her five year sentence was deferred, she did no jail time(no matter how much that was deemphasized). Her only punishment is probation- seems totally appropriate.

I have been living in fear for about 2 yrs. now ever since homeland security kick in my door and ransacked my house, they wouldn't even let me put underware on. This was suposedly due to internet child porn. still on going due to be dropped. out thousand of dollars, belongings, and sanity.

You interview an attractive 19 year old young lady and say the state's law enforcement resources were misplaced by prosecuting her for posting oarl sex pictures of herself with a 16 year old friend. Would it be alright if she were a male? How about 20 years old? Maybe a male 21 years old.
She is a leagal adult who choose to have sex and post it on the internet with a child. I think she should be in jail, like any male would be if he did the same thing.

This topic should be taken one step further geared towards single/divorced adults new to internet dating sites. In my experience there are a lot of false profiles on internet dating sites which in turn reveal the true poster as coming from Africa. I've encountered this problem on PrimeSingles.com and LoveMeLoveMyPets.com . The poster does not fill in his profile completely thus misleading the receiver and many times end up asking for $$$ for whatever scam they are working on. I came close to being in trouble with the law because of this crap. Thought I was smart but boy did I get taken. There needs to be a show focused on alerting everyone to how these scammers write profiles on dating sites. The biggest red flag of all is email addys so readily given out and its primarly from YAHOO. Because of this aggravation I had to totally dump Yahoo messenger and my yahoo id and start over fresh with a new id and more stricter protocols.

me and my wife watched you show today about internet dangers, we both found this show intresting but we also know the other side of the story, if it hadnt been for the internet i never would have met my wife, and my life will never be the same im thankful for the internet, and thought that aside from all the negative stuff you hear- theres just as much good that comes from it

Dr Keith,

I watched your show on Internet dangers today. As a police officer I was angered by the way you minimized the crime that one of your guests committed (the child porn/ child performing oral sex). You made a comment about "The photo was only up for a couple hours and you got FIVE years?!"

Five years of PROBATION... As a law enforcement officer, I know probation is a joke. It is a waste of time and isn't a punishment. Your guest should have had to spend more than just a day in jail. Probation is no more than a slap on the hand.

Dr Keith, please refrain from minimizing crime and call it for what it is...

Thank you,

Tim
Police Officer in Colorado.

I am wondering why Dr. Keith is so appalled that April, a beautiful young woman, was treated equally under the law with other sex offenders. If April's name was "Arthur," and "Arthur" was an unattractive, yellow-toothed, ragged, foul-smelling male who had posted pictures of himself having sex with a sixteen-year-old girl, would Dr. Keith have jumped into action to defend his "little transgression"? I think not.

I can't help but wonder why it is that a 19 year old young woman, under the influence of drugs, takes a nude sexually suggestive (oral sex) picture of a 16 year old and post it in the internet and that is ok. You don't even know if it was that she was "performing" oral sex on the 16 yr old or if the 16 yr old was "performing" oral sex on her. It's basically dismissed as "Oh you shouldn't of been punished, oh no no no" That Dr Keith himself doesn't introduce her as the girl who took a sexually sugeestive nude picture of a 16 year old, but as the girl who took a nude pic of herself.
I wonder why it is that a cam girl thinks she's ok, that no one would find her if they so chose. When showing someone your cam, you're actually connecting to them. They can get your ip from that, and from the ip the server, from the server the street address.
I wonder why it is that Dawn the mother of the 13 yr old, doesn't get internet at home because she doesn't want her daughter put in danger so instead the daughter goes outside the household and uses the internet where there is no parental control. Get the internet at home and monitor.

Why is it we only hear the bad news about the internet?? You never hear the good news about people finding families, love, or jobs or other good things.
